The transmission of the medical arts has existed since ancient times. Sages and wise ministers of successive dynasties have paid close attention to it, and benevolent people and filial sons since antiquity have all known to value it. Humans live between Heaven and Earth, and their bodies are composed of the "Four Elements" (Earth, Water, Fire, Wind). Invasion and steaming by external pathogens such as Wind, Cold, Summer-heat, and Dampness; stagnation and knotting caused by emotional fluctuations such as Joy, Anger, Worry, and Thought; whether experiencing suffering or joy, prosperity or decline—all damage the Spirit (Shen); whether experiencing hunger or fullness, idleness or labor—all injure Qi and Blood. This is inevitable in life, and applies to every individual; however, due to differences in innate constitution (Xu and Shi), one must possess perseverance to achieve healing. (It is not only doctors who need perseverance; patients must also maintain constancy in taking medicine, daily routine, and diet to restore health.)
Herbs vary in their beneficial and toxic properties; do not taste them if you do not understand their nature. There are no ineffective medicines, provided they are used with extreme efficacy. For example, chewing Sour Plum (Wumei) immediately causes tooth sourness and saliva overflow; blowing Soap Bean (Zaojiao) powder into the nose immediately induces sneezing and clears the airway. Eating spicy Mustard seeds causes tears to flow, while biting Sichuan Pepper (Huajiao) obstructs Qi flow. Yin Jiao (Mineral scale from steamers) can locate internal Jaundice (Danzhuang); blowing Nux Vomica/Stone Powder (Xiaoshi) into the nose saves severe headache approaching death. Cracked skin and turbid urine with many bubbles are treated at night with Decoction of Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome (Bixie); a cold body and distended abdomen rely entirely on Cormorant oil (Luchi); Turtle urine resolves Trismus (Jin), and Rat bone promotes tooth growth; Magnetite (Cishi) guides needles, and Amber (Hupo) attracts mustard seeds; Luan Glue reconnects broken swords, and Marten Gall separates cups; Blood thrown into Lotus Root juice does not coagulate, and Lacquer dissolves upon contact with Crab; Scallion juice can be used to decoct Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) into a water-like form, and Toad Venom paste (Changao) can soften jade like mud. These few examples demonstrate various extraordinary efficacies. When using single herbs alone, the Qi is pure and healing is rapid; when combining multiple herbs, flavors are mixed and effects are slower. Only through proper coordination of Mutual Enhancement (Xiangxu) and Assistant/Envoy (Zuoshi) combinations can efforts be concentrated to achieve success; if Contrary (Xiangfan), Incompatible (Xiangwei), or Hostile (Xiange) herbs are mixed, they will contend like enemies and disseminate toxicity. The severity or improvement of disease concerns our well-being; the merit or demerit of a formula determines life and death. Formulas must be precise, detailed, and evidence-based; how can they be baseless like cracks formed by fire? Seeking herbs for specific symptoms requires gathering the best qualities; applying medications according to appropriateness yields perfect results.
