When a male infant experiences convulsions, his eyes look to the left without sound, and to the right with sound. (This is due to the mutual overcoming of the Five Elements; one must also observe the specific time of onset.)
Convulsions occurring in the morning are caused by tidal fever during the Yin, Mao, and Chen hours. Symptoms include upward deviation of the eyes, trembling of the limbs, flow of hot saliva from the mouth, and stiffness of the neck tendons. This indicates excessive flourishing of Liver Wood. Treatment should tonify the Kidney to suppress the Liver. For tonifying the Kidney, use Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill); for suppressing the Liver, use Xieqing Wan (Drain the Green Pill).
Convulsions occurring at noon are caused by tidal fever during the Si, Wu, and Wei hours. Symptoms include palpitations and fright of the Heart Spirit, upward deviation of the eyes, redness of the sclera, lockjaw, flow of saliva, and trembling of the limbs. This indicates excessive flourishing of Heart Fire. Treatment should tonify the Liver to drain the Heart. For tonifying the Liver, use Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill); for draining the Heart, use Daochi San (Direct the Red Powder) or Lengjing Wan (Cooling Convulsion Pill).
Convulsions occurring in the evening are caused by tidal fever during the Shen, You, and Xu hours. Symptoms include convulsions accompanied by panting, slight oblique deviation of the eyes, sleeping with eyes open (exposing the eyeballs), cold extremities, and passage of thin, pale yellow watery stool. This indicates a Lung pathology. Treatment should tonify the Spleen to suppress the Heart and Liver. For tonifying the Spleen, use Yihuang San (Yellow-Protecting Powder); for suppressing the Heart, use Daochi San (Direct the Red Powder); for suppressing the Liver, use Xieqing Wan (Drain the Green Pill).
Convulsions occurring at night are caused by tidal fever during the Hai, Zi, and Chou hours. Symptoms include mild convulsions but restless sleep, normal body temperature (without high fever), tight and obliquely deviated eyes, phlegm rattle in the throat, silver-brown stool, indigestion of milk and food, and lethargy with difficulty waking. Treatment should tonify the Spleen to suppress the Heart. For tonifying the Spleen, use Yihuang San (Yellow-Protecting Powder); for suppressing the Heart, use Daochi San (Direct the Red Powder) or Liangjing Wan (Cooling Convulsion Pill).
Convulsions caused by Wind-Cold invasion: The breath expelled from the mouth is hot; the child yawns and feels irritable and stifled; there is trembling of the limbs. Treatment should employ dispersing methods. Use Daqing Gao (Great Cyan Ointment). Children with innate constitutional weakness are prone to this condition.
Convulsions caused by Food Retention: The body temperature is normal; the child sleeps frequently and produces excess saliva; or vomiting occurs with loss of appetite followed by convulsions. One should first stop the convulsions. After the convulsions subside, administer Baibing Zi (White Cake Pills), followed by Anshen Wan (Calming the Spirit Pill).
Convulsions occurring within the first 100 days of life present as either True or False syndromes: True cases result in death after only two or three episodes; False cases involve frequent attacks but are not severe. True cases stem from internal generation of Fright Epilepsy; False cases result from external invasion of Wind-Cold. Because Qi and Blood are not yet solid, they cannot resist the pathogenic factors, leading to convulsions. How to identify a False case? Hot breath indicates a False case. Treatment should employ dispersing methods using Daqing Gao (Great Cyan Ointment), along with Fontanelle Application Method and Body Bathing Method.

Xieqing Wan (See previous chapter on Infantile Convulsions).

For children over three years old, give 3-5 cakes; for younger children, 1-2 cakes. Administer with decocted Bohe Tang (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba soup) before bedtime.
Fontanelle Application Method:

Preparation: Grind all ingredients into a fine, uniform powder. Mix with cooked jujube meat to form a paste. Apply evenly onto fresh cotton wool and stick to the fontanelle, leaving about one finger's width exposed around the edges. Frequently warm the hands over fire and apply heat compresses. This method and the bathing method are suitable for infants around 100 days old.
Body Bathing Method: Treats Tai Fei (neonatal obesity/lipid accumulation), Tai Qie (congenital deficiency), and Tai Re (neonatal heat).
