Another version adds one pair of Hu Jing (Tiger's Eye) and one qian of She Xiang (Moschus).
In ancient times, a patient suffered from restless spirit. Every time he slept, his Hun flew away, feeling as if his body was in bed but his soul had left it. He experienced palpitations, frequent nightmares, and could not sleep all night. Doctors treated it as a Heart disease but were ineffective. One said: "Judging by the pulse, this is a pathogen in the Liver Meridian, not a Heart disease. The Liver Qi is deficient and attacked by pathogens. The Liver stores the Hun. Wandering Hun causes changes. In healthy people, the Liver is free of pathogens; when sleeping, the Hun returns to the Liver, the Spirit becomes calm, and sleep ensues. Now, because there are pathogens in the Liver, the Hun cannot return, so when sleeping, the Hun flies wildly, seeming to leave the body. The Liver governs anger, so slight anger exacerbates the condition." Prescribed these two formulas for one month, and the illness was completely cured. This formula uses Zhen Zhu Mu as the Sovereign herb, and Long Chi as an Assistant. Zhen Zhu Mu enters the Liver Meridian with the highest efficacy, and Long Chi is similar to the Liver. People generally consider Long Chi and Hu Jing as calming the Heart and anchoring the Spirit herbs, but they do not know that Long Chi calms the Hun, while Hu Jing stabilizes the Po, based on the principle of similarity. The Eastern Azure Dragon belongs to Wood, corresponds to the Liver, and stores the Hun; the Western White Tiger belongs to Metal, corresponds to the Lung, and stores the Po. The Dragon can change, so the Hun wanders and is unstable; the Tiger can remain still, so the Po stays and has control. For treating Po instability, Hu Jing should be used; for treating Hun flying away, Long Chi should be used. All things have their inherent principles, which are not lost, only waiting for human understanding.
