Question: Are dampness and sweat yin or yang? Answer: The southwest belongs to Kun Earth, which corresponds to the Spleen and Stomach in the human body. Human sweat is like rain in heaven and earth. When yin nourishes dampness, it becomes mist and dew; when heavy, it becomes rain. Yin-damp qi descends, which is the action of earthly qi. Excessive sweating leads to loss of yang qi; when yang departs, yin prevails. Severe cases result in Cold Middle syndrome; extreme yin-cold causes the voice to sound muffled as if from an urn. If dampness mixes with water, physiognomists say that the "earth tone" sounds like living in a deep urn, indicating obstruction and distance, thereby clarifying the nature of dampness. It is also known that both are yin-cold. The *Neijing* states: Qi deficiency leads to exterior cold. Although Heat Middle syndrome may present with steaming heat and sweating, it ultimately transmits to Great Cold. Knowing that it starts as Heat Middle syndrome, due to exterior deficiency and loss of yang, inability to withstand exterior cold, it ultimately transmits to Cold Middle syndrome, often becoming Bi syndrome and cold syndromes. Observing complexion reflects heavenly yin-yang, while observing pulse reflects earthly yin-yang; this is observing the yin-yang of the earth. Therefore, diagnosis via pulse and climate reveals both visible tangible and intangible manifestations.
