After various types of hemorrhage, or following chronic fatigue and prolonged dysentery leading to various deficiency syndromes, the recurrence of fever indicates a poor prognosis. For individuals who consume alcohol, fever is difficult to treat. Even for non-drinkers, if fever is induced by alcohol consumption, it is also difficult to treat. This is because alcohol possesses a hot nature and toxicity; when encountered by a body with originally abundant Yang Qi, alcohol causes the heat to become even more intense, leading to the dispersion of Yin Qi and the exhaustion of Yang Qi, thus making treatment difficult. However, if the depletion has not reached the point of Yang Qi collapse, treatment may still be possible.
For chronic illnesses accompanied by aversion to cold, methods to resolve stagnation should be employed. Severe aversion to cold in the back, combined with a floating, large, but forceless pulse, indicates Yang Deficiency (Yang Xu). Facial heat accompanied by aversion to cold indicates Cold Stagnation transforming into Heat (Han Yu Re). Generally, those with Yang Deficiency often experience aversion to cold and are suitable for treatment with Ren Shen (Ginseng) and similar herbs. In severe cases, a small amount of Fu Zi (Aconite Lateral Root) should be added to guide the action of Ren Shen.
