For treatment of urinary retention without thirst, this is heat located in the blood level of the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner).
Cortex Phellodendri (Huangbai) (peeled, cut into pieces, washed with wine, and dried) 1 liang, Radix Anemarrhenae (Zhimu) (cut into pieces, washed with wine, and dried) 1 liang, Ramulus Cinnamomi (Rougui) 5 fen.

Stamping both feet helps facilitate the downward movement of the medicinal effect. Discontinue use if urination becomes normal.
If there is a stabbing pain in the genitalia like a knife cut, and foul discharge occurs, this indicates efficacy.
For treatment of thirst accompanied by difficult and scanty urination, this is pathogenic heat located in the Qi level of the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner).
Herba Centipedae (Dengxincao) 1 fen, Herba Tetrapanacis Trifoliati (Tongcao) 2 fen, Rhizoma Alismatis (Zexie), Herba Dianthi (Qumai), Lapis Succini (Hupo) (each 5 fen), Herba Siegesbeckiae (Bianxu), Caulis Akebiae (Mutong) (each 7 fen), Semen Plantaginis (Cheqianzi) (stir-fried 1 qian), Poria (Fuling) (peeled 2 qian), Polyporus (Zhu Ling) (peeled 3 qian).

The *Neijing* states: "Due to overeating, tendons and vessels become slack and disordered, leading to hemorrhoids in the Large Intestine." The Large Intestine belongs to Geng Metal, governs body fluids, has a dry nature, and possesses the clear,肃 (solemn/killing) qi of autumn, primarily governing contraction. Its function operates through fluids to support the flourishing of the Foot Yangming Stomach channel, which generates and transforms all things. The Foot Yangming Stomach belongs to the Earth of the Central Region; if Yang declines, it destroys all things. Thus, it is said that "all things are born from Earth and return to Earth." The Hand Yangming Large Intestine governs its transformation. Located in the West (Metal position), it can cause harm; it is the residence of killing functions. Due to overeating, sexual activity, or suppressing the Qi of the anterior orifices, these Qi return to the Large Intestine. Wood exploits Fire to insult Dry Metal, so Fire follows Dryness. Consequently, constipation occurs. In severe cases, bitter-cold herbs should be used to drain fire, and acrid-warm herbs to harmonize blood, moisten dryness, dispel wind, and relieve pain. This is the treatment principle. Use Qinjiao and Danggui Shao (tip of Angelica sinensis root) to harmonize blood and moisten dryness; Taoren to moisten blood; Zaojiaoren to dispel wind-dryness; Diyu to break blood stasis; Zhishi's bitter-cold to tonify Kidney and drain Stomach excess; Zexie's bland-penetrating to direct Qi to the anterior orifices and resolve damp-heat affecting dryness. Baizhu's acrid-sweet flavor uses acridity to supplement insufficient dry Qi and sweetness to drain fire and benefit Yuan Qi. Thus, sweet-cold draining of fire relies on the cold property of Zhishi. Ancient practitioners noted "the Lower Jiao is like a ditch" and "those below should be drained thoroughly," often dealing with severe constipation by pushing out waste with Dahuang. However, this further depletes fluids and blood, so Danggui is used to harmonize blood and oily-moistening agents are added to soften stools naturally. It is suitable to prepare as a decoction for urgent treatment of Lower Jiao heat. Diyu is sour-bitter and damages the Stomach, so it should be taken as pills on an empty stomach after residual food has digested.
