When children contract cold damage (Shanghan) with the pathogen in the exterior, it is because cold evil (Han Xie) has injured the Ying (Nutritive) level of the exterior. The symptoms include fever, aversion to cold, absence of sweating, headache, and body aches, with a floating and tight pulse. Ancient methods primarily prescribe Jiuwei Qianghuo Tang (Nine-Ingredient Notopterygia Decoction). (Ingredients: Atractylodis Rhizoma [Cangzhu], Angelicae Dahuricae Radix [Baizhi], Chuanxiong Rhizoma [Chuanxiong], Asari Radix et Rhizoma [Xixin], Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix [Qianghuo], Saposhnikoviae Radix [Fangfeng], Rehmanniae Radix [Shengdihuang], Scutellariae Radix [Huangqin], Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma [Shenggancao], with Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens [Shengjiang] and Allii Fistulosi Bulbus [Congbai] as guides.) If there is constipation, add Rheum Palmatum [Dahuang].
If there is vomiting, retching, restlessness, thirst, and severe heat, ancient methods primarily prescribe Shuangjie Tongsheng Tang (Double-Resolving Universal Salvation Decoction). (Ingredients: Ephedrae Herba [Mahuang], Mirabilite [Puxiao], Rheum Palmatum [Dahuang], Angelicae Sinensis Radix [Danggui], Paeoniae Radix Rubra [Chishao], Chuanxiong Rhizoma [Chuanxiong], Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma [Chaobaizhu], Gypsum Fibrosum [Shigao], Talcum [Huashi], Platycodonis Radix [Jiegeng], Gardeniae Fructus [Zhizi], Forsythiae Fructus [Lianqiao], Scutellariae Radix [Huangqin], Menthae Haplocalycis Herba [Bohe], Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma [Shenggancao], Schizonepetae Spica [Jingjie], Saposhnikoviae Radix [Fangfeng], with Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens [Shengjiang] and Allii Fistulosi Bulbus [Congbai] as guides.)
After taking the previous medicines, if sweating or purging fails to resolve the condition and the pathogen transmits to other meridians, ancient methods primarily prescribe Chaige Jieji Tang (Bupleurum and Kudzu Decoction to Release the Muscles). (Ingredients: Bupleuri Radix [Chaihu], Puerariae Lobatae Radix [Gegen], Angelicae Dahuricae Radix [Baizhi], Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix [Qianghuo], Platycodonis Radix [Jiegeng], Gypsum Fibrosum [Shigao], Scutellariae Radix [Huangqin], Paeoniae Radix Rubra [Chishao], Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma [Shenggancao], with Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens [Shengjiang] and Jujubae Fructus [Hongzao] as guides.)
If there are concurrent interior syndromes, ancient methods primarily prescribe Da Chaihu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction). (Ingredients: Bupleuri Radix [Chaihu], Scutellariae Radix [Huangqin], Paeoniae Radix Rubra [Chishao], Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum cum Zingibere et Alumine [Jiangzhibanxia], Aurantii Fructus Immaturus [Zhishi], Rheum Palmatum [Dahuang], with Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens [Shengjiang] and Jujubae Fructus [Dazao] as guides.)
[Editor's Note]: Children's constitutions are generally unsuitable for the aforementioned strong medicines, lest misadministration cause complications. When cold is initially in the exterior and the evil has not deeply penetrated, simply use Perillae Folium [Zisuye] 5 fen, Mori Folium [Sangye] 1.5 qian, Platycodonis Radix [Jiegeng] 6 fen, Armeniacae Semen Amarum [Kuxingren] 2 qian, and Zingiberis Pericarpium [Shengjiangpi] 3 fen as guides; one dose can cure it. If the cold has transformed into heat, then one should use Dendrobii Caulis [Shihu], Paeoniae Radix Alba [Baishao], Scutellariae Radix [Huangqin], and Bambusa Textilis var. Multiplex [Dan Zhu] etc. to clear the heat. Regarding cases where neglect leads to prolonged retention of cold evil, which easily transforms into Jing disease (spasm), one must observe the changed symptoms and prescribe medicine accordingly, which is the steady approach.
When children contract cold in the exterior while the Spleen and Stomach concurrently have accumulated phlegm-dampness, simply use Mori Folium [Sangye] 1 qian, Armeniacae Semen Amarum [Kuxingren] 1.5 qian, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride [Huajuhong] 1 qian, and Massa Medicata Fermentata Chinensis [Banxiaqu] 5 fen, with Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens [Shengjiang] 1 slice as a guide.
When children's cold enters the Ying level while dampness is simultaneously entangled in the abdomen, simply use Mori Folium [Sangye] 1.5 qian (processed), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium [Chenpi] 1 qian, Amomi Fructus Rotundus [Baikouren] 6 fen, Poria [Fuling] 2 qian, Coicis Semen [Chaoyimi] 1.5 qian, and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma [Zhigancao] 5 fen, with Zingiberis Rhizoma [Ganjiang] 3 fen as a guide.
When children's cold evil has just entered, while their constitution inherently contains wind-dampness accumulation, simply use Eucommiae Cortex [Sangjisheng] 1 qian, Perillae Folium [Zisuye] 5 fen, Armeniacae Semen Amarum [Kuxingren] 2 qian, Poria [Fuling] 1.5 qian, Bombyx Batryticatus [Jiangcan], and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma [Gancao] 3 fen as a single dose.
When children present with false cold externally while internal accumulated heat is retained, simply use Prunellae Spica [Xiakucao] 1.5 qian, Mori Folium [Sangye] 1 qian, Scutellariae Radix [Dan Huangqin] 8 fen, Paeoniae Radix Alba [Baishao] 1 qian, Bambusa Textilis var. Multiplex [Xian Zhuru] 2 qian, and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma [Sheng Gancao] 4 fen, with Thyrsopteridis Medulla [Dengxin] as a guide.
