Grind the herbs into a fine powder, and make pills with refined honey. Each liang (approx. 37g) of powder makes ten pills. Chew one pill before bedtime, dividing it into five to seven small chews, and swallow with Yufeng Decoction (Wind-Expelling Decoction). This clears Lung Qi from above and strengthens Marrow from below.
My commentary: This formula contains many light, ascending, and penetrating ingredients. Although it has the tonifying effects of Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), and Gancao (Licorice Root), the scant tonification cannot withstand the multitude of penetrating actions. If used for patients with abundant Wind-Phlegm obstructing the orifices and unconsciousness, it is appropriate; however, if used for patients with deficient Qi and Blood and unsettled Spirit leading to coma, it will hasten death. Students should understand this principle.
Er Dan San (Two Cinnabar Powder) treats forgetfulness, nourishes Spirit, stabilizes Will, harmonizes Blood, internally calms the Heart Spirit, and externally beautifies the skin and interstices.

Grind into a fine powder, make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 to 100 pills per dose, on an empty stomach, swallowed with Yufeng Decoction.

Cut finely, as one dose. Add 3 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), 2 cups of water, decoct to 1 cup, take warm. Twice daily. If caused by wind exposure after labor sweating, where cold condenses causing acne, remove Mangxiao, double Baishao and Danggui. If Urticaria appears, red or white, double Mahuang (nodes removed), Yanchi (Salted Soybean), and Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) to induce sweating. Afterwards, based on the previous formula, add Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) and Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction to Resolve Toxicity), drink all three together, twice daily. For dysuria, remove Mahuang, add Huashi and Lianqiao, decoct, and mix in Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) powder, 1 qian bi. For wandering pain in waist and hypochondrium, add Xiaoshi (Natrii Nitras), Danggui, and Gancao, decoct, and mix in Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) and Haijinsha (Lygodii Spora) powders, 1 qian bi each. For Tetanus, if pathogen is in the exterior, disperse with acrid flavors; if in the interior, purge with bitter flavors. Use this formula to disperse both. After sweating and purging to unblock Qi and Blood and expel Wind, add Jingjiesui and Dahuang, decoct, and mix in Quanxie (Scorpio) and Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) powders, 1 qian bi each. For various Wind-induced spasms, pediatric acute/chronic convulsive disorders, constipation, sudden severe pathogenic heat, dry intestines/stomach, nocturnal bruxism, upward deviation of eyes, restlessness, tendon cramping and palpitations, double Dahuang and Zhizi, decoct, and mix in Fuling powder, 1 qian bi; if muscle twitching occurs, mix in Qianghuo powder, 1 qian bi. For Wind injuring Lung causing cough and asthma, add Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Jiegeng, and Ziwan (Asturi Flos). For trauma injuries, joint pain, and stagnant evil blood in the waist, add Danggui and Dahuang, decoct, and mix in Ruxiang (Olibanum) and Moyao (Myrrha), 1 qian bi each. To resolve seasonal Cold Damage, add YiYuan San (Benefit Origin Powder), 0.5 liang, plus Congbai, Yanchi, and Shengjiang. Decoct 1 large bowl of water until boiling 5-7 times, take half warm, induce vomiting with goose feather, then take the remaining half. Sweating leads to immediate resolution. For Stroke after drinking alcohol, with fever and splitting headache, add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Congbai, decoct and take for immediate cure. For dizziness and brain heat, nasal congestion with turbid discharge, add Bohe and Huanglian, decoct and take. *Neijing* states: "When Gallbladder heat transfers to the Brain, the nose feels pungent, forming Biyuan (Nasal Sinusitis)." Biyuan is continuous turbid nasal discharge. For rebellious Qi, decoct the base formula and mix in Muxiang powder, 1 qian bi. This formula is most effective for He Xi Feng (Crane Knee Wind) following Dysentery, with excellent results.
Da Fangfeng Tang (Great Saposhnikovia Decoction) (Bureau Formula). Expels Wind, regulates Qi, invigorates Blood, and strengthens sinews. Also treats leg weakness and dragging pain after Dysentery, inability to walk, named Li Feng (Dysentery Wind). Or swelling and pain in both legs, with emaciated calves named He Xi Feng (Crane Knee Wind). It is taken for all conditions of numbness, flaccidity, softness, and Wind-Dampness complicated by deficiency, with miraculous efficacy.
Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, remove rhizome) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, remove rhizome, wine-soaked) Huangqi (Astragali Radix) Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, each 1 qian) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 qian 5 fen) Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) Chuan Niuxi (Cyathulae Radix, remove rhizome, wine-soaked) Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root, each 5 fen) Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, each 7.5 fen, processed, peel removed) Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex, remove rough bark, cut finely, stir-fried with ginger juice until fibers break, 1 qian)
Cut finely, as one dose. Add 2 cups of water, 5 slices of ginger, 1 jujube. Decoct to 1 cup, take warm on an empty stomach.
My commentary: This formula uses Danggui, Chuanxiong, Baishao, and Shudihuang to tonify Blood; Renshen, Huangqi, Baizhu, and Gancao to tonify Qi; Qianghuo and Fangfeng to scatter Wind-Dampness and benefit joints; Niuxi and Duzhong to tonify lower back and knees; and Fuzi to propel the Qi of Renshen and Huangqi through the meridians. It is a holy medicine for treating Wei Bi (Flaccidity Obstruction) due to dual deficiency of Qi and Blood complicated by Wind-Dampness, preventing walking. Its treatment of post-dysentery Wind demonstrates this. However, it treats deficiency-type Wei (flaccidity) but not excess-type Feng Bi (Wind Obstruction).
Xi Xian San (Thin Saliva Powder) (Zhongjing Formula). Treats Stroke with abundant Phlegm-Saliva, facial paralysis, and chest diaphragm obstruction.
Mingfan (Alumen, 1 liang, half raw, half calcined) Zhuya Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus, 4 pods, remove skin and strings, roast yellow)
Grind into fine powder. Take 1-2 qian per dose, mixed with warm water, until vomiting occurs.
Du Sheng San (Single Sage Powder) (Hezi Formula). Treats various Wind syndromes with solid obstruction and abundant Phlegm, and various Epilepsy syndromes with overflowing Phlegm-Fluid.
Tianguadi (Cucumeritis Fructus, 1 liang, roasted yellow, best when naturally fallen ripe)
Grind into fine powder. Take 0.5 qian per dose, adjusted for patient's deficiency/excess, mixed with sour vinegar juice, until vomiting occurs. Vomiting therapy should be performed on clear weather days; difficult on dark moon days, unless emergency. Fast overnight before treatment. If no vomiting after medication, administer hot vinegar water. For Wind-Epilepsy vomiting, add slightly roasted Quanxie (Scorpio), 0.5 qian. If parasites are present, add 5-7 drops of pig fat, 1 qian Xionghuang (Realgar) powder; severe cases add 0.5 qian Yuanhua (Kadsurae Flos) powder to immediately expel worms. For damp edema/fullness, add 1 qian Chixiaodou (Adzuki Bean). Thus, this drug should not be used frequently; primarily distinguish deficiency/excess. Use for excess, not for deficiency. After vomiting, administer drugs that descend fire, promote Qi, calm Spirit, and stabilize Will.

(Medical Case)
My eldest brother's wife, He Shi, aged 57, was obese and fair-skinned. In early spring, she suffered Stroke, suddenly collapsed unconscious, body stiff and straight, mouth locked unable to speak, throat sound like sawing, unable to ingest fluids. Six pulses were floating, large, wiry, and slippery, right stronger than left. Administered 1 qian of Lilü (Veratri Viridis Rhizoma) powder with a little Shexiang (Moschus) into the nasal cavity. Vomited approx. 1 sheng of Phlegm, regained consciousness, body slightly movable. Urgently decocted Xiao Xuming Tang with doubled Mahuang, took two doses consecutively. Covered with blankets, sweated, gradually revived, able to turn over, but right hand/foot paralyzed, speech slurred. Later used Erchen Tang with Chuanxiong, Danggui, Baishao, Fangfeng, Qianghuo, combined with Zhuli and Jiangzhi, taking 2-3 doses daily. If stool not passed in 3-4 days, speech would fail; then used Dongyuan Daoshi Wan (Dongyuan Stagnation-Guiding Pill) or Runchang Wan (Moisten Intestine Pill) to mildly purge, restoring speech. Managed thus until age 64, when she died of another illness.
