Li Minfan had eyes that were frequently red. In the year of Wuzi, the Fire luck was in command, and Junhuo (Monarch Fire) governed the heavenly qi. People suffering from eye diseases in that year often went suddenly blind, due to the fierce blazing nature of the Fire luck. That year, Li Minfan's eye condition flared up severely, so he encountered Dairen (Zhang Congzheng), who used Guiti San (Melon Peduncle Powder) to induce vomiting, and the redness disappeared immediately. Within a few days, it flared up again. When the disease came on, it first started with redness at the inner canthus of the left eye, with the redness spreading and pulling the eyeball, resembling spread hemp, moving from left to right. Then the outer canthus became red, also spreading from left to right. The redness penetrated the pupil. After inducing vomiting again, it receded. This happened five times in total, involving five rounds of vomiting. He then had blood let from his hands, head, and nose; by draining from above, below, inside, and outside, he was finally able to defeat and retreat the pathogen. However, he dared not read books or look at the sun. Zhang said: One should wait for the coolness of autumn to attack again, and then the disease will be cured. Currently, the fire is flourishing and located in the skin layer; although attacking the interior is of no benefit. When autumn cools down, the heat will gradually enter the interior, and only then can it be captured. It is best to keep the eyes closed in the dark to nourish the Shen Shui (Spiritual Water, referring to ocular fluids). Darkness and stillness belong to Water, while brightness and movement belong to Fire, hence one should not look at the sun. Probably because after initial recovery, Li Minfan had gone out in the summer heat, causing the pain to recur continuously. After such vomiting and purging treatments, frequent attacks should not be employed. He should take Shunianzi (Arctii Fructus) to eliminate nebulae; the prescription is recorded in another collection.
The son of Fang Shanliang, the Wine Supervisor, was thirteen years old and had suffered from Shashi Lin (Sand-Stone Strangury) for nine years. Initially, due to residual toxins from sores and rashes not being expelled, he experienced hematochezia. Someone advised him to take Taibai San. After it subsided slightly, due to accumulated heat not yet retreating, it transformed into strangury with obstruction. Each time it attacked, he saw ghosts and spirits, and his wailing startled neighbors. At that time, Dairen was staying as a guest at Dengqiang Temple, and this illness was presented to him. Dairen said: All other physicians considered it a disease of the Kidney and Small Intestine, which is incorrect. The *Ling Shu* states: Diseases of the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian include enuresis and Bi Long (obstruction and dribbling). Bi refers to the inability to urinate, and Long refers to dribbling strangury. This is a disease of Yi Mu (Wood/Liver), not the Small Intestine or Kidney. Wood is suppressed, and Fire overacts upon it, thus heat accumulates in the Pao (Bladder). The Lower Jiao becomes constricted, forming sand and stones, much like a boiling pot simmered for a long time, turning into alkaline residue. Now, if you inflate an sheep or pig bladder until full, it usually cannot be pierced; how could there truly be sand and stones that allow leakage? From this, we know that the previous claim that taking Wu Shi Wan/San (Five Minerals Pills/Powder) caused this is likely not entirely accurate. The *Nei Jing* says: When Wood is depressed, unblock it. First use Guiti San to vent (via vomiting), then use Bazheng San, mixed with equal parts of Tangjian (Alkaline Residue), taken in one dose, and the sand and stones will naturally dissolve and pass.
Furthermore, a child of the Zhang family in Cuncun, aged fourteen, had been ill for about a year and a half. He contracted it during the wheat harvest season. Upon onset, he suffered severe pain in the Small Intestine region, holding his scrotum, jumping, spinning, and crying incessantly; urine would not pass for several days, and when it did, it consisted of sand and stones; stool was constipated and dry, with the anus prolapsing one or two inches. Various physicians could not cure him. Hearing that Dairen was resting from the heat at Zhuge Temple, he carried his son on his back and pleaded sorrowfully for treatment. Dairen said: Treat today, effect today. The time was already between Chen and Si hours. Use Tiaowei Chengqi Tang, only one liang, plus three qian of the head powder of Qianniu (Pharbitis Seed), drawn river water for decoction, let him swallow it in three to five doses; also take Kumo Wan (Bitter Pill), sixty pills the size of mustard seeds. By dusk, upper vomiting and lower purging occurred simultaneously, expelling pus and blood at once. After feeling settled from the vomiting and purging, let him drink a large cup of freshly drawn cold water, and urination became smooth one or two times. That night, drinking fresh water twenty to thirty times, the disease retreated by nine-tenths, crying only once. The next day, he slept heavily like a drunkard; from morning to evening, he suddenly got up, walked around seeking food, singing and laughing happily with his mother, instantly relieved of his suffering. Subsequently, regulate with Taibai San, Bazheng San, etc., and within one day he greatly improved. Fearing malnutrition during the hot summer, he stayed for five days before returning. Dairen said: This is a constraint of the Lower Jiao. Without vomiting or purging, how can the Lower Jiao open? Without allowing water intake, how can urination be facilitated? Generally speaking, if the source is clear, the flow is clear.
Additionally, the son of Liu Shisan from Baiting, aged six, suffered from Shashi Lin. Dairen used bitter agents to induce vomiting three times, and Yishen San (Kidney-Nourishing Powder) to purge three times, resulting in immediate recovery.
