To treat spontaneous sweating caused by excessive dampness, as well as deficiency of Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) and exterior deficiency unable to resist wind-cold.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Mahuanggen (Ephedrae Radix et Rhizoma Cum Caulibus) (each 1 qian), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (7 fen), Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Danggui Shao (Radix Angelicae Sinensis Cauda), Sheng Huangqin (Raw Scutellariae Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma processed with ginger juice) (each 5 fen), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Sheng Dihuang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix) (each 3 fen), Zhuling (Polyporus), Sumu (Sappan Lignum), Honghua (Carthami Flos) (each 1 fen), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) (7 pieces).
Crush the above herbs into sizes resembling hemp seeds or beans. Generally prepare as one dose. Add two zhan (units of volume) of water, decoct until one zhan remains, strain, and take slightly warm.
In stroke syndromes, spontaneous sweating is inevitable; therefore, heavy diaphoresis is contraindicated. Hence, Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) is prohibited, and its root nodes are used instead.
To treat the period of June and July when dampness commands prevail. According to the principle that "the child can strengthen the mother," heat becomes vigorous. Damp-heat combines and inevitably overacts on Geng (Metal/Large Intestine), causing cold to arise in rescue. The Dry Metal (Lung/Large Intestine system) is attacked by damp-heat pathogens and exhausted. The source of Cold Water (Kidney/Water element) generation is cut off, leading to Kidney deficiency. Wei Jue (flaccidity and cold extremities) syndromes erupt severely: flaccidity and paralysis below the waist, inability to move, unsteady gait, and tilting of both feet. This formula governs these conditions.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (1.5 qian), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (each 5 fen), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Bai Fuling (Poria cum Risus), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (each 3 fen), Zhi Gancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Danggui Shen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis Body), Sheng Dihuang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix), Shenqu Mo (End of Massae Fermentatae Medicinalis), Zhuling (Polyporus) (each 2 fen), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Jiu Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex processed with wine), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Lanceae Rhizoma) (each 1 fen), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) (9 pieces).

Grind the above into a coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add two zhan of water, decoct until one zhan remains. Take before meals. Reduce the dose by half for children.
To treat the sensation of heaviness in the head like a mountain, which indicates dampness residing in the head.
Mahuanggen (Ephedrae Radix et Rhizoma Cum Caulibus) (stir-fried, 5 qian), Kudingxiang (Ilicis Latifoliae Folium) (5 fen), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (stir-fried), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructum) (stir-fried, each 3 fen), Hongdou (Adzuki Bean) (10 pieces).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Snuff it into the nose.
During the winter of Gui Mao year, when heavy snow fell, Supervisor Dong from Lingshou County came to Zhending for business. He suddenly felt a violent onset of wind qi. Pulse diagnosis revealed all six pulses were wiry (Xian); upon deep pressure, they were surging (Hong), solid (Shi), and forceful. Symptoms included spasmodic contraction of the hands, constipation with difficult passage, facial redness, and heat. This indicates the initial arrival of wind-cold attacking the body. The four limbs belong to the Spleen; injured by wind-cold pathogens, they twitch, contract, and become bi-obstructed. This is wind pathogen not yet deeply invading, while cold remains on the exterior. The Neijing states: "Cold causes tendon contraction," which refers precisely to this case. The patient habitually drinks alcohol, resulting in excess heat internally accumulating between the Stomach and Intestines, hence the constipation, difficult passage, facial redness, and heat. Internally, the Hand Yangming and Foot Yangming meridians are affected; externally, the Foot Taiyin Spleen meridian is affected by wind-cold pathogens. Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) [composed here of Guizhi and Gancao] is used to dispel cold pathogens and relieve spasms. Additionally, the bitter, cold, and slippery nature of Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) is used to purge excess and moisten dryness, urgently saving Kidney Water. Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) are used to raise Yang Qi and circulate the Hand and Foot Yangming meridians, preventing obstruction. Furthermore, the acrid and hot nature of Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) enters the Hand Yangming meridian as a guiding herb. Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) specifically tonify Spleen Qi, protecting it from wind-cold, thereby retreating Liver Wood evil and specifically benefiting Lung Metal. Renshen (Ginseng Radix) is added to tonify Yuan Qi (Original Qi) as an assistant. Danggui Shen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis Body) is added to relieve internal urgency, harmonize blood, and moisten dryness. This formula governs the condition.
Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (5 fen), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Danggui Shen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis Body), Zhi Gancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Jiu Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex processed with wine), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (each 2 qian).
Crush the above herbs into sizes resembling hemp seeds or beans. Generally prepare as one dose. Add two large zhan of water, decoct until one zhan remains. Take hot. Season is irrelevant; take in a warm room near fire, rubbing hands together.
