Children who generally have excessive phlegm, or occasionally develop epilepsy due to fright-heat, will experience an attack characterized by phlegm-saliva obstructing the throat, rapid breathing in the larynx, fainting, and foaming at the mouth. Ancient methods advocate first administering Yi Nian Jin (One Twist Gold) to urgently purge the phlegm (formula see under "Refusal of Milk"), followed by Zhu Yi Gun Tan Wan (Cinnabar-Coated Rolling Phlegm Pill) [composed of Qing Shi (Lapis Lazuli), Chen Xiang (Aquilaria Wood), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Da Huang (Rhubarb Root), ground into powder, water-pelleted, and coated with Cinnabar]. The dosage is adjusted according to the child's age, dissolved in plain boiled water for administration.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] The two ancient sequential formulas are both too potent; they should not be used lightly. My formula uses Laifu Zi (Radish Seed) 4.5g, Jiu Dan Xing (Aged Star Anise-derived Pinellia processed with Bear Bile) 1.5g, Hua Ju Hong (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride) 4.5g, Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillaria Cirrhosa Bulb) 6g, Xian Zhu Ru (Fresh Bamboo Shavings) 6g, Jing Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit) 4.5g, Ku Xing Ren (Bitter Apricot Seed) 6g, Tian Zhu Huang (Bambusa Textilis Internal Node Deposit) 6g, with a reference dose of Zhu Li Zhi (Bamboo Sap) 10 drops. After administration, when the Qi flows smoothly and phlegm clears, the epilepsy will naturally cease.
When children overeat milk and food, causing stagnation and accumulation in the Zhongwan (CV12) region, sudden excess of phlegm-heat may lead to epilepsy. Initially, the complexion is sallow with abdominal distension, accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea with sour, foul odors; later, it transforms into frequent convulsions. Ancient methods advocate using Miao Sheng Dan (Miraculous Sage Pill) [composed of Xiong Huang (Realgar), Xie Shao (Scorpion Tail Tip), Zhu Sha (Cinnabar), Dai Zhe Shi (Hematite), Ba Dou (Croton Seed), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), ground into fine powder, and formed into pills with steamed jujube flesh], administered by dissolving in Mugher Decoction (Mugwort and Costus Root infusion).
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] For epilepsy triggered by food injury, the primary focus is entirely on resolving food stagnation. The formula uses Xiao Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) 3g, Sheng Gu Ya (Raw Millet Sprout) and Shu Gu Ya (Cooked Millet Sprout) each 2.4g, Zhu Ru (Bamboo Shavings) stir-fried with Ginger Juice 4.5g, Shan Zha Pian (Hawthorn Slice) 6g, Bai Jie Zi (White Mustard Seed) 3g, Fan Zhi Qu (Fan Zhi Medicinal Leaven) 3g, Hei Zhi Pi (Black Gardenia Peel) 1.5g, Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice Root) 1.5g, with a reference dose of Xuan Ming Fen (Mirabilite) 4.5g, mixed into the medicine for ingestion. By clearing the stagnation, the epilepsy will naturally stabilize.
When children sweat and then remove clothing, causing the Couli (skin pores and interstices) to open, Wind Evil enters through the gaps. During an attack, the eyes appear bluish-green and the face red, and the hands move as if counting objects. Ancient methods advocate using Hua Feng Dan (Wind-Transforming Pill) [composed of Dan Xing (Pinellia processed with Bear Bile), Qiang Huo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Du Huo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Tian Ma (Gastrodia Rhizome), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepeta Spike), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), ground into powder, honey-pelleted], administered by dissolving in Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction).
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] When external Wind is contracted via the Couli, mild resolution is sufficient; there is no need to heavily employ Wind-dispersing herbs. The formula uses Nen Bo He (Young Mint Leaf) 1.5g, Sang Ye Luo (Mulberry Stem Fiber) 4.5g, Jiu Dan Xing (Aged Star Anise-derived Pinellia processed with Bear Bile) 1g, Xi Mu Tong (Akebia Caulis) 2.4g, Dan Zhu Ru (Light Bamboo Shavings) 4.5g, Chao Bai Shao (Stir-fried White Peony Root) 3g, Guang Ju Luo (Tangerine Peel Fiber) 4.5g, Si Gua Luo (Luffa Sponge Fiber) 6cm, Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) 1g.
If Wind is combined with Phlegm, add Zhen Xi Niu Huang (Authentic Water Buffalo Horn Calculus) 0.3g, taken by mixing into the medicine.
