Pediatric vomiting often occurs when a child is suddenly affected by "startling pathogenic factors" (Jing Xie, pathogenic factors causing fright) during feeding. The clinical manifestations include frequent vomiting of greenish saliva, fever, mental restlessness, and disturbed sleep. Ancient methods advocate first using Quanxie (Scorpio) and Guanyin San (Bodhisattva Powder) to pacify wind [Formula composition: Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Zhi Huangqi (Honey-processed Astragali Radix), Chao Bian Dou (Stir-baked Lablab Seed), Fuling (Poria), Lian Rou (Lotus Seed Cotyledon), Wei Muxiang (Baked Aucklandiae Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Quanxie (Scorpio, detoxified), Zhi Gancao (Honey-processed Glycyrrhizae Radix), ground into fine powder, taken with decoction of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus)]. Subsequently, Dingtu Wan (Vomiting-Stopping Pill) is used to stop vomiting [Formula composition: Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos, 21 grains), Xieshao (Scorpio tail, 49 pieces), Jiang Banxia (Ginger-processed Pinelliae Tuber, 3 pieces), ground into fine powder, mixed evenly, formed into pills with cooked Jujube flesh, size of Setaria italica seeds, each dose 7 pills, dissolved in warm water].
[Chen Shouzhen's Note:] For pediatric vomiting due to startling, ancient powders and pills are not suitable for administration. Instead, use Zhufuling (Poria processed with Cinnabar) 1.5 qian, Jiangzhu Ru (Bamboo Shavings stir-fried with Ginger Juice) 1 qian, Tianzhuhuang (Calami Humoris) 1 qian, Liaoqiao Ke (Forsythiae Fructum shell) 8 fen, Sheng Gancao Shao (Tip of raw Glycyrrhizae Radix) 5 fen. First decoct with silver vessels, then decoct the herbs in that liquid for administration.
When children drink excessive water, it stagnates in the chest and diaphragm, transforming into Phlegm-Fluids (Tan Yin). The phlegm follows rebellious Qi upward, resulting in vomiting. Symptoms include dizziness, cyanotic complexion, and vomiting of phlegm-fluids and saliva. Ancient methods advocate Xiangsha Erchen Tang (Aucklandia and Amomum Decoction modified from Two Old Ingredients Decoction) [Formula: Erchen Tang base plus Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Sharen (Amomi Fructus)]. For deficiency patterns, ancient formulas advocate Xiangsha Liujunzi Tang (Aucklandia and Amomum Six Gentlemen Decoction) [Formula: Liujunzi Tang base plus Huoxiang, Sharen].
[Chen Shouzhen's Note:] For pediatric vomiting due to Phlegm-Fluids, use Huazhou Juhong (Exocarpium Citri Grandis from Huazhou) 1 qian, Chao Fuling (Stir-baked Poria) 1.5 qian, Banxia Qu (Pinelliae Fermented Paste) 8 fen, Huoxiang Ye (Agastaches Folium) 5 fen, Chuanpuhua (Magnolia Flower) 1 flower, Zhi Gancao (Honey-processed Glycyrrhizae Radix) 3 fen, with Beiganjiang (Northern Dried Ginger) 1 thin slice as an adjuvant. For deficiency patterns, add Chao Dangshen (Stir-baked Codonopsis Radix) 8 fen, Chao Baizhu (Stir-baked Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 1 qian.
There are two types of pediatric vomiting caused by parasites: (A) Vomiting due to heat steaming in the Stomach Meridian; (B) Vomiting due to cold forcing in the Stomach Meridian. Both cause parasites to become restless and disturb the Stomach, leading to vomiting. Symptoms include lips being either red or white, intermittent epigastric pain, and frequent vomiting of clear saliva. Whether it is cold or heat should be differentiated based on Yin and Yang patterns. For heat patterns, ancient methods advocate Huachong Wan (Parasite-Expelling Pill) [Formula composition: Wuyi (Quisqualis Semen), Leshi (Artemisiae Argyi Fructus), Kulian Genpi (Meliae Cortex), Hufen (Lead White), Shijunzi Rou (Seed of Quisqualis Indica), Binglang (Arecae Semen), Kufan (Alumen), ground into fine powder, formed into pills with flour paste], administered according to the child's age and size. For cold patterns, ancient methods advocate Jiajian Lizhong Tang (Modified Replenishing the Middle Decoction) [Formula composition: Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Chao Baizhu (Stir-baked Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper), with Wumei (Mume Fructus) 1 piece as an adjuvant].
[Chen Shouzhen's Note:] For pediatric vomiting due to parasites, one must treat both the vomiting and the parasites. For heat patterns, use Dan Zhuru (Light Bamboo Shavings) 2 qian, Hua Binglang (Flower Arecae Semen) 8 fen, Shijunzi Rou (Seed of Quisqualis Indica) 1 qian, Wuyi (Quisqualis Semen) 3 fen, Leiwan (Omphalia Lapida) 3 fen, Zhi Gancao (Honey-processed Glycyrrhizae Radix) 5 fen. For cold patterns, omit Dan Zhuru, and add Chuanpu (Magnolia Bark) 5 fen, Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) 5 fen.
