Lin syndrome refers to frequent urination, difficulty in smooth flow, and pain after urination. Generally, it is caused by damp-heat in the Bladder meridian. However, there are six types of Lin:
First is Shilin (Stone Lin), where urine passes like sand or gravel, resembling the white alkali crust forming at the bottom of a pot left on fire for a long time; this is primarily treated with Yiyuan San added with Hupo powder (Amber).
Second is Gaolin (Pasty Lin), where turbid fluid drips down like fat or paste; this is primarily treated with Bixie Yin.
Third is Qilin (Qi Lin), characterized by stagnation of Qi and obstruction of the water passages, causing distension, fullness, and pain below the umbilicus; this is primarily treated with Jiasu San.
Fourth is Xuelin (Blood Lin), characterized by accumulation of blood stasis and unbearable cutting pain in the urethra; this is primarily treated with Dihuang Siwu Tang added with Honghua (Carthami Flos), Taoren (Persicae Semen), and Hua Ruishi (Orpiment), or alternatively, combined with Dai Didang Wan.
Fifth is Laolin (Labor Lin), which occurs due to physical exertion and hardship; this is due to Qi deficiency leading to failure of Qi transformation in Zhoudou (Bladder); this is primarily treated with Buzhong Yiqi Tang.
Sixth is Lenglin (Cold Lin), characterized by cold pathogen condensation and closure, preventing water passage; symptoms include cold extremities, cold breath from mouth and nose, and preference for hot drinks; this is primarily treated with Jingui Shenqi Wan.
Furthermore, some cases arise from excessive consumption of metallic and mineral heat-inducing drugs, causing ruined essence to flow and transform into Lin syndrome. Additionally, elderly men with impotence who indulge in sexual desire to emit essence may find that the essence does not exit but rots internally, causing pulling pain in both large and small bowel movements similar to Lin syndrome; the more painful, the more they feel the urge to defecate/urinate, and the more they do so, the more painful it becomes. In such cases, use the aforementioned Bixie Yin, remove Huangbai, add Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen) and Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) to guide out the ruined essence, and subsequently tonify with Liuwei Dihuang Tang; only then will it be beneficial. Lin syndromes are manifold and cannot be discussed by adhering rigidly to a single pattern.
