Mianlian refers to the condition where sores appear between the eyebrows of infants, resembling scabies or tinea. One should investigate the etiology and administer appropriate medication. Since the eyebrows are governed by the Gallbladder Meridian (Gallbladder Channel), if the infant has a constitutional heat in the Liver and Gallbladder meridians, or if the wet nurse has heat in these meridians, Chaihu Zhizi San (Bupleurum and Gardenia Powder) is used. If the wet nurse consumes rich, greasy foods and strong alcohol, Jiawei Qingwei San (Modified Stomach-Clearing Powder) is prescribed. If the wet nurse suffers from emotional depression and anger, Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) is given. These formulas are taken by the wet nurse, and the infant drinks a small amount as well. Treatment should also be guided by the symptoms described previously.
An infant suffered from the aforementioned condition and was cured after both mother and child took Chaihu Qinggan San (Bupleurum and Liver-Clearing Powder). Later, due to the mother's failure to avoid rich and greasy foods, the condition recurred and spread over the entire body with oozing pus. Qingwei San (Stomach-Clearing Powder) was administered first, followed by Chaihu Zhizi San for the mother, while the infant received Qingjin San (Lung-Clearing Powder) and Niuhuang Jiedu Wan (Calculus Bovis Detoxification Pills), resulting in recovery.
Another infant, suffering from this condition due to a preference for rich and greasy foods, saw the lesions gradually spread to the limbs, most severely around the eyebrows, with copious oozing pus and alternating chills and fever (Huanre Wanglai). Internal treatment involved Qingwei San and Jiawei Xiao Chaihu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction), combined with external application of Lixiao San (Instant Efficacy Powder), leading to recovery. Subsequently, the condition recurred at the eyebrows, accompanied by eye twitching and turbid white urine, indicating an impending development of Gan Gan (Liver Accumulation Disease). The infant recovered after taking Siwei Fei'er Wan (Four-Ingredient Child-Nourishing Pills) and Jiawei Lushen Wan (Nine-Ingredient Aloe Vera Pills).
A third infant contracted this disease because the wet nurse failed to regulate her emotions (Seven Emotions: Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Sorrow, Fear, Fright) and diet. The condition spread over the whole body and persisted for a long time. The mother first took Qingwei San, then Jiawei Xiaoyao San; the infant took Niuhuang San (Calculus Bovis Powder), Jiedu Wan (Detoxification Pills), and Lixiao San, achieving recovery. Later, after the infant consumed rich foods, itching occurred at the eyebrows, which became sores upon scratching, alternating between itching and pain, along with eye twitching. Treatment with Siwei Fei'er Wan, assisted by Jiawei Qingwei San, resulted in recovery.
An infant presented with itching at the eyebrows that progressed to sores, spreading over the body, particularly severe on the flanks. He was treated with Siwei Fei'er Wan and Lixiao San externally, while the mother took Chaihu Zhizi San and Jiawei Xiaoyao San, leading to recovery.
Another infant took Huadu Dan (Toxin-Dissolving Pellets) for this condition but subsequently lost appetite and experienced cold hands and feet, indicating damage to the Stomach Qi by the medication. Wuwei Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Benefit-the-Work Powder) was prescribed for the mother, with the infant receiving only three to five drops occasionally. The mother then took Jiawei Xiaoyao San supplemented with Longdan Cao (Gentian Root) and Loulu (Rhaponticum Rhizome), and the infant's symptoms gradually improved.
In another case, the condition first spread to the flanks and then to the whole body, indicative of Liver Fire invading the Spleen (Wood overacting on Earth). Examination revealed the wet nurse also had Liver Fire. She initially took Jiawei Xiaoyao San with fried Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) for several doses, after which Huanglian was removed. After more than twenty additional doses, full recovery was achieved.
An infant suffered from this condition, which worsened significantly due to the wet nurse's anger. There was twitching of the eyebrow ridge, and it inadvertently spread over the body. When the wet nurse became very angry, the infant's face turned red, accompanied by palpitations, teeth grinding, and convulsions. This was caused by Wind-Heat in the Heart and Liver meridians. The infant recovered after taking Jiawei Xiao Chaihu Tang and Jiawei Xiaoyao San.
Qingjin San: Treats infantile scabies and mianlian, or generalized pruritus spreading over the body, or chronic oozing sores persisting for years.
