The nipple belongs to the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian, and the breast belongs to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. If the breast becomes swollen with red nodules, and after several days, swelling and pain occur followed by ulceration discharging thick pus, healing occurs once the pus is exhausted. This is due to heat-toxin in the Gallbladder and Stomach meridians, causing Qi and Blood stagnation, named Ru Yong (Acute Mastitis), which is easy to treat. If initially a small nodule forms internally without redness, swelling, or pain, accumulating over years until it enlarges like a rocky mountain, and upon ulceration resembles a ripe pomegranate, this condition is difficult to treat. Therapeutic methods: For symptoms of pain, swelling, and chills/fever, appropriate to release the exterior and scatter pathogens; for severe pain, appropriate to soothe the Liver and clear the Stomach; when pus forms but does not ulcerate, use the method to support the interior and promote expulsion; when flesh fails to regenerate and pus is thin and clear, appropriate to tonify the Spleen and Stomach; after pus discharge and ulceration with aversion to cold and fever, appropriate to tonify Blood and Qi; if appetite is poor or vomiting occurs, appropriate to tonify Stomach Qi. At the initial stage of Ru Yan (Breast Cancer), use Yiqi Yangrong Tang combined with Guipi Tang, which may sometimes resolve the condition internally; if agents that move Qi and break Blood are used, death will follow rapidly.
Gualou San (Trichosanthes Powder): Treats all kinds of carbuncles and sores, and also treats Ru Yong. A carbuncle arises from disharmonious Qi of the Six Fu Organs, where Yang stagnates in Yin.
Gualou (One fruit, smashed with skin) Sheng Gancao (Raw Licorice Root, 5 fen) Danggui (Angelica Sinensis, 3 qian) Ruxiang (Frankincense, 5 fen, stir-fried with Dengxincao/Lampwick) Jinyinhua (Honeysuckle Flower, 3 qian) Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica, 1 qian) Moyao (Myrrh, 5 fen, stir-fried with Dengxincao) Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel, 5 fen)
Decoct in water and take warm.
Huimai San (Return Pulse Powder): Take this when Ru Yong has not yet ulcerated, allowing toxins to exit via the large intestine; not suitable for deficient persons.
Dahuang (Rhubarb Root, 3.5 qian) Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica, 8 fen) Ruxiang (Frankincense, 5 fen) Muxiang (Aucklandia Root, 5 fen) Moyao (Myrrh, 5 fen) Chuanshanjia (Pangolin Scale, 5 fen, stir-fried with Gefen/Clam Shell Powder)
Grind into powder. Decoct Renshen (Ginseng Root, 2 qian) in water, mix with the powder, and take.
Another version uses Dahuang 3 qian and Renshen 3 qian.
Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten-Ingredient Great Tonifying Decoction)
Renshen (Ginseng Root) Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) Huangqi (Astragalus Root) Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root) (each 3 qian) Fuling (Poria, 8 fen) Gancao (Licorice Root, 5 fen) Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome, 8 fen) Jinyinhua (Honeysuckle Flower, 3 qian)
For diarrhea, add Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) and Rouguo (Nutmeg); for thirst, add Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) and Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit); for alternating chills and fever, use Matixiang (Costus Root) ground into powder. Generally, taking Coix Seed Porridge is beneficial for Ru Yong. Another prescription: Use Wuyao (Lindera Root, soft, white, and pungent variety) 5 qian, grind, add one bowl of water and one piece of Niupijiao (Ox Hide Glue), decoct together until reduced to 70%, and take warm. These two prescriptions can be generally used for intra-abdominal abscesses in pregnant women.
Another version uses Renshen and three other ingredients at 2 qian each.
There is also "Ru Chui" (Breast Blowing), caused by the infant's breath during nursing, leading to blocked milk flow, stagnation, and pain. If not treated promptly, it becomes an abscess. It is appropriate to quickly administer Gualou San and manually massage to dissipate the lump.
