This is epigastric pain (stomach region pain). Since the epigastrium is located below the heart, pain caused by overwork, exposure to wind-cold, and consumption of cold foods is colloquially referred to as "heart pain." Can the Heart truly hurt? When blood is insufficient, palpitations (Zhen Tong), fright palpitations (Jing Ji), and restlessness occur. If it is true Zhen Xin Tong (True Heart Pain), the hands and feet turn cyanotic/black, and death occurs within a day or two. Treatment should focus on dispersing cold qi in the stomach and eliminating cold food stagnation. Shenghua Tang (Decoction for Transforming Blood) must be used, assisted by herbs that dispel cold and digest food; there will be no case that cannot be healed. If the pain is continuous and dull, relieved by pressure, and there are no blood stasis masses upon inquiry, it should be treated as deficiency with added tonifying herbs. Postpartum heart pain and abdominal pain are similar symptoms: when cold pathogens, food stagnation, and rebellious Qi attack upward toward the Heart, it manifests as heart pain; when attacking downward toward the abdomen, it manifests as abdominal pain. Both are treated with Shenghua Tang (Decoction for Transforming Blood) added with warming and dispersing herbs such as Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) and Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit).
Modified Shenghua Tang (Jia Wei Sheng Hua Tang)
Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) (1 qian)
Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Radix) (3 qian)
Hei Jiang (Charred Zingiberis Officinalis Rhizome) (5 fen)
Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) (8 fen)
Wu Zhu Yu (Euodiae Fructus) (8 fen)
Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) (8 fen)
Zhi Cao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (5 fen)
If caused by cold-dietary injury, add Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) and Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit); if caused by damage from eating noodles/grains, add Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven) and Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus); if caused by damage from eating meat, add Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus) and Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus); if accompanied by constipation, add Rou Cong Rong (Cistanches Herba).
Rhyme Prescription:
Injury from overwork, wind-cold invasion, and consumption of cold foods leads to continuous epigastric pain.
Dispel cold, eliminate accumulation, resolve food stagnation; taking Modified Shenghua Tang brings peace.
For cold-food injuries, administer Wu Zhu Yu and Rou Gui; for noodle-grain injuries, increase Shen Qu and Mai Ya.
For meat injuries, use Shan Zha and Sha Ren; for constipation, add Rou Cong Rong.
First inquire whether there is a mass. For pain with a mass, take only Shenghua Tang (Decoction for Transforming Blood), mixed with Shixiao San (Pain-Relieving Powder) 2 qian, plus Yuan Hu (Corydalis Rhizome) 1 qian; without a mass, the pain is due to exposure to wind-cold, and Jia Jian Sheng Hua Tang (Altered Shenghua Decoction) is appropriate.

Remove these after the pain stops. Additions based on the ingested food are as described above.

Abdominal pain without a mass is due to wind-cold; Altered Shenghua Decoction is most effective.
