The Qianding (GV21) acupoint is indicated for epilepsy. Wind-induced vertigo, dizziness of the eyes, and pain at the vertex are treated by the Houding (GV19) acupoint. Wind-induced vertigo with fright, wrist pain, Xiefeng (a wind-pathogen disease), and sweating down to the waist are treated by the Yanggu (SI5) acupoint. Brain wind causing eye closure and headache, wind-induced vertigo and eye pain are treated by the Naokong (GB13) acupoint. Sudden wind counterflow with swollen limbs, yawning and chills when exposed to dampness, vexation when hungry, and vertigo after fullness are treated by the Dadu (SP2) acupoint. Head vertigo and eye pain are treated by the Zhiyin (BL67) acupoint.
[Zhu Danxi] A rapid pulse on the left hand indicates excess heat; a choppy pulse indicates static blood. An excess pulse on the right hand indicates phlegm accumulation; a large pulse indicates chronic illness.
Epilepsy is essentially severe vertigo. When phlegm turbidity remains between the diaphragm, the vertigo is mild and does not cause collapse. When phlegm turbidity overflows above the diaphragm, the vertigo is severe, causing collapse to the ground and loss of consciousness, termed Epilepsy. Xu Sibai stated: In adults it is called Dian, in children it is called Xian, but they are essentially the same disease. However, this differs from the collapse caused by Stroke-Wind, Cold-Stroke, Summerheat-Stroke, or Corpse-Jue. Whenever Epilepsy occurs, sounds are made from the mouth; upon approaching recovery, salivary foam is expectorated; after regaining consciousness, it recurs again, occurring intermittently without rest. In cases of Stroke-Wind, Cold-Stroke, Summerheat-Stroke, or Corpse-Jue, there are no sounds during collapse, no salivary foam upon recovery, and no subsequent recurrence; if occasional recurrence happens, it follows the usual patterns of Epilepsy.
[Zhu Danxi] Epileptic disorders belong to Fright and Phlegm; emesis is appropriate. Generally, resolving phlegm is the primary approach, using herbs such as Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), and Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma). Investigating Fire and Phlegm, treating according to their quantity ensures cure. Differentiating Phlegm and Heat: if Heat exists, use cooling herbs to clear the Heart. If Phlegm exists, emetic herbs must be used; after emesis, Dongyuan's Anshen Wan is administered. This condition requires emesis, followed by liver-calming herbs such as Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma).
[Hai Zang] For Chang, Hong, and Fu pulses indicating Wind-Epilepsy, Fright-Epilepsy, mania, and aversion to people and fire, moxa is applied to the 3rd and 9th thoracic vertebrae, and Ju Fang's Miao Xiang Wan is taken. The pill is pierced with a needle, soaked briefly in cold water, and taken as per the formula. For Xian, Xi, and Huan pulses where various epilepsies resemble mania, Li Henan's Wusheng Wan is used. (Miao Xiang Wan formula is found under "Deficiency Vexation".) Qi disorder in the head leads to Jue Ni (reversal of Qi), heavy head, vertigo, and collapse. (Full text in Acupuncture section.) Pathogenic factors clashing with Yang lead to Dian Ji. (See Diagnosis section, below. *Zhen Jing* Nine Needles states: Pathogens entering Yang transform into Dian Ji.) Jue transforming into Dian Ji. (Jue refers to ascending counterflow of Qi.)
*[Su Wen]* The Yellow Emperor asked: People are born with Dian Ji; what is its name? How is it acquired? Qibo replied: The disease is named Tai Bing (Fetal Disease), acquired while in the womb. At that time, the mother suffered great fright, causing Qi to ascend rather than descend, with Essence and Qi dwelling together, thus causing the child to develop Dian Ji. (*Chapter on Rare Diseases*)
All cases of Epilepsy, as well as Stroke-Wind, Cold-Stroke, Summerheat-Stroke, Dampness-Stroke, Qi-Jue, and Corpse-Jue presenting with vertigo, collapse, and loss of consciousness, are caused by pathogenic factors ascending counterflow to the Yang divisions and disrupting the head. Epilepsy is due to Phlegm pathogens ascending counterflow. Stroke-Wind/Cold/Summerheat/Dampness and Qi-Jue/Corpse-Jue are also due to Wind-Cold/Summerheat/Dampness pathogenic factors ascending counterflow. When pathogens ascend counterflow, Qi in the head becomes chaotic; chaotic Qi in the head blocks the meridians and vessels, obstructing the orifices, resulting in deafness, inability to recognize people, unconscious vertigo, and collapse. Because the pathology is located at the vertex, it is called Dian Ji. Treatment involves either inducing emesis to expel phlegm upwards, using sedative/heavy herbs to suppress phlegm downwards, internally dissolving phlegm to prevent Qi counterflow, using light dispersing agents for the Upper Jiao following Wind-Cold/Summerheat/Dampness methods, or acupuncture/moxibustion on head meridians to guide Qi. All these methods can unblock the meridians at the vertex, open the orifices, and prevent vertigo.
Thus, the "Dian" in Epilepsy, the "Dian" in Jue transforming into Dian Ji, and the "Dian" (vertex) in Xuan Mao Dian Ji refer to the same disease. Wang Bing mistakenly divided Dian into two diseases; only Sun Simiao unified them. Here, I specifically place the scriptures regarding Qi disorder at the vertex at the beginning of the Epilepsy chapter, so that people know the disease has a source and treatment has a basis.
*[Ju Fang]* Bixia Dan treats five types of epilepsy. (Formula found in Deficiency/Excess section.)
*[Shi Yi De Xiao Fang]* For treating hidden wind, use Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Baifuzi (Typhonii Rhizoma), and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), each half liang, and Bai Fan (Alumen) two liang. Take one papaya, cut off the top, remove the pulp, insert the powdered herbs, replace the top, wrap in dough, and bake until cooked. Pound into a paste to form pills. Also, take Er Jiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus Spina) two cun, crush finely, soak in half a cup of wine overnight. Upon attack, take nineteen of the aforementioned pills, place in the mouth, and wash down with wine. Expelling the phlegm leads to cure. After regaining consciousness, take thirty pills daily with Ginger Decoction.
For Wind-Epilepsy and Heart-Wind disease, use three stalks of Er Jiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus Spina), crush, filter juice, boil to a thick paste, spread on paper, dry, cut into pieces the size of small coins. Soak in warm grain water, remove paper, instill into both nostrils, about one clam shell volume per side. Saliva will flow shortly after; bite a chopstick to drain saliva completely, then take Phlegm-Resolving Pills.
Daizheshi (Hematitum, one liang, raw) Bai Fan (Alumen, two liang, raw)

*[Su Wen]* Spring pulse corresponds to Liver. Excessive Spring pulse indicates external disease, irritability, sudden vertigo/dizziness leading to Dian Ji. (Full text in Treatment section. Pulse coming string-taut, solid, and strong is excessive. Year of Wood Excess,) severely, sudden irritability, vertigo/dizziness leading to Dian Ji. (Full text in Climate Influence annotations.)
[Zhu Danxi] Treating Patrol Captain's wife's epilepsy: Tongsheng San two qian half, decocted with three slices of ginger, followed by Xijiao Wan thirty pills.
*[Bao Ming Ji]* Fangfeng Tongsheng San
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, joints not removed, each five qian) Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, each one liang) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus) Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica, each two qian half) Huashi (Talcum, three liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, one liang)
Grind to coarse powder. Take one liang each time, decoct with ginger, take warm. Twice daily. If labor sweat meets wind, cold condenses causing 'Fu', stagnation causes acne. This is labor sweat exiting the Xuan Fu (pores), coagulated lipid. Remove Mangxiao, double Shaoyao and Danggui, disperse Wind in Xuan Fu, regulate Ying and Wei. Commonly called Wind Prickles, or generating Urticaria, red or white. Double Mahuang, Yanchi (Fermented Soybean), Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) to induce sweating. Remove Mahuang joints. Also remove Mangxiao, as salty flavors enter Blood and congeal internally, hence not used. After sweating, add Siwu Tang and Huanglian Jiedu Tang to the previous formula, drink three medicines combined, twice daily. Thus *Neijing* says: Disperse with bitter flavors. Because heat is in muscle/surface, connecting to interior. Dysuria/obstruction, remove Mahuang, add Huashi and Lianqiao, mix Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) powder one qian bi into the decoction. Mahuang acts on exterior, not interior, hence removed. Pain radiating in waist/flanks, add Xiaoshi (Natrii Nitras), Danggui, Gancao, two qian each dose, mix Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) and Haijinsha (Lygodii Spora) powder one qian each. Thus scripture says: Waist is the mansion of Kidney. For Tetanus, if in exterior, disperse with pungent; if in interior, purge with bitter, combined with dispersion. After sweating/purging, unblock Ying/Blood,驱除 Wind pathogen, add Jingjie Sui and Dahuang two qian each per liang, mix Quanxie (Scorpio) powder one qian, Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) powder one qian. For various Wind-Epilepsy spasms, pediatric acute/chronic惊风 (Convulsive Disorder), constipation, violent pathogenic heat, dry intestines/stomach, night sweats, teeth grinding, upward staring, sleep talking, tendon twitching, palpitations, muscle twitching, add Dahuang two qian, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) two qian, Fuling (Poria) powder two qian bi per liang. If muscle twitching, mix Qianghuo powder one qian. Scripture says: Muscle twitching is called Mild Wind. Wind injuring Lung, cough/asthma, add Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Ziwan (Asteri Radix) two qian each per liang. For trauma/injury, joint pain, stagnant evil blood in abdomen, add Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) three qian half each per liang, mix Moyao (Myrrha) and Ruxiang (Olibanum) powder two qian each. For relieving Four Seasons Shanghan, internal/external injury, add Yiyuan San one liang, Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) ten stems, Yanchi (Fermented Soybean) one he, Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) half liang, one bowl water. Decoct together for 5-7 boils, or decoct to small bowl. Take half warm/cold. Insert chopsticks to induce vomiting. After vomiting, take remaining half, slightly warm. Sweating resolves immediately. If wind-stroke after drinking alcohol, body heat/headache like breaking, add Huanglian Xu (Coptidis Radix Stamen) two qian, Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) ten stems. Follow method for immediate cure. Do not use Guizhi Tang or Mahuang Tang to resolve. Vertigo, brain heat, nasal congestion, continuous turbid discharge, add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) two qian half each per liang. *Neijing* says: Gallbladder transferring heat to Brain causes Xin E Bi Yuan. Bi Yuan is continuous turbid discharge. Wang's annotation: Unclear Gallbladder fluid becomes turbid discharge; if continuous like a spring, it is called Bi Yuan. This is excess in Foot-Taiyang and Foot-Yangming meridians. If Qi counterflows, mix Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) powder one qian.
*[Su Wen]* Heart pulse full/large indicates Epilepsy with tendon spasms.
[Zhang Zhongjing] Fengyin Tang clears Heat Epilepsy, also treats adult Fengyin, pediatric fright-epilepsy convulsions, occurring dozens of times daily, untreatable by physicians. Also treats Leg Wind.

Thirteen ingredients, refine honey to make pills, size of bullet, coat with Jinbo. Winter: dissolve in warm water. Summer: cool water. Also treats deficiency-consumption fever/cough, slurred speech/stiff tongue. Three doses daily.
*[Ling Shu]* Liver pulse small/tense indicates Epilepsy with tendon spasms. (Wang's annotation: Liver nourishes tendons and stores Blood; Liver Qi affected by Cold causes Epilepsy with tendon spasms.) Two Yin tense indicates Epileptic Jue. (Same.) [He Hanzhong] Previously, Xiang Kai's Lady Wan Yan had spasms. First right arm and leg spasmed 60-70 times, then left arm and leg 60-70 times after a while, not improving. Eyes fixed straight, coma/unconscious for months. Sought my treatment. First induced vomiting of 3-4 sheng cold-phlegm. Then used Daoshui Yugong San to purge 20+ times. Then took Tongsheng San (pungent-cooling agent). Recovered in few days.
[Luo Qianfu] Method for boiling Ricinus Seeds treats all epilepsies, regardless of duration.
Bimazi (Ricini Semen, peel removed, kernel, two liang) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, whiskers removed, chopped bean-sized, one liang)
In silver vessel, one bowl water, slow fire boil. Add water when dry. Boil for three days and two nights. Remove, discard Huanglian, use only Ricinus kernels. Air dry, do not expose to sun. Use bamboo knife to cut each seed into four pieces. Take five pieces per dose (twenty pieces total). Take warm with Schizonepeta Decoction after meal. (Those taking Ricinus Kernel must avoid soybeans for life; violation causes abdominal distension and death.)
[Zhu Danxi] Treating a woman. Age 45, many births, abdominal pain when touching fetus. Likes drinking three cups of wine nightly before sleep. Husband violent/joking, uses wine to vent anger. Suddenly after Mid-Autumn Festival, Epilepsy worsened significantly. Eyes rolled up, waving hands/throwing feet, very strong, all large tendons moving, throat sound like sawing, salivary foam flowing from corners of mouth. Lasted one shichen (two hours). Symptoms quieted, resembling deep sleep, completely unconscious. Half hour later, lower abdomen gradually painful, rising to heart, severe pain, sweating like rain, from head to breast. Lasted half hour, pain decreased, sweat stopped. During pain, she described her pain. Other speech erroneous, did not answer questions, unconscious. After pain settled, slept deeply as before. Epilepsy and pain alternated, day and night without rest. After two nights, summoned me to pulse. During pain, pulse four-and-a-half beats, string-like but not quite, left weaker than right. I dared not give medicine, waited for Epilepsy attack to observe form/pulse. Next attack, six pulses hidden, only large tendons moving under fingers. Eye whites green, face not green. Hand movement triple foot movement. Asked her: during pain, must press heavily. During Epilepsy, sweat definitely does not come out. Husband confirmed. I said: Not a death case. If able to swallow medicine, easy to treat. Tried pouring Tiao Xiang Fuzi powder. As Epilepsy subsided slightly, swallowed half cup. Ordered urgent preparation of Bamboo Sap, not ready yet. Pain flared. I reasoned: Liver has Wrath Pathogen, due to Blood deficiency, Qi moves alone, thus Spleen affected. Between Lung/Stomach, old Wine-Phlegm existed, depressed by Liver Qi causing pain. Wine likes movement, ascends/descends. Entering inside causes pain, exiting outside causes Epilepsy. Seizing the moment it enters inside, urgently puncture Datun (LR1), Xingjian (LR2), Zhongwan (CV12) points, apply moxibustion simultaneously. Less moxa on feet, finished first. Abdominal pain gradually moved down to waist and stopped. Slept briefly, Epilepsy recurred as before, symptoms halved. Poured Bamboo Sap with little Ginger Juice, drank most of a cup. Pouring coincided with Epilepsy subsiding, just sleeping deeply as before. Unconscious since then. One day two nights, already abandoned. I advised her: Body not feverish. Sweating due to pain. Constipation for 5-6 days. Since I came, no urine seen. Not a death case,
