The syndrome of deficiency-type wheezing in children is characterized by a lack of qi, shortness of breath, and hoarse or obstructed voice. Ancient methods primarily advocate the use of Wang Jiegu's Huangqi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction, containing Ren Shen [Ginseng Root], Zhi Huang Qi [Prepared Astragalus Root], Zhi Gan Cao [Prepared Licorice Root], Di Gu Pi [Lycium Bark], Chao Sang Bai Pi [Stir-fried Mulberry Root Bark], etc.).
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] When children wheeze due to pure lung deficiency without complicating syndromes, the prescription uses Xi Yang Shen [American Ginseng Root] 1 qian, Mi Zhi Sang Bai Pi [Honey-fried Mulberry Root Bark] and Di Gu Pi [Lycium Bark] each 8 fen, Tian Xing Ren [Sweet Almond Seed] 1 qian, and Zhi Gan Cao [Prepared Licorice Root] 3 fen.
When wheezing is rapid and complicated by phlegm, ancient methods primarily advocate the use of Baihe Gujin Tang (Lily Bulb Decoction to Solidify the Metal, containing Bai He [Lily Bulb], Tian Men Dong [Asparagus Root], Mai Men Dong [Ophiopogon Tuber], Sheng Di Huang [Rehmannia Root], Shu Di Huang [Prepared Rehmannia Root], Dang Gui [Angelica Sinensis Root], Bai Shao [White Peony Root], Sheng Gan Cao [Raw Licorice Root], Bei Mu [Fritillaria Bulb], Xuan Shen [Scrophularia Root], Jie Geng [Platycodon Root], etc.).
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] When children wheeze due to lung deficiency complicated by phlegm, the treatment focuses on tonifying the lung and resolving phlegm. The prescription consists of Gua Lou Shuang [Trichosanthes Powder] 1.5 qian, Bai He [Lily Bulb] 1 qian, Chuan Bei Mu [Sichuan Fritillaria Bulb] 1 qian, Chao Mai Dong [Stir-fried Ophiopogon Tuber] 6 fen, Zhi Tian Dong [Processed Asparagus Root] 6 fen, Xi Yang Shen [American Ginseng Root] 1.5 qian, Chao Bai Shao [Stir-fried White Peony Root] 8 fen, and Sheng Gan Cao [Raw Licorice Root] 3 fen.
When wheezing is rapid and complicated by heat, ancient methods primarily advocate the use of Huangqi Tang from *Ben Shi Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Pieces of Gold, containing Wu Wei Zi [Schisandra Fruit], Bai Shao [White Peony Root], Tian Dong [Asparagus Root], Mai Dong [Ophiopogon Tuber], Ren Shen [Ginseng Root], Huang Qi [Astragalus Root], Shu Di Huang [Prepared Rehmannia Root], Zhi Gan Cao [Prepared Licorice Root], Bai Fu Ling [Poria], with W Mei [Mume Fruit], Sheng Jiang [Fresh Ginger], and Da Zao [Jujube] as guides).
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] For children whose wheezing results from lung deficiency complicated by heat, this formula is highly inappropriate. The prescription uses Xi Yang Shen [American Ginseng Root] 1 qian, Lian Xin Mai Dong [Ophiopogon Tuber with Heart] 1 qian, Run Xuan Shen [Moistened Scrophularia Root] 1 qian, Sheng Bai Shao [Raw White Peony Root] 6 fen, Bai Fu Ling [Poria] 1.5 qian, Dan Zhu Ye [Lophatherum Herb] 1 qian, Chuan Bei Mu [Sichuan Fritillaria Bulb] 8 fen, Zhi Sang Bai Pi [Prepared Mulberry Root Bark] 5 fen, and Sheng Gan Cao Shao [Tip of Raw Licorice Root] 5 fen, with Xian Gua Lou [Fresh Trichosanthes Fruit] 1.5 qian as a guide.
When children are affected by wind-cold, causing internal closure of lung qi, the qi rebels and fails to descend, leading to rapid breathing and wheezing, accompanied by fever and absence of sweating. Ancient methods primarily advocate the use of Huagai San (Formula see "Wind-Cold Cough").
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] Ma Huang [Ephedra Stem] disperses too vigorously; a child's constitution cannot withstand it. Only use Nen Su Ye [Tender Perilla Leaf] 8 fen, Bo He Jian [Peppermint Tip] 5 fen, Ku Xing Ren [Bitter Almond Seed] 1.5 qian, Xin Qian Hu [Validated Peucedani Root] 3 fen, Dong Sang Ye [Winter Mulberry Leaf] 1 qian, Cu Chao Qing Pi [Vinegar-stir-fried Citrus Peel] 3 fen, with Xian Pi Pa Ye [Fresh Loquat Leaf] one piece as a guide.
