This syndrome belongs to Fu-organ heat (heat in the hollow organs), often resulting from incomplete dispelling of wind and resolving of phlegm during the treatment of acute convulsion (Ji Jing Feng). Over time, this evolves into the present condition. Symptoms include fever, spontaneous sweating, redness of the face when lying supine, lockjaw with stiffness, incessant crying, or spitting out saliva. If accompanied by wind and heat, ancient methods primarily prescribe Longdan Tang (Gentian Decoction; see "Lockjaw" chapter). If it is liver meridian heat, ancient methods primarily prescribe Xieqing Wan (Drain Green Pill; see "Acute Convulsion" chapter). In cases of abundant phlegm and saliva, ancient methods primarily prescribe Sizhi Baolong Wan (Four-Processed Bao Dragon Pill; composed of Tianshu Huang [Inulae Flos], Chensha [Cinnabar], Dansheng [Arisaematis Cum Bile], Xionghuang [Realgar], and Shexiang [Musk] ground into powder; separately decocting Mahuang [Ephedrae Herba], Kuandonghua [Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus], and Gancao [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma], removing dregs, simmering slowly to form a paste, then mixing the powder with the paste to form pills).
[Chen Shouzhen's Note]: For Yang Epilepsy (Yang Xian), first administer Sanfen of Jufang Zhibao Dan (Official Formulation Treasure of Life Pill) dissolved in plain water and灌fed, which will awaken the patient immediately. Thereafter, use Zhizhening [Bile-treated Arisaema] 5 fen, Heizhipi [Black Gardenia Bark] 1 qian, Runxuanshen [Moistened Scrophulariae Radix] 1.5 qian, Shichangpu [Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma] 3 fen, Lianqiaoqiao [Forsythiae Fructus Shell] 2 qian, Zhuyexin [Bambusae Folium Heart] 30 strands, using Dengxin dyed with Zhusha [Cinnabar] as the guiding herb. Decoct these, and add 2 fen of Xijiaojian [Rhinocerotis Cornu Spica] juice ground fresh.
Children with excessive heat in the heart and liver may occasionally be touched by pathogenic shock (Jing Xie), causing their spirit and qi to become chaotic, thereby leading to epilepsy. During an attack, they protrude their tongues, cry urgently, their complexion alternates between red and white, they are terrified and uneasy, resembling someone being pursued. Ancient methods advise first administering Daqing Gao (Great Cyan Ointment; composed of Tianma [Gastrodiae Rhizoma], Baifuzi [Typhonii Rhizoma], Qingdai [Indigo Naturalis], Xiwei [Scorpio], Zhusha [Cinnabar], Tiansuhuang [Inulae Flos], Shexiang [Musk], and Wushaoshe Rou [Zaocys Flesh] ground finely, mixed with refined honey to form an ointment). Subsequently, administer Zhenjing Wan (Sedate Shock Pill; composed of Fushen [Poria with Hostwood], Maidong [Ophiopogonis Radix], Chensha [Cinnabar], Yuanzhi [Polygalae Radix], Shichangpu [Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma], Zaoren [Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen], Niuhuang [Calculus Bovis], Huanglian [Coptidis Rhizoma], Zhenzhu [Margarita], Dansheng [Arisaematis Cum Bile], Goutenggou [Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis], Tiansuhuang [Inulae Flos], Xijiao [Rhinocerotis Cornu], and Gancao [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma] ground finely, mixed with refined honey to form pills), taken with light ginger soup.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note]: Shock Epilepsy (Jing Xian) cannot be compared to ordinary sudden fright. It is likely due to pre-existing accumulated heat followed by a shock. The prescription uses Lingyangjiao [Saigae Tataricae Cornu] 3 fen, Zhufushen [Poria with Hostwood dyed with Cinnabar] 1.5 qian, Danzhuye [Lophatheri Herba] 2 qian, Chuanbeimu [Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus] 1 qian, Jinglianqiao [Forsythiae Fructus] 1.5 qian, Xuanshenxin [Scrophulariae Radix Heart] 1 qian, Xishengdi [Rehmanniae Radix Recens] 1.5 qian, Shengbaishao [Paeoniae Radix Alba] 1 qian, Gaancaoshao [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Tip] 3 fen, using decoction of gold and silver vessels instead of water.
