[Li Dongyuan] Those who can see far but not near have an excess of Yang Qi and a deficiency of Yin Qi, which constitutes Blood deficiency with Qi abundance. Cases of Blood deficiency and Qi abundance are characterized by an excess of Fire and a deficiency of Yuan Qi (Original Qi). Fire is the thief/harmful factor of Yuan Qi, Gu Qi (Grain Qi), and Zhen Qi (True Qi). When Yuan Qi arrives, it is slow and harmonious, fine as a thread. When pathogenic Qi arrives, it is tight and strong, like the water of a great river, unstoppable.
[Wang Haizang] The ability of the eyes to see far is attributed to the presence of Fire. The inability to see near is attributed to the absence of Water. The treatment method should focus on tonifying the Kidney.
[Li Dongyuan] Dizhi Wan (Holly and Rehmannia Pill) treats conditions where the eyes cannot see near but can see far, as well as severe wind pathogens leading to leprosy-like conditions, treating all such cases.
Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, roasted, four liang) Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Rhizoma, heart removed, four liang) Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, stir-fried, two liang) Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos, skin removed, two liang)
All ingredients are ground into a fine powder. Honey is refined to make pills, sized like tung tree seeds. Take 100 pills per dose, washed down with clear tea or warm wine, after meals. Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) also treats this condition.
Those who can see near but not far have a deficiency of Yang Qi and an excess of Yin Qi, which constitutes Qi deficiency with Blood abundance. Blood abundance indicates an excess of Yin Fire. Qi deficiency indicates the decline of Yuan Qi (Original Qi). This is a sign of aging in the elderly.
[Wang Haizang] The ability of the eyes to see near is attributed to the presence of Water. The inability to see far is attributed to the absence of Fire. The treatment method should focus on tonifying the Heart.
[Li Dongyuan] Dingzhi Wan (Calming Spirit Pill) (from *Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang*) treats conditions where the eyes cannot see far but can see near.
