A man from Kouzhen, in his twenties, had suffered from consumption cough (Lao Sou) for several years, with a voice that wanted to come out but failed. Dai Ren asked, "Have you taken any medicine?" The man replied, "My family is poor; I have never taken medicine." Dai Ren said, "Those who are young and strong and do not take medicine recklessly are easy to treat." First, he used a bitter emetic to induce vomiting, then administered Zhouche Wan (Boat and Cart Pill) and Xunchuan San (Xunchuan Powder) for severe purgation, followed by heavy doses of medication, resulting in a cure.
A farmer suffered from consumption cough. After one session of emesis and one session of purgation, his symptoms decreased by more than half. He then took Renshen Bufeitang (Ginseng Lung-Nourishing Decoction), and before bedtime, he took Binglang Wan (Betel Nut Pill) to stimulate appetite.
Another patient, Gao Sanlang from Dongmen, had been coughing for a year and a half and experiencing tinnitus for three months. He expectorated pus and blood, had many black spots on his face, felt hot all over his body, and could not produce sound from his throat. Dai Ren said, "The source of cough lies in the excess of Heart Fire. Injury by dampness in autumn leads to cough in winter. When Winter Water becomes vigorous, water and dampness connect and isolate the Heart Fire, preventing it from descending and causing it to flare upwards instead. Lung Metal is scorched by this fire, leading to cough. After prolonged scorching of Metal, the voice fails to emerge. Doctors who tonify the Lung and Kidney are mistaken." Dai Ren instructed him to first prepare watermelons, ice, and snow. Then, he employed methods of emesis and purgation, and prescribed damp-draining herbs. The illness gradually resolved.
A man surnamed Liu from Yang suffered from consumption cough with hemoptysis and sticky, foul-smelling sputum. Symptoms eased slightly in autumn and winter but worsened in spring and summer. He experienced alternating chills and fever, daily attacks in the late afternoon resembling malaria, and night sweats like water. He repeatedly used Mahuang Gen (Ephedrae Radix et Rhizoma) and Baipushan (Decayed Hemp Mat) to stop sweating, but the sweating continued as before. He also took Ningshen San (Ningshen Powder) and Ningfei San (Ningfei Powder) to stop coughing, but the cough persisted. Dai Ren first used Dusheng San (Dusheng Powder) to induce vomiting of phlegm, which resembled chicken yolk. Sweating occurred simultaneously with vomiting, and he remained unconscious and confused for three days. He was occasionally given cool water, after which his spirit slightly recovered and his diet improved. He was then administered Renshen Banxia Wan (Ginseng Pinellia Pill) and Guiling Ganlu San (Guiling Sweet Dew Powder), and he recovered within a few days.
Yue Balang, who usually indulged in alcohol, drank heavily once and became intoxicated. He had been bleeding from the mouth (hematemesis) for nearly a year. His body was yellow like an orange peel. He suffered episodes of confusion and unconsciousness lasting several days, unable to even swallow gruel or porridge. His body was rigid, resembling syncope (Jue). Both radial pulses were deep and fine. Dai Ren examined him and said, "Deep and fine pulses indicate disease in the interior, with accumulation inside." He administered over one hundred pills of Zhouche Wan (Boat and Cart Pill) and five to six qian of Xunchuan San (Xunchuan Powder), resulting in severe purgation more than ten times. The excrement resembled juice from okra leaves mixed with dry feces, emitting an exceptionally foul odor. Suddenly, he opened his eyes, reached out to grasp those around him, and asked, "Why did I reach this state?" Those around him replied, "You were unconscious for several days after bleeding from the mouth; you woke up only after Dai Ren treated you." From then on, he underwent purgation every five or six days, four or five times in total, until the bleeding stopped. However, he still coughed occasionally, once or twice, and tidal fever had not subsided. A decoction of Liangge San (Cool the Chest Powder) with added Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) and Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), each weighed two liang, was prepared with a large bowl of water, old bamboo leaves, and a little honey. It was boiled, strained, and sipped frequently. Occasionally, Renshen Baihutang (Ginseng White Tiger Decoction) was given. Within a month, he returned to health.
