The symptoms resemble Baihu Tang syndrome, but the pulse is not large and excess.")

You Shi's (*You Yujing*) *Jinkui Yi* includes Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) (5 qian) and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian). (Note: This formula from You Shi's *Jinkui Yi* is not recorded in other books. Xu Bingnan was highly renowned at the time; it is unlikely he would have edited and published this book without integrity.)
Zuo Gui Yin (Left Restoring Decoction): Treats severe deficiency of Kidney Water (Yin). It can treat conditions that Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) cannot treat. Its efficacy lies in the great sweetness of Gan Cao (Licorice), which transports essence from the Spleen to the Kidneys.

Add five Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus), decoct in water, and take orally.
Qing Zhen Tang (Clearing Shock Decoction) (from *Baoming Ji*): Treats Lei Tou Feng (Thunderhead Wind), characterized by nodules on the head and face, aversion to cold, stiffness/spasm, fever, resembling Taiyang disease (nodules should be pricked to bleed).
Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (2 qian), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (4 qian), He Ye (Nelumbinis Folium) (one whole leaf).
Decoct in water, take after meals.
Tou Ding San (Penetrating the Crown Powder) (from *Beishi Fang*): Treats both lateral and central headaches (Tou Feng), effective for both old and new cases, and also treats nasal congestion with loss of smell.

Grind into powder, place in a small-mouthed jar, seal tightly. Let the patient hold clear water in their mouth. Sniff a bean-sized amount of powder into the nostril corresponding to the side of the pain. After a while, salivation occurs, bringing relief. If not cured, repeat after three days.
(Sun Xin Dian, grandson of Sun Simiao) Note: This originates from the method in *Jinkui Yaolue* of inserting medicine into the nose to extract yellow phlegm. Wine drinkers often have dampness and heavy heads, making this suitable for them.
Another method for treating lateral and central headaches: crush fresh Radish (Raphani Fructus) to extract juice. Have the patient lie supine and instill the juice into the nose. For left-sided pain, instill into the right nostril; for right-sided pain, into the left. If both sides hurt, instill into both.
Furthermore, although Tou Feng differs between lateral and central types, the pathology involves the Shaoyang and Yangming collaterals. Pricking several acupoints at the painful area with fine needles yields immediate results.
Zhang Shiwen stated: External steaming methods are more effective than application methods. The formula uses Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 0.5 liang, Late Silkworm Sand (Bombyx Batryticatus) 2 liang, and Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus) equal to the patient's age in number. Decoct in five bowls of water until reduced to three bowls. Place the decoction in a stir-fry pan covered with thick paper having a coin-sized hole in the center. Steam the vapor onto the painful area once daily. Even for chronic cases lasting years, three to five treatments will prevent recurrence permanently. Placing fresh Papaya (Chaenomelis Fructus) by the pillow during daily life allows its aroma to penetrate and disperse Liver Wind, which is also an excellent method.
