The pulse of malaria naturally presents as a string-like (Xian) pulse. If the pulse is floating and string-like, it indicates pathogenic factors in the exterior; if sinking and string-like, it indicates pathogenic factors in the interior; if surging and string-like, it belongs to heat syndrome; if slow and string-like, it belongs to cold syndrome; if slippery and string-like, it is due to food retention. For chronic malaria, if the pulse appears minute (Wei), fine (Xi), empty (Xu), or weak (Ruo), and gradually becomes moderate, recovery will ensue; if the pulse is string-like and tight, the condition is critical; if Earth failure (Spleen-Stomach Qi exhaustion) leads to a double string-like pulse, or if a choppy (Dai) or scattered (San) pulse appears, the condition is incurable.
