(Ruihe) Absorbs the vital energy of Earth, with a sweet taste, warm and slightly cold nature, non-toxic, entering the Foot Jueyin (Liver) Meridian. The Liver is the organ of Wind-Wood, opening into the eyes. When wind-heat attacks the Liver, it causes deficiency of Liver Blood, leading to eye diseases. This herb's warmth can disperse wind, its coldness can eliminate heat, and its sweetness can nourish blood; when Liver Qi harmonizes, eye ailments are cured. For use, soak in decoction, remove the skin, split the tip into two halves, and decoct together with Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), and Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla). After one *fu* (approx. 12 hours), remove and grind into a paste to add to the formula.
Ruihe specializes in ophthalmology, eliminating swellings on the upper and lower eyelids, treating wind-induced redness and marginal blepharitis, removing nebulae and polyps from the eyes, reducing fire and stopping tearing, nourishing Kidney Water to brighten vision, clearing red filaments on the cornea, and addressing redness, swelling, and ulceration. It also treats pathological qi accumulation in the chest and abdomen, as well as phlegm stagnation and epigastric fullness.
(Nvzhenzi) Possesses the supreme Yin energy of Heaven and Earth, hence its tree does not shed leaves in winter, also known as Dongqingzi. It has a bitter and sweet taste, cold nature, and neutral qi, non-toxic. Its qi is thin while its flavor is strong, representing Yin within Yin, possessing descending properties; it is an herb that cools blood and nourishes blood. It enters the Foot Shaoyin (Kidney) Meridian. The Kidney is the organ storing Essence, the root of the human body. If Kidney Essence is deficient, even if the Five Zang organs have no other pathology, the body will be unstable, giving rise to myriad diseases. The *Classic* states: "For insufficiency of Essence, tonify with substantial flavors." Since the Kidney is inherently cold and serves as the official of strength and vigor, deficiency leads to internal heat and flaccidity, often manifesting as excessive sexual desire. In such cases, bitter substances are urgently needed to consolidate the Kidney. This herb's qi and flavor are both Yin, eliminating heat and tonifying Essence. Bitter flavor enters the Kidney, perfectly aligning with its property to consolidate. Once Kidney Qi is solid, the Five Zang organs are at peace, hair and beard turn black, eyes become bright, myriad diseases depart, and the body becomes robust and healthy. However, individuals with a constitution of excess Yin, or those suffering from diarrhea due to Spleen-Stomach Cold, should avoid this herb.
Processed Nvzhenzi according to prescription turns gray hair black, brightens eyes, strengthens sinews, powerfully tonifies Middle Jiao Qi, calms the Five Zang organs, eliminates myriad diseases, and nourishes Spirit. Long-term consumption nourishes Blood and dispels wind; prolonged use promotes health and delays aging. Chongbaila (Beeswax) generates flesh, stops bleeding, alleviates pain, reconnects bones, repairs sinews, and tonifies deficiency. Decocted with Hehuanpi (Albiziae Cortex) and added to flesh-generating plasters, it yields miraculous effects.
The *Simple and Effective Prescriptions* treat various diseases arising from deficiency and exhaustion; long-term use turns white hair black again. To achieve rejuvenation, collect Nvzhenzi on the Shangsi day of the tenth lunar month, dry in shade. Soak in wine for one day before use, steam thoroughly, then dry in the sun. Take 1 jin 4 liang of Hanliancao (Ecliptae Herba), collected and dried in shade in the fifth lunar month, powdered; and Sangshenzhi (Mori Fructus), collected and dried in shade in the fourth lunar month, powdered. Form pills the size of mulberry seeds using refined honey. Take 70–80 pills per dose, washed down with light salt water. If Sangshenzhi is collected in April, crush it to extract juice and mix with the herbs; if Hanliancao is collected in July, crush it to extract juice and mix with the herbs. This reduces the amount of honey by half.
Note: Dongqingzi (Nvzhenzi) possesses the supreme Yin energy of Heaven and Earth, with a nature biased towards Yin-cold. If the Spleen and Stomach are deficient and cold, long-term consumption will inevitably lead to abdominal pain and diarrhea.
