Spermatorrhea is a disease of the lower part. Forgetfulness is a disease of the upper part. Why can they be treated separately yet both yield appropriate results? The prescription is as follows:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (3 liang), Lian Xu (Nelumbinis Plumula) (2 liang), Qian Shi (Euryales Semen) (3 liang), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (5 liang), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) (4 liang), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (3 liang), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) (1 liang),
Sheng Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) (3 liang), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix) (1 liang), Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) (1 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (3 liang), Shan Yu Rou (Corni Fructus) (3 liang), Bai Zi Ren (Platycladi Semen) (1 liang).
Made into pills with honey, take 5 qian daily, washed down with plain water.
[This prescription is for treating forgetfulness; why is it also effective for spermatorrhea? Spermatorrhea is essentially due to deficiency of Kidney Water, but its root lies in the disturbance of the Heart Mind. By tonifying the Heart Monarch (the functional activity of the Heart), the Jade Gate (Jing Guan, the gate controlling semen emission) closes naturally without being forcibly shut, which is called "achieving two goals with one action." This method of differentiating within integration indeed has special merits.]
Diarrhea is a Cold syndrome. Acid regurgitation is a Heat syndrome. It seems that Cold and Heat are vastly different, so treatment methods should differ. However, acid regurgitation, although Heat, arises from Liver Qi stagnation; diarrhea, although Cold, arises from Liver Wood overacting on Spleen Earth. If one formula treats only Liver Wood stagnation, and another only tonifies Spleen Earth, then Spleen Earth will surely collapse greatly, and Liver Wood will surely wither greatly. It is better to treat both with one formula. The prescription is as follows:
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (1 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (5 qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (3 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (0.5 qian), Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen) (1 qian), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) (0.5 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
[The uniqueness of this prescription lies in the exquisite use of Bai Shao. Bai Shao is a herb entering the Liver Meridian, most capable of soothing Liver Wood stagnation. Once Liver Wood stagnation is relieved, it will not overact on the Stomach above, nor on the Spleen below. The prescription also contains Fu Ling and Che Qian Zi to separate and eliminate dampness and turbidity, so that all fluids exit via urination. How could there be excess fluid causing acid regurgitation or residual juices causing diarrhea? Moreover, Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and Shen Qu help resolve phlegm and digest food stagnation. This single formula achieves both integrated and differentiated treatment effects, a fact not fully known to the world.]
