It nourishes and invigorates Blood while simultaneously yin-nourishing and qi-tonifying. It tonifies without causing stagnation and moves without causing leakage. Bitterness strengthens the Kidney, acridity opens the Kidney, and warmth moves stagnation. It is indeed a crucial herb assisting in the tonification of Qi and Blood.
Roudoukou (Nux Vomica Seed / Nutmeg - *Note: Context implies Myristica fragrans based on description, though classical texts sometimes conflate or specify distinct varieties. Standard translation uses Nutmeg for Roudoukou*). Endowed with the Qi of Fire, Earth, and Metal, it tastes acrid, is warm in nature, and non-toxic. It enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, and also the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. Acridity disperses and eliminates, warmth harmonizes the middle and unblocks circulation. Its fragrance first enters the Spleen, and its warmth opens the appetite. Thus, it is a key medicine for regulating the Spleen, opening the stomach, digesting food, and stopping diarrhea. If there is damp-heat accumulation, especially during the initial stage of dysentery (Zhi Xia) or acute hot diarrhea (Bao Zhu Xie Xie), it is contraindicated. It should be wrapped in flour, baked (wei), pounded, and the oil removed before use.
Roudoukou warms deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach, treats abdominal distension and pain due to retained food, slippery diarrhea, and cold dysentery, making it particularly important. The nature of Earth favors warmth and fragrance, so Roudoukou is most suitable for the Spleen and Stomach.
Main indications (referencing *Dou Zhen He Can*): It is a key medicine for treating smallpox complicated by Spleen cold, leading to diarrhea, vomiting, teeth chattering, and shivering. It warms the middle, opens the stomach, digests food, and directs Qi downward. The term "directing Qi downward" refers to the fact that when the Spleen is supplemented, it functions well in transportation and transformation, and Qi naturally descends. However, it should not be taken early in cases of initial diarrhea/dysentery or in patients with excess fire.
