The "Treatise on Lily Disease" states: Lily disease refers to a condition where the pathogenic factor does not reside in specific meridians, but rather affects all vessels collectively. Patients often appear silent and withdrawn; they desire to eat but cannot, desire to sleep but cannot, and desire to walk but cannot. Sometimes they perceive odors of food, sometimes feeling cold without actual chills, or feeling hot without actual fever. They have a bitter taste in the mouth and dark red urine. Various medications fail to cure it; upon taking medicine, the condition worsens with severe vomiting and diarrhea, as if possessed by spirits. Although the physical appearance seems normal, the pulse is faint and rapid. If headache occurs during urination, recovery takes sixty days. If there is no headache during urination but a sensation of chilliness (Xixi), recovery takes forty days. If urination feels comfortable but dizziness occurs, recovery takes twenty days. Symptoms may manifest before the illness begins, or appear four to five days after onset, or slightly show up after twenty days or one month. Treatment should be tailored to the specific symptoms present. (The *Liuren* book states: This condition is named Lily Shanghan [Cold Damage], often arising from incomplete recovery after severe illnesses such as Shanghan or consumptive disorders, evolving into a peculiar disease.)
After lily disease has been treated with sweating methods, Baihe Zhi Mu Tang (Lily Bulb and Anemarrhena Decoction) is appropriate.
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, seven bulbs, split) Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, three liang, sliced)
First, wash the lily bulbs and soak them in water overnight. When white foam appears, discard the water. Add two cups of well water and decoct until one cup remains; remove the dregs. Separately, add two cups of well water to Zhimu and decoct until one cup remains; remove the dregs. Mix the lily decoction with the Zhimu decoction and decoct together again to obtain one and a half cups. Divide into two doses and take warm.
After lily disease has been treated with purgation methods, Huashi Daizhe Tang (Talcum and Hematite Decoction) is appropriate.
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, seven bulbs, split) Huashi (Talcum, three liang, crushed, wrapped in silk) Daizheshi (Hematitum, size of a bullet, one piece, wrapped in silk)
First, wash the lily bulbs and soak them in water overnight. When white foam appears, discard the water. Add two sheng of well water and decoct until one cup remains; remove the dregs. Separately, use two sheng of water to decoct Huashi and Daizheshi until one sheng remains; remove the dregs. Mix the lily decoction with the Huashi and Daizheshi decoction and decoct together again to obtain one and a half sheng. Divide into doses and take warm.
After lily disease has been treated with emesis methods, Baihe Jizi Tang (Lily Bulb and Egg Yolk Decoction) is appropriate.
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, seven bulbs, split) Jizi Huang (Yolki Galli Galli, one egg yolk)
First, soak the lily bulbs in water overnight. When white foam appears, discard the water. Add two sheng of well water and decoct until one cup remains; remove the dregs. Add the egg yolk, stir evenly, and decoct for five minutes. Take warm.
For lily disease that has not undergone emesis, purgation, or sweating treatments, and where the clinical presentation remains unchanged, Baihe Dihuang Tang (Lily Bulb and Rehmannia Decoction) is appropriate.
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, seven bulbs, split) Sheng Dihuangzhi (Radix Rehmanniae Recens Juice, one sheng)
Wash the lily bulbs and soak them in water overnight. When white foam appears, discard the water. Add two sheng of well water and decoct until one sheng remains; remove the dregs. Add the Rehmannia juice and decoct until one sheng and five he remain. Divide into two doses and take warm. Stop taking the medication once the disease is addressed. The stool will likely become black like lacquer.
If lily disease persists for one month without resolution and transforms into thirst, Baihe Xi Fang (Lily Bulb Washing Formula) is indicated.
Use one sheng of Baihe, soak in ten dou of water overnight, and use the water to wash the body. After washing, eat boiled noodles (Zhu Bing), avoiding salt and fermented soybeans (Chi).
If thirst in lily disease does not resolve, Gualou Muli San (Trichosanthes Root and Oyster Shell Powder) is appropriate.
Gualougen (Radix Trichosanthis) Muli (Ostreae Concha, stir-fried. Equal parts)
Grind into powder. Take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) with warm water, three times daily.
If lily disease manifests with fever (or alternating chills and fever), Baihe Huashi San (Lily Bulb and Talcum Powder) is appropriate.
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, one liang) Huashi (Talcum, three liang)
Grind into powder. Take one fangcun bi with warm water, three times daily. Stop taking when mild diarrhea occurs; the heat will then be eliminated.
When lily disease presents with Yin characteristics, treat it using Yang methods; when it presents with Yang characteristics, treat it using Yin methods. Attacking Yin when Yang signs are present, and additionally inducing sweating, constitutes a counterproductive treatment (Ni). Attacking Yang when Yin signs are present, and additionally using purgation, also constitutes a counterproductive treatment.
