Zhen Yuan Yin (True Origin Infusion) (by Zhang Jingyue): Yin Blood serves as the foundation for Yang Qi. When Blood is deficient, Qi has no foundation, occasionally leading to slight asthma. Women often have deficiency in the Sea of Blood and frequently present with this syndrome. The intent of Zhang Jingyue's formula lies in the characters "nourish" (Ji) and "soothe" (Huan). Nourish with Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Gui) and Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Di); soothe with Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata (Gancao), which is quite meaningful. Today, physicians add heavy sedatives like Pyritum (Zishiying) and Plumbum (Qieian), thereby losing the meaning of "soothing"; they add pungent-aromatic herbs like Aucklandiae Radix (Chenxiang) and Sinapis Albae Semen (Baijiezi), thereby losing the meaning of "nourishing." Moreover, this formula was not designed for the escape of Primordial Qi. Contemporary physicians often administer large doses of this formula whenever they encounter severe asthma. As Qi rises, Fire rises. Occasionally, moistening herbs may temporarily calm the Qi, but soon the yin-nourishing nature of the herbs mixes with the ingested water, filling the chest and diaphragm with pure Yin-Cold Qi, leading to the patient's death within moments. Physicians in Pan Shi, my hometown, advocated this method to delude people's minds; no one realized the truth, which is truly lamentable!
Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shudihuang) (5-7 qian or 1-2 liang), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dangguishen) (3-4 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata (Zhigancao) (1-3 qian).
With three to four cups of water, decoct until eight-tenths remain, and take orally.
Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang (Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Atractylodes Macrocephala and Licorice Decoction) (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treats shortness of breath. Yu Jiayan stated: This treats shortness of breath during exhalation.
Poria (Fuling) (4 qian), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi) (each 2 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata (Zhigancao) (1.5 qian).
With two cups of water, decoct until eight-tenths remain, and take orally.
Shen Qi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill) (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treats shortness of breath. Yu Jiayan stated: This treats shortness of breath during inhalation. It is the same as Ba Wei Di Huang Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia), but the original formula uses dried Shengdi Huang and Guizhi.
Fuling Gancao Dazao Tang (Poria, Licorice and Jujube Decoction) (by Zhang Zhongjing): Treats asthma accompanied by palpitations below the navel, indicating impending Ben Tun (Running Piglet) syndrome.
Poria (Fuling) (6 qian), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata (Zhigancao) (each 2 qian), Jujubae Fructus (Dazao) (4 pieces).
Use San Lan Shui (Ganlan Water / Agitated Water) (3.5 cups). First decoct Poria until two cups remain, then add the other herbs, decoct until seven-tenths remain, and take orally. Method for making Ganlan Water: Take flowing water from a long stream and agitate it several hundred times, or even a thousand times for better effect.
Zhen Wu Tang (True Warrior Decoction) (by Zhang Zhongjing): A divine agent to subdue rebellious Water and settle Phlegm-Asthma.
Poria (Fuling), Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Shengjiang) (sliced, each 3 liang), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) (2 liang), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi) (one piece, processed, peeled, broken into eight pieces).
The above five ingredients are boiled in eight sheng of water to obtain three sheng. Strain the dregs, warm, and take seven ge orally, three times a day. It is advisable to double the amount of Poria. If cough is severe, remove Zingiberis Rhizoma, add Zingiberis Rhizoma Siccum (Ganjiang) 1.5 qian, Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi) and Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin) each 1 qian.
Hei Xi Dan (Black Tin Pill): Treats Spleen and Kidney deficiency-cold, excess in the upper and deficiency in the lower, Ben Tun, five types of Water Qi disorders, and critical conditions of Wind-Stroke with Phlegm-Turbidity.
Yu Jiayan said: Whenever encountering urgent conditions such as counterflow of Yin-Fire, sudden collapse of True-Yang, asthma with phlegm-rattle, there is no other method besides this formula. I always carry it in a small pouch close to my body, fearing that urgent cases may arise before medicine can be fetched, and hoping that the warming nourishment of my own Yuan Qi will activate the efficacy of the medicine through my hand, its merits being clearly recordable. Even in adverse conditions of smallpox collapse, taking this formula can restore life.
Aucklandiae Radix (Chenxiang), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi) (processed), Psoraleae Fructus (Huluba), Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui) (each 1 qian), Foeniculi Fructus (Xiaohuixiang), Psoraleae Fructus (Buguzhi), Myristicae Semen (Roudoukou), Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Muxiang), Meliae Fructus (Jinlingzi) (pitted, each 1 liang), Sulphur (Huang), Plumbum (Qieian) (stir-fried with Sulphur until granular, each 3 liang).
Grind all into powder. Make pills the size of wutong seeds using wheat paste boiled in wine. Dry in the shade. Rub with a cloth bag until smooth and glossy. Take 40-50 pills each time, washed down with Ginger Decoction.
