My friend, Mr. Shen Zhonggui, is a learned and elegant scholar who has meticulously studied Qihuang (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and possesses keen insight. He further studied under Wang Xiangyan, a renowned physician in Wulin (Hangzhou), inheriting his complete transmission of medical skills, thereby deepening his own expertise. Mr. Wang was the foremost disciple of Ling Xiaowu, a late famous physician from our region (Zhejiang). Master Ling was indeed a Confucian physician. At that time, the volume of patients seeking diagnosis and the number of disciples joining his school were unrivaled. Moreover, he generously treated poor and sick people without ever slackening, which is why the elders in the village still praise him today. His skill in saving lives was profound, and his heart for aiding the world was dense; this could be sung as an ode to him. In his later years, Master Ling styled himself "Zhe Gong Lao Ren" (Old Man Who Has Broken His Arm [Metaphor for Experience]). He passed away at the age of seventy-two, which is regrettable. Very few of Master Ling's writings have been transmitted to the present day. Now, Mr. Shen generously takes upon himself the responsibility of praising former sages and enlightening future generations by sequentially publishing Master Ling's posthumous works. He also entrusted me with a copy of *Ling Lin Ling Fang* via mail, requesting a preface. Although I am not literary, hearing of this endeavor makes me clap my hands in joy. After reciting it, I sigh even more that Mr. Shen's lineage of teaching has a clear origin. This book selects few cases, but all are precise and hit the key points; like fragments of precious feathers, how can they be valued enough? I feel ashamed that my pen lacks the ability to bloom flowers, failing to praise Master Ling even one ten-thousandth part. I merely record a few words regarding Master Ling's biography and Mr. Shen's enthusiasm for publishing and spreading his works to inform the readers. The time is the 4637th year of the Yellow Emperor's Era, the 78th Jiazi cycle, early summer (the first ten days of the fourth lunar month). Fei Zeyao, a humble student, respectfully composed this while traveling in Shanxi.
Patient on the left: Wind-warmth pathogenic factors attack externally, causing Lung Qi to fail in diffusing. Additionally, food stagnation obstructs the flow of Fu organ Qi, generating phlegm and transforming into heat. Symptoms include body fever, headache, cough, vomiting and nausea, and disturbed sleep and appetite. The pulse is wiry, slippery, and rapid; the tongue coating is white in the center with a red tip. To prevent the onset of wind-rash, one should first diffuse Lung Qi.

Official Wu (November): The seasonal pathogen has not been diffused and discharged. This pathology arises from Wind-warmth binding the Lung. The pulse is slippery and rapid. Treatment should employ Acrid-Cool Diffusion and Resolution methods.
