This condition involves the pure discharge of clear water, which is not what is referred to as dysentery. Since there is no specific method to stop dysentery, how could there be no method to stop watery diarrhea? Therefore, when a person suffers from watery diarrhea, it is urgent to arrest it. The prescription is as follows:
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (five qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (three qian), Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen) (one qian), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) (one qian), Sheng Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) (one qian), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus) (five fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
[In this prescription, astringent herbs are fewer than tonifying herbs; it strengthens the Spleen and removes dampness, causing the pathogenic water to separate and dissipate. Thus, without intentional astringency, natural cessation occurs.]
To treat Spleen deficiency diarrhea, use the following prescription:
Shang Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix) (four qian), Jiao Bai Zhu (Fried Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (two qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (two qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Uralensis Radix et Rhizoma) (six fen), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (eight fen), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus) (five fen), Bai Bian Dou (Lablab Albus Seed) (two qian), Yi Ren (Coicis Semen) (three qian), Gu Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus) (three qian), Lian Zi Rou (Nelumbinis Semen) (seven pieces).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Another prescription:
For treating Spleen Deficiency Scattering Powder, use the following:
Jiao Bai Zhu (Fried Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (four liang), Fu Ling (Poria) (three liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Uralensis Radix et Rhizoma) (one liang), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (one liang), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus) (seven qian), Bai Bian Dou (Lablab Albus Seed) (three liang), Yi Ren (Coicis Semen) (four liang), Gu Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus) (three liang), Lian Zi Rou (Nelumbinis Semen) (four liang).
Grind all into fine powder. Take four qian every morning, swallowed with rice soup or boiling water. For each dose of one qian, add half a fen of Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) powder. If Ren Shen is not used, add four liang of Shang Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix) to the original formula.
This section distinguishes the color of blood in dysentery. Blood caused by Fire pathogen must be bright red, the pulse must be surging and slow, the mouth must be thirsty with a desire to drink cold water, and urination must be difficult, dark, and turbid.
Blood caused by internal injury is not bright but dark purple, or slightly red and pale white. The pulse must be thin and slow, or floating, choppy, and empty. There is no thirst in the mouth; even if thirsty, hot soup is preferred. Urination is neither dark nor difficult; even if dark, it is neither hot nor turbid. This is the key rule for differentiation.
[Bloody dysentery (Xue Li) results from the Liver meridian overcoming the Spleen Earth. Although it is due to dampness in the Spleen Earth, compounded by insidious invasion of summer-heat and internal injury from melons and fruits, the root cause is ultimately excessive Liver Wood lacking restraint, bullying the Spleen Earth. By nourishing the Liver to calm the Liver Wood, once the Liver Wood is nourished and ceases to overcome the Spleen Earth downward, the Spleen Earth also receives nourishment, and bloody dysentery will naturally heal.]
[Bloody dysentery presents with abdominal pain or without pain: pain indicates Fire; absence of pain indicates Cold.]
