In cases of wind-stroke (stroke), severe itching that is difficult to control often occurs; therefore, this section is appended hereafter and can be used in conjunction with the formulas for wind-stroke mentioned previously.
[Zhu Danxi] states in *Mai Yin Zheng Zhi*: "All itching is due to deficiency." When blood fails to nourish the muscle and cuticle (skin pores and interstices), itching results. One should use tonifying medicines to nourish Yin-blood; when the blood harmonizes and the skin becomes moist, the itching will naturally cease. To treat deficiency-type itching on the body, decoct Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) with Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩), and take it mixed with Fuping (Lemnae Herba, 浮萍) powder. For various types of itching resembling insects crawling, which indicates a deficiency condition, first administer a large dose of Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction). Use one dou of salt and one shi of water, boil until reduced by half, and bathe warmly three times; this can treat all kinds of wind-induced itching (*Mi Yao*). For various itchings, take Lingxiao Hua (Campsis grandiflora flower) powder, administered with wine, one or two qian. This flower rapidly tonifies Yin-blood. (*Bencao Gangmu* records: Lingxiao Hua treats wind-heat, body itching, wandering wind, wind-rash, and blood stasis; it can be used together with Cang'er Ye, 苍耳叶).
Tao Anren was obese and robust but suffered from chronic pruritus. Self-medicating with wind-dispelling drugs gradually led to a deficiency syndrome, characterized by numbness and weakness of the body, bitter and dry mouth, and frequent urination.
Prescription: Baizhu (Atractodis Rhizoma, 白术, 2 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 陈皮), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, 芍药), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩, 1 liang), Fuling (Poria, 茯苓, 7 qian), Guishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 归身), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, 黄芪), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 人参), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 川芎), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, 青皮), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 苍术), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis, 木通, 5 qian), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, 黄柏, wine-fried), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus, 五味子), Gancao (Licorice Root, 甘草, honey-fried, 2 qian).
Take thirty pills of Huangjing Wan (Polygonati Rhizoma Pill) with each dose.
*[Ling Shu]*: Deficient evil attacks between the skin layers; its qi emits outward, causing the couli (skin pores and interstices) to open and the fine hairs to tremble. As the qi moves back and forth, itching arises. (*Ci Jie Zhen Xie Pian*)
[Zhu Danxi]: Heshouwu San (Polygoni Multiflori Powder): Treats whole-body itching caused by wind-cold-dampness.
Prescription: Heshouwu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix, 何首乌, salt-fried), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma, 天麻), Gouqi (Lycii Fructus, 枸杞), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix, 生地), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 熟地) (each 1 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 防风), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 川芎), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, 薄荷), Hezi (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus, 诃子), Gancao (Licorice Root, 甘草) (each ban liang).
Grind the above into powder. Take 2-3 qian per dose, taken on an empty stomach with warm wine; warm tea is also acceptable.
*[He Ji Ju Fang]*: Treats itching that persists due to wind qi lodging in the skin. Equal parts of Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum, 蝉蜕) and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, 薄荷) are ground into powder. Take 1 qian bi (a measure roughly equivalent to a spoonful) mixed with wine, three times daily.
Another formula: For persistent itching due to wind qi lodging in the skin, roasted Fengfang (Vespa Nidus, 蜂房) and Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum, 蝉蜕) in equal parts are ground into powder. Take 1 qian bi mixed with wine, two to three times daily.
*[He Ji Ju Fang]*: Xiaofeng San (Eliminate Wind Powder): Treats skin numbness, urticaria, and itching.
Prescription: Fuling (Poria, 茯苓), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 川芎), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 羌活), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 人参), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica, 荆芥穗), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 防风), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba, 藿香), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum, 蝉蜕), Bai Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, 白僵蚕, fried, silk removed), Gancao (Licorice Root, 甘草, fried) (each 2 liang), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 浓朴), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 陈皮) (each ban liang).
Grind the above into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with tea or wine.
*[Sheng Ji Zong Lu]*: Treats unceasing itching from wind-rash.
Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus, 枳壳) 3 liang, stir-fried until slightly yellow, pith removed. Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose at any time, decocted in one cup of water until reduced to six-tenths, strain, and drink.
*[Sheng Ji Zong Lu]*: Treats women's pruritic rash with unceasing body itching. Use equal parts of Cang'er Hua Ye Zi (Xanthii Folium et Flos, 苍耳花叶子), crush and sieve into powder. For the first administration, mix with wine and take 1 qian bi.
[Zhu Danxi]: To treat all types of itching, eat Yangti Gen (Radix Rheae Palmatae, 羊蹄根); do not consume excessively.
[Li Dongyuan]: Regarding itching, if scratching provides relief, it is because scratching generates heat (fire transformation). Mildly, it may cause itching; severely, scratching removes the itch because it induces a pungent sensation associated with metal transformation. Pungency disperses fire; thus, when metal transformation appears, the fire transformation resolves.
*[Sheng Ji Zong Lu]*: Treats wind-pruritus and urticaria where the whole body itches and forms sores. Use one sheng of Can Sha (Bombyx Mors Littera, 蚕砂) and one dou of water. Boil until one dou two sheng remains, strain, and wash while hot. Avoid wind.
[Luo Qianfu]: Bath Wash Medicine: Treats all kinds of wind syndromes and generalized pruritus, making the skin lustrous.
Prescription: Gan He Ye (Nelumbinis Folium, 干荷叶, 33 liang), Weilingxian (Synephrosidis Radix, 威灵仙, 15 liang), Ben (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma, 本, 1 jin), Lingling Xiang (Lysimachiae Herba, 零陵香, 1 jin), Mao Xiang (Meliloti Herba, 茅香, 1 liang), Gansong (Nardostachyos Radix et Rhizoma, 甘松), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, 白芷) (each ban jin).
Grind the above into coarse powder. Use 2 liang per bath, placed in a raw silk bag. Add two buckets of water (approx. 4 dou), boil five times until bubbling, keep warm in a windless place, and pour over the body for bathing. Avoid wind for a short time after bathing. If water decreases, add hot water; adjust as appropriate. Do not add cold water or additional herb powder. For treating itching, nothing is better than salt; a concentrated salt decoction is most excellent.
*[Zhang Zhongjing]*: The pulse at the cunkou (radial artery) is slow and slack. Slow indicates cold; slack indicates deficiency. A slack Ying (nutrient) pulse indicates loss of blood; a slack Wei (defensive) pulse indicates wind-stroke. When pathogenic qi enters the meridians, the body itches and urticaria appears. If Heart Qi is insufficient and pathogenic qi enters the interior, there is chest fullness and shortness of breath. A pulse that is slack and large, floating, indicates wind-deficiency; large indicates strong qi. When wind and qi clash, urticaria forms, and the body itches. Itching is called "Xie Feng" (Leaking Wind); if prolonged, it becomes scaly crusts and leprosy-like lesions.
