Sea beast. It obtains the Yang Qi of water, with a salty flavor and great heat nature, non-toxic. Its taste is similar to that of Otter Liver (Tatan Gan), but its heat property is double. It primarily treats Gui Qi (ghost qi/evil influences) and Xie Mei (malevolent spirits). For Gui Jiao (sexual intercourse with ghosts/dreams of sexual encounters with spirits), it works by specifically tonifying Yang Qi; when Shen Ming (spiritual consciousness) is invigorated, Yin evil naturally repels itself. It treats Su Xue Pi (accumulated blood masses) and Chui Lei (emaciation due to chronic illness); this is because saltiness can enter the blood to soften hardness, and warmth can promote circulation and dissipate accumulation. In sexual arts, it is often used because its salty and warm nature enters the Kidney to tonify deficiency, consolidate Essence and Qi, and strengthen the Yang pathway. Generally, it is soaked in wine overnight, wrapped in paper and roasted until fragrant, then chopped, or decocted in hot wine and mixed with other medicines.
Tan Ren Qi (Fossa's Umbilical Cord), with a great heat nature: if placed beside a sleeping dog, the dog will jump up wildly; if placed in freezing cold water, the water remains warm and does not freeze—this indicates authenticity. It treats Pi Lei (masses and emaciation), extreme exhaustion of the Spleen and Stomach, breaks up accumulated blood clots, alleviates cold and soreness in the waist and knees, repels ghost qi, prevents dreams of sexual intercourse with ghosts, drives away malevolent spirits, cures sleep paralysis (Meng Yan), removes accumulated cold, benefits Yuan Yang (primordial Yang), strengthens and sustains erection without decline, and effectively aids sexual arts.
The animal resembles a rat, belongs to Water, but its fur has bristles like needles, belonging to Metal. Thus, its flavor is bitter and neutral; neutrality implies a pungent quality. The Large Intestine belongs to Metal, so by similarity, it can treat Damp-Heat in the Large Intestine. Diseases caused by Blood Heat, as well as Wu Zhi (five types of hemorrhoids), Yin erosion, and persistent downward discharge, are treated. Swelling and pain in the genitals radiating to the lower back, abdominal pain, and hernia masses are all caused by Damp-Heat in the Lower Jiao and lingering pathogenic factors. Pungency disperses them, bitterness drains them, thus it serves as the primary treatment. The meat has a sweet and neutral flavor, capable of opening Stomach Qi, thus stopping reverse regurgitation (Fan Wei). It also treats Hemorrhoids and Chang Feng (intestinal wind/hemorrhoidal bleeding), both through the functions of removing dampness and harmonizing the Stomach. When eating its meat, bones should be removed. If mistakenly eaten, it causes emaciation and gradual shrinking of joints.
The fur, burned to ash and taken with hot wine, treats Wu Zhi with bleeding from the Large Intestine, regulates various hernias with pain radiating to the lower abdomen, treats Stomach rebellion while opening Stomach Qi, stops epistaxis (Bi Nue) and eliminates nasal hemorrhoids, stops abdominal distension and pain, and removes genital swelling and pain. Eating the meat promotes fat gain and regulates the Middle Jiao to improve appetite.
The chicken is a Yang bird, belongs to Wood, and externally corresponds to Wind, hence in the I Ching hexagrams it corresponds to Xun (Wind), so its nature is hot and agitates Wind. Although its colors vary (red, white, yellow, black), generally its nature is hot, tonifying Yang and raising Yin, possessing the meaning of Wind and Fire. Only the Black-Boned Chicken is distinct, uniquely obtaining the Essence and Qi of Water and Wood, thus treating Yin Deficiency Fever, Ru Lao (postpartum consumption), and Beng Zhong (uterine bleeding) etc. However, since Chicken nature is hot and agitates Wind, it should be avoided by those recovering from acute febrile diseases, those with unruptured carbuncles and ulcers, and those with chronic Wind diseases. The Black-Boned Chicken obtains the Essence and Qi of water; its flavor is sweet and neutral, non-toxic, and its nature belongs to Yin. It travels to the Blood aspect of the Liver and Kidney, nourishing Blood and benefiting Yin. Thus, deficiency consumptive weakness can be eliminated; when Yin returns and heat leaves, Body Fluids generate spontaneously, and thirst stops. When Yin is balanced and Yang is secure, the exterior and interior are firm, evil Qi cannot enter the Heart and Abdomen, harmony is restored, pain stops spontaneously, and ghosts cannot harm. Benefiting Yin makes the Chong, Ren, and Dai meridians vigorous, thus treating Beng Zhong (uterine bleeding) and Dai Xia (leukorrhea), and all deficiency-related diseases. The ancient formula Wu Gu Ji Wan (Black-Boned Chicken Pill) treats hundreds of women's diseases because of its function to tonify deficiency, benefit Yin, and enter the Blood aspect. For Gui Ji (ghost strike/sudden death), applying its hot blood to the chest brings life back, proving its ghost-killing efficacy. For Cock Comb Blood, use three-year-old roosters to obtain abundant Yang Qi. The Red Rooster is a Yang bird, and comb blood gathers all Yangs, thus treating Zhong E (acute poisoning/shock), Ke Wu (alien pathogenic invasion), and Wind invading blood vessels causing facial deviation; applying comb blood to the cheeks corrects the deviation, because saltiness travels to blood and penetrates muscles. Taking it with wine is best for inducing smallpox eruption, because the chicken belongs to Xun/Wind, and top blood is the clearest and highest. For Du Chuang (carbuncles on the neck), frequently applying hot cock comb blood disperses the toxin, using poison to attack poison, and leveraging the mobile nature of Wind. For Centipede venom causing tongue swelling and anus prolapse, soaking the tongue in male cock comb blood and swallowing dissolves it, utilizing the mutual aversion of substances to achieve control. Male Chicken Liver has a sweet and slightly bitter flavor, warm nature, and enters the Foot Shaoyin Meridian, treating Impotence. Thus, *Qian Jin Fang* uses three male chicken livers, one sheng of Dodder Seed (Tusi Zi), ground into powder, mixed with Sparrow Eggs to form pills the size of mung beans, taken 50-60 pills at a time with wine, three times daily, to strengthen Yang. It also enters the Foot Jueyin Meridian to treat pediatric Gan Ji (malnutrition with parasites) and unclear vision, utilizing the principle of guiding Qi into the Liver through similarity. For Liver Excess Heat, there is Ji Gan Wan (Chicken Liver Pill): one soft liver of a male chicken, steamed in white wine, remove sinews and membranes, pound into paste, add 2 qian of Picrorhiza Rhizome (Huhuanglian), 7 dried White Hibiscus Flowers (Bai Furong Hua) with hearts and stems removed, one Nutmeg (Roudoukou) baked in flour to remove oil, grind all into fine powder, mix with liver paste to form pills, divide into doses for 5-6 days, dissolve in plain water to take. For Liver Deficiency Heat, there is Ji Gan San (Chicken Liver Powder): a coin-spoonful of Realgar (Xionghuang), 5 qian of Mulberry Root Bark (Sangbaipi), one dried Chicken Gizzard Lining (Jineijin) roasted on tiles until yellow, grind all into powder, apply externally. Mix with a cup of white wine, steam in copper or earthenware vessel, remove medicine and eat. Chicken Dropping White refers to the white part of male chicken droppings, collected monthly; white chickens with black bones are better. This is called Ji Shi in *Su Wen*. Its nature is slightly cold, being an excretion of the intestines and stomach, thus it can travel back to the intestines and stomach to treat disease. The Classics state: "Fullness of heart and abdomen, unable to eat dinner after eating breakfast, is named Gu Zhang (tympanites)." Treat with one dose of Ji Shi Li (Chicken Dropping Wine), improvement is seen; two doses, cured. Li refers to drying chickens, frying until yellow, soaking in wine lees, filtering juice and drinking. Since Damp-Heat distension leads to difficult urination, Chicken Dropping promotes downward drainage, allowing Damp-Heat to exit via urine, curing Gu Zhang spontaneously. It also treats Stone Lin (lithuria) by promoting urination and stopping enuresis, for the same reason. Tendon twitching is due to Blood Heat; Shao Han chills and fever, and Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst) involve Heat in the Yangming channel; scars result from Blood Heat stagnation in muscles. Coldness generally removes all heat, thus it treats all these. Mixed with fried black beans and soaked in wine, it treats Zei Feng (thief wind/wind-bi), because Wind is a Yang pathogen born of heat; Chicken Dropping is cold and removes heat, and originally connects with Wind-Wood Qi, utilizing the principle of similarity.
Chicken Egg embodies the initial Qi of generation, resembling undifferentiated chaos. Egg White represents Heaven, its Qi is clear and nature slightly cold, thus treating red painful eyes, removing recurrent heat under the heart, stopping irritability, fullness, cough, and asthma, pediatric diarrhea, postpartum difficulty delivering placenta, and applying to carbuncles and smallpox swellings. Egg Yolk represents Earth, its Qi is turbid and nature slightly warm. The egg combines clear and turbid to form its body; its flavor is sweet and Qi cool, thus treating heat removal, burns, fetal sores, wind-heat, epilepsy/spasms, and Shao Yin throat pain in Shao Han. Use raw chicken eggs, soak thoroughly in child's urine, boil, eat one daily to prevent smallpox complications. Hatched eggshells, ground to powder, rub against pterygium (Zhang Yi); finely ground and applied to chancre (Xia Gan), utilizing the meaning of shedding/renewal. It also treats Shao Han recurrence due to overwork: roast until yellow-black, grind to powder, mix with hot water and take one he, sweating ensues and cure follows, because it possesses Xun/Wind nature and concentrates essence from long incubation, borrowing this to dispel recurrence from labor. Inner membrane of egg (White Skin) treats chronic cough; combined with Ephedra Herb (Mahuang) and Aster Root (Ziwan) and taken together, it stops immediately, utilizing its Xun/Wind nature of good movement and its light, floating, ascending body entering the Lung to break stagnant Qi. Yellow skin inside the gizzard, named Ji Nei Jin, has a bitter flavor and slightly cold nature; it is the site of digesting food and drink, its Qi is penetrating, affecting the Large Intestine and Bladder meridians. It treats diarrhea and dribbling urine/enuresis, removes heat and stops irritability. Because Heat in Large Intestine causes diarrhea, Heat in Bladder causes either involuntary leakage or heat-stagnation dribbling, the slightly cold Qi heals them. Irritability arises from heat; removing heat stops irritability. It is effective in treating diseases because it grinds grain essence and heat, sharing the same Qi affinity with the Liver.
Chicken nature agitates Wind, strictly contraindicated for tendon spasms; flavor assists Fire, beware of bone heat. Red Rooster tonifies deficiency, warms Middle, unblocks Spirit, strengthens pulses, stops bleeding, removes blood leakage, kills toxins, wards off misfortune. Droppings fried black and quenched in wine treat Bai Hu Feng (gout/rheumatism), stop pain and remove distension. White Rooster treats maniacal evil, directs Qi downward, stops wasting-thirst, harmonizes Middle, promotes urination, suppresses erysipelas. Black Rooster tonifies deficiency and consumption, wards off acute shock, stops heart/abdominal pain, treats fractures/carbuncles/swellings, kills ghosts, calms fetus, treats uterine bleeding/leukorrhea in women, and all deficiency diseases. Ji Nei Jin is cold and removes irritability/heat. Yellow Hen benefits Qi, strengthens Yang, treats Middle injury/wasting-thirst, calms Five Zang, stops diarrhea/dysentery, treats consumption/emaciation/enuresis, repairs severe injuries, strengthens Spleen. Boiled Chicken Egg calms Heart, stops fright, benefits Qi, opens throat voice, expels Wind, calms fetus. Yolk boiled with hair yields oil, applied to infant burns/scalds. Inner shell membrane named Feng Huang Tui (Phoenix Shedding) disperses chronic cough/stagnant Qi. Black Hen nourishes Blood, calms fetus, treats carbuncles/pus, governs Wind-Cold-Damp Bi, tonifies postpartum deficiency, egg supplements True Yin insufficiency, stops excessive postpartum bleeding. Chicken Nest Grass, placed densely under mats, stops infant night crying.
Main Indications (Integrating Smallpox/Rash): Rooster head and brain greatly induce smallpox eruption. For cases where eruption fails to rise, or head/face sink without suppuration, eating this is optimal. During the filling stage, regardless of rooster head, cooking and eating chicken meat is excellent. Cock Comb Blood, mixed with non-grain alcohol solution and taken, is most suitable for early smallpox eruption. Because Chicken is Yang Essence and belongs to Xun/Wind, top blood is the clearest and highest, using it yields miraculous effects.
