Women may experience leukorrhea that is red in color, resembling blood but not being blood, dripping continuously; this is referred to as "red leukorrhea" (Chidai). Red leukorrhea is also a dampness disease. Dampness is the qi manifestation of Earth and should present with yellow or white colors. The fact that it does not show yellow or white but appears red is due to fire-heat. Since the color of fire is red, the leukorrhea thus becomes red. However, the Dai Mai (Belt Vessel) connects between the waist and the umbilicus, an area close to extreme yin, where fire-heat should not normally exist. If fire-symptoms are now observed, could it be that the pathway connects to the Mingmen (Gate of Life), causing the fire of the Mingmen to emerge and scorch? In fact, the Dai Mai connects to the Kidney, and Kidney qi connects to the Liver. Women who suffer from worry and overthinking damage the Spleen, and those who add depression and anger damage the Liver. Consequently, stagnant fire within the Liver channel blazes internally, downwardly overcoming Spleen Earth. The Spleen Earth fails to transform and transport, leading to the accumulation of damp-heat qi between the Dai Mai. Meanwhile, because the Liver fails to store blood, blood also seeps into the Dai Mai. All these result from injury to Spleen qi, where transformation and transportation are powerless. Damp-heat qi sinks along with the descending qi, mixing with blood and descending together. Thus, the image of "resembling blood but not being blood" appears in its color. In reality, blood and dampness cannot be strictly separated. It is erroneous for people to attribute red leukorrhea to Heart fire. The treatment method must clear Liver fire and support Spleen qi; only then can recovery be expected.
The formula used is Qinggan Zhilin Tang (Clear the Liver and Stop Dripping Decoction).
Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 1 liang, stir-fried with vinegar)
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 1 liang, washed with wine)
Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 5 qian, stir-fried with wine)
Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, 3 qian, stir-fried with fine flour)
Fudanpi (Cortex Moutan, 3 qian)
Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri, 2 qian)
Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae, 2 qian)
Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi, 1 qian, stir-fried with wine)
Hongzao (Fructus Jujubae, 10 pieces)
Xiaoheidou (Glycine max var. nigra, 1 liang)
Decoct with water and take orally. After one dose, symptoms will slightly subside; after two doses, they will subside further; after four doses, complete recovery occurs; after ten doses, there will be no recurrence. This formula primarily focuses on nourishing Liver blood and completely avoids draining dampness. This is because in the pathology of red leukorrhea, fire-heat is heavy while dampness is light. The reason fire flares up is due to blood deficiency; nourishing blood is sufficient to restrain fire. Moreover, since water and blood combine to form the symptom of red leukorrhea, and one cannot distinguish whether dampness exists, the dampness has essentially transformed into blood. Therefore, treating the blood resolves the dampness as well; why bother with excessive measures to drain dampness? The brilliance of this formula lies in purely treating the blood, with only a small addition of herbs that clear fire, thus achieving unique efficacy. If one were to drain dampness, it would instead draw fire downward, making rapid recovery difficult. Someone might ask: "You previously mentioned assisting Spleen Earth qi, but now you only nourish Liver Wood blood. Why?" The answer is that using Baishao to calm the Liver allows Liver qi to relax. When Liver qi relaxes, it naturally ceases to overcome Spleen Earth. If Spleen Earth is not overcome, it thrives naturally. Thus, calming the Liver is precisely how one supports the Spleen. Why add herbs like Renshen (Radix Ginseng) and Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), which would complicate matters unnecessarily!
Marginal note: It is extremely clever not to use Renshen, Baizhu, and Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae). If this condition is mistaken for blood leakage (Xuelou) and left untreated for a long time, it may become Binglou (uterine bleeding). Using Renshen, Baizhu, Huangqin, etc., often yields poor results, and red leukorrhea may worsen. If a woman is over forty-nine years old, her menstrual cycle (Guishui) is about to cease, or she experiences frequent bleeding, this is Bing syndrome, and treatment should differ. There are many ancient formulas for the five types of leukorrhea, yet some work while others do not, generally because the root cause was not identified. This book reveals the etiology, so the treatments are invariably effective.
