Damp-heat steams the human body, and in the long summer days, those with Qi deficiency and weak constitutions are easily injured by heat. Symptoms include shortness of breath in the chest, fatigue in the four limbs, irritability, poor appetite, and a condition worse than usual. There is a preference for lying down, dry mouth, or diarrhea; the method of clearing summerheat and benefiting Qi has no contraindications. If night sweats occur intermittently, floating wheat (Fumai) can be added to the decoction. For dark red urine, Gardenia (Zhizi) and Talcum (Huashi) are suitable; for thirst, Chinese Plum (Wumei) and Trichosanthes Root (Tianhuafen) should be taken. For headache, Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong) and Gypsum (Shigao) are used; for cough, add Almond (Xingren) and Gypsum (Shigao), removing Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang) and Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu). For chest discomfort, Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang) and Amomi Fructus (Sharen) are used; for diarrhea, Poria (Fuling) and Myristica Seed (Roukou) help improve it.
The southeast region is low-lying and perpetually damp; residents contracting dampness present with various diseases. Some contract it wading through water or being steamed by rain and dew; others get it from excessive consumption of cold drinks. Urine is scanty and dark red, the body feels heavy, bones and muscles ache and numb, and movement is slow. Gradually, edema and jaundice appear; Zao Tu Shen Shi Tang (Dry Earth Damp-Draining Decoction) is indicated. The formula contains Poria (Fuling), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Pinelliae Tuber (Ban), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie), Polyporus (Zhuling), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), and Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu). Use Amomi Fructus (Sharen), Jujubae Fructus (Zao), and Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang) as guides; before taking, half a spoonful of salt (roasted and washed) can be added. For external dampness causing chills, fever, swelling, and pain, Qianghuo, Fangfeng, and Tongcao have strong efficacy and are suitable. For internal dampness causing chest fullness and vomiting, for wheezing and abdominal distension, Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi) is used. Coptidis Rhizoma (Chuanlian), Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha), and fried Raphani Fructus (Laifuzi); for urinary retention, Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi) and Akebiae Caulis (Mutong) are beneficial. For damp-heat jaundice, Yinchen relies on Artemisiae Scopariae Herba (Yinchen), combined with Gardenia (Zhizi), Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi), and Talcum (Huashi). Danxi said that dampness is consolidated by dryness; Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu) is the priority and cannot be discarded. Dampness dispersed by wind requires Qianghuo alone; if dampness persists and generates heat, Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) and Gardenia (Zhizi) should be taken. Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang) can be used but not in large amounts, as excessive sweating may lead to unpredictable changes.
Mr. Chen said: When dampness obstructs the Upper Jiao, one should open Lung Qi, assisted by bland-draining herbs to unblock the Bladder, following the principle of "opening the upper sluice and branching rivers" to guide water flow downward. The *Neijing* states: The orifice of the Spleen is the tongue; when pathogens stagnate in the orifice, sensitivity is lost, leading to slurred speech. The treatment method should involve separating and draining dampness, assisted by acrid-aromatic herbs to silently transform Taiyin Spleen Yang. This is the treatment method for Taiyin interior syndromes. Zhang Zhongjing said: Patients with dampness strictly avoid diaphoresis; inducing sweat will lead to tetany and syncope. Remember this well.
When Spleen Yang fails to transport and dampness stagnates in the Middle Jiao, use Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu/Baizhu), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), and Pinelliae Tuber (Ban) to warm and unblock it; use Poria (Fuling), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie), Benincasae Exocarpium (Fupi), and Talcum (Huashi) to drain it blandly (Mr. Chen also annotated).
