The Liver stores Blood. When its function is obstructed, the "General" (a metaphor for the Liver) loses its ability to plan and decide, causing disturbances in blood regulation. The *Classic* states: "Sudden anger injures Yin." This leads to various blood-deficiency syndromes, particularly in women. Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) and Fuling (Poria) are used to strengthen the Spleen, preventing Wood (Liver) from overacting on Earth (Spleen), which is known as "treating the disease before it arises." The *Classic* states: "When the Liver suffers from tension, sweet flavors should be eaten to relieve it," hence Gancao (Licorice Root) is used. The *Classic* states: "Disperse with pungent flavors," hence Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) is used. The *Classic* states: "Drain with sour flavors," hence Shaoyao (Peony Root) is used. Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) has a cool nature and disperses fire-anger. Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit) is bitter and suppresses the downward movement of fire. Danpi (Moutan Cortex) harmonizes blood and unblocks collaterals. Thus, it guides Qi within the blood without risk of stagnation, demonstrating the gentle yet comprehensive approach to pacifying the Liver and nourishing Blood.
