While passing through Guobo, Dairen encountered a woman suffering from uncontrollable laughter for half a year. Other physicians had treated her without success. She sought treatment from Dairen. Dairen said, "This is easy to treat." He took two liang of block-form Cangyan (Halite), heated it in fire until red-hot, allowed it to cool, and ground it into fine powder; mixed it with one large bowl of river water, boiled it three to five times, let it cool to a warm temperature, and administered it in three doses; then used a hairpin to stimulate the pharynx to induce vomiting, expelling five sheng of hot phlegm; subsequently administered a large dose of Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Detoxification). Within a few days, her laughter subsided. The *Neijing* states: "When Shen (Spirit) is in excess, there is incessant laughter." The "Shen" referred to here is Heart Fire. Fire becomes flame when encountering wind, thus the image of laughter resembles flame. Among the Five Elements, only Fire corresponds to laughter.
The wife of Official Li in Suiping County suffered from a sensation of obstruction in the throat, inability to swallow food, and abdominal fullness. Other treatments were ineffective. Dairen palpated her pulse and said, "This is Phlegm Obstruction (Tan Ge)." The *Neijing* states: "The binding of the Three Yang meridians leads to obstruction." Wang Qixuan further explained: "Ge Yang refers to extreme Yang excess, causing food to be rejected and unable to enter." First, Tongjing San (Unblocking Meridines Powder) was used to induce vomiting of half the phlegm; then Zhouche Wan (Boat and Cart Pill) was used to purge downwards, repeated three times, allowing food to pass; finally, Gudi San (Melon Seed Powder) was used again to induce vomiting, restoring her appetite as before.
Dairen's female servant suddenly went blind upon arriving in Xihua. Dairen said, "This is due to Ministerial Fire." The Taiyang and Yangming meridians have abundant Qi and Blood. Therefore, he punctured the Cuanzhu (BL2) acupoint in the nose and the five acupoints on the vertex, releasing a large amount of blood, and her vision immediately recovered.
A child cried bitterly day and night without cessation, with wiry and tight pulses in both hands. Dairen said, "Heart Fire is excessive and overacts on Lung Metal. The Lung cannot endure this oppression, hence the crying. The Lung governs grief. Wang Taipu stated: 'When Heart Fire scorches, pain is severe.' Thus, severe scorching leads to severe grief. Now, bathe him in warm water to induce sweating by soaking the body. The Lung governs the skin and hair; sweating dissipates Lung heat. Once bathing stopped, the crying also ceased. Then, order the administration of Liange San (Cooling Diaphragm Powder) added with Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) and Jiegeng (Platycodon), decocted with Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), and Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas), to drain the pathogenic heat from the diaphragm.
A child of the Li family suffered from convulsions and spasms of the hands and feet, which Dairen examined. Dairen said, "This is caused by excessive Heart Fire. Do not forcibly restrain his hands; instead, follow the direction of the spasms." This condition resulted from the wet nurse holding and protecting the infant too tightly. Dairen ordered the floor to be swept clean and sprinkled with water; once dry, sprinkle again until extremely wet; place the infant prone on the ground, and after a long while, as the child turns and rolls, mud covers the whole body; then wash with water, and shortly thereafter, the condition resolved.
