The Kidney is the Water Zang-organ. The Heart is the Fire Zang-organ. Thus, the Heart and Kidney meridians are like enemies, seemingly unsuitable to be treated together as one. However, although the Heart and Kidney mutually restrain each other, they actually depend on each other. Without the Fire of the Heart, it becomes dead ash; without the Water of the Kidney, it becomes like ice and charcoal [incompatible]. The Heart must receive Qi from the Kidney for nourishment, and the Kidney must receive warmth from the Fire of the Heart. For instance, when a person is startled and uneasy, or experiences nocturnal emission during sleep, is this not due to the non-interaction between the Heart and Kidney? People consider being startled and uneasy as a disease of the Heart, but I regard it as a disease of the Kidney; people consider nocturnal emission as a disease of the Kidney, but I regard it as a disease of the Heart. This is not inversion, but indeed contains profound truth. The prescription is as follows:
Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (5 liang), Shan Yu Rou (Corni Fructus) (3 liang), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) (3 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (3 liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (5 liang), Qian Shi (Euryales Semen) (5 liang), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood) (3 liang),
Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) (1 liang), Chao Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen Preparatum) (3 liang), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix) (1 liang), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) (1 liang), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (3 liang), Bai Zi Ren (Platycladi Semen) (3 liang).
Made into honey pills, taken orally with warm water, 5 qian in the morning and evening.
The brilliance of this prescription lies in the fact that there are fewer herbs treating the Kidney than those treating the Heart. When the Monarch of the Heart is tranquil, the Qi of the Kidney naturally settles; once the Qi of the Kidney is settled, how can it cause movement of the Heart? Treating the Heart is precisely treating the Kidney, and treating the Kidney is precisely treating the Heart; this is what is meant by the mutual reliance of the Heart and Kidney.
Regarding blood discharge from the front and rear, hematochezia (blood in stool) comes from the posterior orifice, and hematuria (blood in urine) comes from the anterior orifice. These are difficult to regulate and treat, but essentially, they are all bleeding from the lower part. The prescription is as follows:
Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) (1 liang), Di Yu (Sanguisorbae Radix) (5 qian).
Decocted in water and taken orally; both conditions will be cured.
Although urination and defecation have their respective meridians, their source is the same, originating from heat in the Bladder. Both Sheng Di Huang and Di Yu can clear heat from the Bladder. Using them together in one formula represents integration within separation.
Lower back pain accompanied by headache involves different upper and lower parts. How should they be treated? Should one treat the waist or the head? Who would know that this is due to the obstruction of Kidney Qi? The Qi of the Kidney connects upward to the Brain, and the Qi of the Brain descends to the Kidney. Although the locations differ, the Qi is actually connected. The method should employ warming and tonifying herbs to greatly benefit the Yin within the Kidney, so that the Qi above and below will become unobstructed. The prescription is as follows:
Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (1 liang), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex) (5 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (5 qian), Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) (2 qian).
Decocted in water and taken orally; one dose brings recovery.
In the formula, Shu Di Huang and Du Zhong are herbs for the Kidney, and relieving lower back pain is their specific function. Why does the headache also heal now? It is because the headache is caused by the failure of Kidney Qi to ascend. By using Shu Di Huang to tonify the Kidney, the Kidney Qi becomes vigorous and ascends to the Brain; thus, the lower back no longer hurts, nor does the head. [Integration contains separation, and separation contains integration.]
