(If Sheng Huangqi is unavailable, double the amount of Shengma). Duhuo (each 3 fen), Shexiang (1 qian).
The above herbs are chopped. Each dose is 3 qian, decocted with one *zhan* (approx. 200ml) of water until reduced to 7/10, taken warm. For patients with constipation, add Dahuang.
Neituo San (also known as Huxin San): Within one to three days of onset, it is advisable to administer more than ten doses consecutively.
Zhen Lvdou Fen (1 liang), Ming Ruxiang (0.5 liang: stir-fry slowly in a silver or earthenware vessel, stirring with fingers until dry, pour out quickly, cool by fanning, and grind into an extremely fine powder).
Grind the above herbs uniformly. Each dose is 2-3 qian, mixed with thickly decocted Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction), sipped slowly and frequently, ensuring the medicinal effect remains in the chest and diaphragm. If toxic heat rushes to the Heart causing vomiting and rebellious Qi, this formula is highly suitable. (However, if vomiting and rebellious Qi are caused by Cold, this formula is contraindicated; pungent-hot herbs should be used instead.)
Danxi stated: The Lv Dou (Mung Bean) in Neituo San resolves Dan Du (carbuncle toxin) and treats Shi Du (lithiasis-related toxins); its sweet flavor enters the Yangming Stomach channel, and its cold nature tonifies, serving as the Sovereign herb. Ruxiang removes malignant swelling, enters the Shaoyin channel, has a warm nature and moves freely, serving as the Assistant. Gancao has a slow/moderating nature, resolves toxins from metals, stones, and various drugs, serving as the Envoy. This formula is specifically designed for carbuncles arising from the ingestion of Dan Shi (cinnabar and mineral pills). If carbuncles arise without such ingestion, this may not be an essential formula. Furthermore, Neituo San is cooling in nature; treating vomiting aligns with the principle of descending Fire.
[Zhongjing] Paiong Tang Formula
Gancao (2 liang), Jiegeng (3 liang), Shengjiang (1 liang), Dazao (10 pieces).
These four ingredients are boiled in 3 *sheng* (approx. 600ml) of water to yield 1 *sheng*, taken warm at 5 he (approx. 100ml) per dose, twice daily.
[Bencao] Tuoli Paiong, Shengxi San.
Zaojiaoci (any quantity, select coarse, large, dark purple ones).
Place in a bottle, seal tightly with salt mud, burn over charcoal until the substance's nature is preserved but charred externally, cool, remove, and grind into a fine powder. Each dose is 1 qian, taken with thin warm wine; in summer months, take with aged rice water.
[Jiegu] Bao'an Tang treats sores by supporting the interior, promoting rapid rupture of established abscesses.
Gualou (one fresh one, peel, roast on fire), Moyao (transparent quality, 1 qian, grind), Jinyinhua, Gancao, Shengjiang (each 0.5 liang).
Grind into fine powder. Use 3 *sheng* of good unfermented wine, decoct in a silver/earthenware vessel to 1 *sheng*. Divide into three doses, drink completely. For mild cases, one dose suffices. Use this if interior-supporting herbs fail to disperse and new sores appear.
[Jingyao] Zuomu Yinzi
Gan Zuo Mu Ye (4.5 liang), Gan Heye Zhongxin Di (dried lotus petiole center), Gan Xuancgen (dried daylily root), Gancao Jie (licorice joints), Diyü (each 1 liang).
Finely chop. Each dose is 0.5 liang, decocted in 2 bowls of water to 1 bowl. Divide into two doses, morning and evening. Unruptured lesions will resolve spontaneously; ruptured ones will dry up. Heti (lotus petiole) removes bad blood; Xuangen drains water, resolves toxins, benefits the chest/diaphragm; Zuomu has thorns that drive out pathogens; Diyü treats lower jiao blood diseases. For mild/small conditions, reliance on this is possible.
[Jingyao] Che'ao San
Che'ao (1 liang, entirely red. Bencao states: Che'ao resolves alcohol toxicity), Sheng Gancao, Qingfen (5 fen).
Grind together into fine powder. Each dose is 4 qian, taken with thickly decocted Gualou wine at the fifth watch (3-5 AM). Continue until foul matter is discharged. If ineffective, repeat. Efficacy surpasses Wuxiang San. (Bencao states: Che'ao is a large clam, also called Shen.)
Another Prescription
Che'ao (four pieces, sealed with yellow mud, fired red, remove fire toxicity overnight), Gualou (one piece, peeled, roasted on tile until fragrant), Dengxin (30 stems), Gancao Jie (5 fen).
Make into coarse powder. One dose: decoct in 2 cups of wine to 1 cup, strain, add 1 large spoonful of honey, mix well. Take 0.8 cup of wine mixed with 2 qian of Che'ao powder and a little Nifen (calomel), warm, on an empty stomach. Effectiveness is indicated by discharge of foul matter and yellow phlegm.
Danxi said: One version of Che'ao San uses Qingfen as assistant, another uses Dengxin. Both reduce swelling, clear toxins, and drain accumulation. They are steady and reliable for mild conditions.
Treating Back Sores: Jingjie Sui, Mubiezi Ren, Dahuang, Gui Tou, Gancao Jie. Except for Jingjie Sui as Sovereign, others are equal parts. Decoct in wine and water (1 bowl each) to 7/10. Drink facing east on an empty stomach to discharge accumulation; stop when eating porridge. If hardened nodules form, use Chuanlianzi (7 seeds), burnt to ash, taken with wine. Then 14 seeds, then 21 seeds. After three courses, even hardened nodules will shrink. (Tao Shi.)
[Qianjin] Loulu Tang treats carbuncles, ulcers, Dan Du, foul flesh, epidemic heat-toxin red swelling.
Loulu, Lianqiao, Huangqin, Bailian, Zhike, Shengma, Fencǎo, Mahuang, Poxiao (each 1 liang), Dahuang (1.5 liang).
Except for Poxiao, each dose is 2 qian, decocted in 1 *zhan* of water with 3 slices of ginger and 3 leaves of Bohe, taken warm. Effectiveness is indicated by purgation.
[Jingyao] Loulu Tang
Sheng Huangqi, Lianqiao, Chenxiang, Loulu (each 1 liang), Fencǎo (0.5 liang), Dahuang (1 liang).
Grind into fine powder. Each dose is 2 qian, taken with Jiang Zao Tang (Ginger-Jujube Decoction).
Neixiao Shengma Tang treats robust Qi and Blood; for carbuncles/ulcers with obstruction of urination and defecation.
Shengma, Dahuang (each 2 liang), Huangqin (1.5 liang), Zhishi (bran-fried), Danggui, Shaoyao, Gancao (roasted. each 1 liang).
Chop, decoct in water, take before meals.
[Luo Qianfu] Neixiao Wan treats initial swelling, Luoli scrofula, stagnation of heat-toxin, resolving internally upon ingestion.
Bohe Ye, Zaojiao (non-borer, boiled soft. each 0.5 jin, decoct into paste), Qianniu (0.5 jin, take first flour), Qingpi, Chenpi (each 1 liang), Chenxiang (0.5 liang), Guangzhu (processed), Jingsanleng (processed. each 3 qian).
Grind into powder, mix with Qianniu flour, bind with decocted paste into pills the size of mung beans. Each dose is 30 pills, taken with Lianqiao decoction after meals.
[Sun Taoren] Single-boiled Dahuang Tang (For solid, deep, rapid pulse; those consuming rich foods/meat; severe constipation. Use with caution.)
Jinwen Dahuang (wine-washed, peeled).
Chop this single herb to hemp-seed size, boil in water, and take.
[Jingyao] Shenxian Zhuodu Wan resolves all toxins, including injuries from foxes, poisonous rats, toxic mushrooms, pufferfish, meat of plague-dead cattle/horses, snake/dog bites, and malicious insects. Also treats carbuncles, back sores, fish-umbilicus sores (often misidentified as carbuncles leading to death), and various wind-induced sores, scabies, and red tumors.
Wubeizi (beaten, washed, dried, 3 liang), Shanzigua (peeled, cleaned, dried, 1 liang), Shexiang (2 qian, ground in), Qianjinzi (remove shell, grind, remove oil, take frost, 1 liang), Shandougen (1 liang), Hongya Daji (remove roots, wash, dry, 1.5 liang), Quanxie, Zhusha, Xionghuang (each 1 liang).
Except for Qianjinzi and Shexiang, grind the seven herbs into fine powder, mix separately with the ground herbs, bind with glutinous rice drink into 40 pills. Each dose is 1 pill, ground with Shengjiang juice, Bohe juice, and well water. A woman with chronic consumption disease took one pill, vomited and passed over a thousand small worms at once, and recovered within half a month. Danxi said: In Shenxian Zhuodu Wan, Wubeizi disinfects, kills parasites, and resolves wind as Sovereign; Shanzigua, Qianjinzi, and Daji are expelling/draining agents; assisted by Shexiang to ascend and disperse. Using it to secure the interior while releasing the exterior is inappropriate. However, if internal organs have accumulated toxins/deep-rooted parasites and the body is not deficient, it is a powerful medicine. Ancient military strategy calls righteous troops "Yi Bing"; penal law calls compassionate punishment "Xiang Xing." Warn against light use.
[Lingshu] Emperor asked: How to distinguish Carbuncle (Yong) from Ulcer (Ju)? Qibo answered: Ying and Wei stagnate in the meridians, causing blood to congeal and not flow. Wei Qi follows but cannot pass, obstructing flow, thus generating heat. Persistent high heat causes flesh to rot, forming pus. However, it does not sink into marrow, does not cause burning/drying, and does not damage the Five Zang organs, hence named Yong (Carbuncle).
Liu Juanzi said: Pain in Yong is only on the skin surface. Also: Yong erupts like burning thatch. Initially millet-sized, palm-sized after 2-3 days, bowl-sized after 5-7 days; easy to treat. If cold swelling, thirst, and rebellious Qi occur, difficult to cure.
Emperor asked: What is Ju? Qibo answered: Intense heat sinks into muscles/skin, drying tendons/marrow, connecting internally to Five Zang organs, exhausting Qi/Blood. Where the Yong was, bone/tendons/flesh are destroyed, hence named Ju (Ulcer/Gangrene).
Liu Juanzi said: Ju eruption may look like small boils; touching causes heart-piercing pain; edges rise slightly like orange peel pores; color is red but incomplete; pus/water is scant. By day 7-8, pain, oppression, panting, and urgency persist. Also: Initial high swelling suddenly flattening indicates internal attack. Jingyao states: Ju sites that are neither hot nor painful, sunken, indicate internal origin, are difficult to treat, and often fatal.
Ju presents with pale, hard skin on the upper body, resembling ox neck skin. Yong presents with thin, glossy skin on the surface. These are their signs. (Jingyao in Yong-Ju chapter: Pain on slight pressure indicates shallow disease; pain on deep pressure indicates deep disease. This is the method to distinguish Yong from Ju.)
Liu Juanzi said: There are three grades of Yong/Ju. Superficial toxin belongs to Fu organs (like Yang syndrome in Shanghan). Deep toxin belongs to Zang organs (like Yin syndrome in Shanghan). Violent toxin moving through meridians, varying depth, affecting all Zang/Fu, is hard to regulate, requiring urgent treatment (like simultaneous contraction of Cold in Shanghan, difficult to treat). For Yong eruptions anywhere, regardless of deficiency/excess, high swelling, luster, or pain, if confined to skin, with heat/distension or itching/pain but no malignant signs, initially use warm herbs to calm Qi, then use Paiong to open the aperture.
"Calming Qi" in treating Yong refers to formulas like Xijiao Yin, using Xijiao, Lianqiao, Loulu, Gancao, Danggui, Rougui, all exterior-releasing herbs. "Opening Aperture" refers to methods like spine needles, using Zaojiaoci as Sovereign, assisted by Gancao, Chuanxiong, Ruxiang, which are interior-supporting herbs. However, Jiegu and Dongyuan's formulas for exterior release and interior support are more stable.
Ju eruptions anywhere, regardless of size. (Jingyao defines Ju as 1-2 chi wide, which is incorrect.) Only those starting on the back, 1-3 chi wide, with thick, dark purple/black, irregular high swelling, internal stabbing pain, fullness/oppression, heavy limb pain, and anterior chest pain. Eruptions elsewhere are manageable. Only in deficient areas or near bones/tendons, if pus/toxin does not rupture, damaging bone/tendon/flesh constitutes Ju. This belongs to deep-seated Zang organ toxins, characterized by Qi stagnation, hardness, and firmness. Slow treatment is unsuitable; must tonify Zang internally, penetrate skin externally, soften evenly to allow pus breakthrough. Use Neituo herbs to strengthen Zang Qi, drain pus, and harmonize Qi. Unlike Yong's superficial toxin, do not treat them identically.
For all sores/swellings, if initially high-swollen but suddenly flattens after 5-7 days, this indicates internal attack. Urgently use Neituo San and Neibu Tang to tonify Zang/Fu. Fear most of membrane perforation; if membrane pierces, few survive. Yong's pathogen is shallow, stagnating in meridians, attacking outward. Thus, initial fever occurs at the surface; lesion swells high like a pot/base with severe pain. Even if sinking, healthy Qi secures inside, resisting invasion, causing constipation/thirst/rebellious Qi to repel it. Thus, marrow never burns, Zang organs never damaged. Ju's pathogen is deep, stagnating internally, connecting to Zang, not attacking outward. Thus, body may lack fever, lesion may lack swelling/pain. Severe cases: hoarseness, Qi collapse, black/small eyes, black swollen toes. Blackness predominates = death. Treatment: For initial Yong, follow Jiegu's method: release exterior, purge interior, moxa, apply herbs. Unformed pus resolves; formed pus ruptures quickly. For initial Ju, follow Juanzi's method: tonify Zang/Fu to prevent sinking pathogen spread, moxa externally to draw pathogen out, giving it an exit point to avoid chaos. This turns death to life, disaster to luck. Modern surgeons fail to distinguish Yong/Ju, uniformly clearing heat/removing toxin, wasting Qi with external Wuxiang, depleting Blood with internal Dahuang, unaware of their error. Regrettable.
For initial Yong/Ju swelling/nodules not yet formed, usable for resolution: Sandu Yinzi.
Huangqi (2 liang), Gancao (roasted), Tianluo (raw), Shanyao (fried), Guiyao Daiye (0.5 liang: best from bamboo fences/shady wet stone banks growing on Luanstems; useless if growing on trees; vines are soft/thin, opposite leaves, triangular shape).
Coarse powder. Each dose 3 qian, decoct in 1 *zhan* water to 7/10, add 3 cups wine, boil briefly, strain, take warm.
[Jingyao] Shenxiao Tuoli San treats Yong, Ju, Back Sores, Intestinal Abscess, Breast Abscess, Unknown Swelling-Toxin, red/swollen pain, aversion to cold/fever. Treats all ages/weak constitutions.
Huangqi (remove roots), Rendong Tengye (each 5 liang), Danggui (1.8 liang), Fencǎo (roasted, 0.8 liang).
Fine powder. Each dose 2 qian, decoct in 1.5 cups wine to 1 cup. Lesions above: take after meal; below: take before meal. Repeat shortly. Leave dregs for external application.
[Baoming Ji] For sores turning black/purple: Huidu Jinyinhua Tang.
Jinyinhua (with stems, 2 liang), Huangqi (4 liang), Gancao (1 liang).
Decoct in 1 *sheng* wine via double-boiling for 3 *shichen* (6 hours), strain, take warm.
[Bencao] Huangqi San
Mian Huangqi (1 liang), Gancao (0.5 liang), Zaojiaoci (select red/purple, chop, roast yellow, 1 liang).
Fine powder. Each dose 2 large qian, decoct in 1 cup wine with a piece of Ruxiang to 7/10, strain, take.
[Hai Zang] Huangqi Tang combined with Siwu Tang, also named Tuoli Tang, tonifying Qi and Blood simultaneously.
Huangqi Siwu Tang
Renshen, Huangqi, Baizhu, Fuling, Shaoyao, Gancao, Shengjiang, Danggui, Dihuang, Chuanxiong. Add extra Jinyinhua when decocting.
[Bencao] Neigu Huangqi Tang
Mian Huangqi, Renshen (each 0.5 liang).
Fine powder, add 1 qian true raw Longnao (Borneol), grind fine, bind with raw Lotus Juice into mung-bean-sized pills. Each dose 30 pills, taken with warm water, increase to 40 pills, three times daily.
[Danxi] Aunt Wu-Ba, age 60, sore on back, pulse洪大数 (surging, large, rapid), aversion to cold/fever in afternoon, poor appetite.
Lianqiao, Huangqi (raw, 2 qian), Renshen (2 qian), Chenpi, Fuling (0.5 fen), Sharen (3 qian), Gancao (roasted), Baizhu (1 qian).
Divide into 10 doses, decoct and take.
All above formulas use Huangqi as Sovereign, Gancao/Danggui/Renshen as Assistants, tonifying interior/deficiency while supporting interior.
[Jingyao] Ejiao Yinzi
Ming Ejiao (fried like pearls), Fencǎo (each 1 liang), Juhong (0.5 liang).
Chop, divide into three doses. Re-decoct remaining herbs in 1 *zhan* water to 7/10, strain, take warm.
Another Prescription: Niujiao Yin intercepts Yong/Ju/Malignant Sores at dangerous sites, preventing toxin from attacking inward.
Niujiao (transparent, 4 liang). Dissolve in 1 bowl wine via double-boiling, stir, pour out, re-soak in wine, drink as desired. Those who can drink, stop at intoxication. This method saves many lives.
Another Prescription: Huangfan Wan. Over 1 liang dosage always effective, stops pain best, does not damage Zang/Fu, saves countless lives.
Baifan (1 liang), Huangla (0.5 liang).
Bind into pills the size of Toona seeds. Each dose 10 pills, gradually increase to 50, taken with warm wine. If unruptured, it resolves; if ruptured, it heals. 100 pills daily is effective. Prevents internal toxin attack, protects membranes throughout. Must take 0.5 jin; best taken after ulcer healing. For snake bites, melt Baifan, drop hot onto wound, pain stops immediately. Another method: sublimated Baifan ground fine, mixed with egg white to paste consistency, taken with good unfermented wine. Unformed pus resolves; formed pus exits via urine/stool. Miraculous efficacy, repeatedly verified, surpasses Huangfan Wan.
Guolao Gao treats all Yong/Ju, reduces swelling, expels toxin, prevents internal attack. Effects incalculable.
Large Gancao (2 jin), beaten, soaked in river water overnight, kneaded until thick juice forms, remove fibers/residue, filter through silk, decoct slowly in silver/earthenware to paste, store in vessel. Each dose 1-2 spoons, taken with unfermented wine or plain water. Resolves effects of dry/herbal pill medications. (Ben Shi Fang divides 1 jin Gancao into 3 doses with warm wine; current 1-2 spoons may be too weak.)
Yuanzhi Jiu treats all Yong/Ju/Back Sores, boil toxins/malignant signs, stagnant dead blood. Yin toxin inside causes no pain; application makes it painful. Accumulated grief/anger attacking inward causes unbearable pain; application stops pain. Internal heat forcing touch away; application brings coolness. Qi deficiency/Cold Blood, ulcerated but non-healing; Seven Emotions depression; treatment ensures recovery.
Yuanzhi (any quantity, soak in rice water, beat to remove heart), grind to powder. Mix 3 qian powder with 1 cup wine, let settle, drink clear liquid, apply dregs to lesion.
Rendong Jiu: Take at initial eruption. Effective among poor/rural farmers/elders, 100% success.
Fresh Rendong Teng (1 handful, leaves ground in mortar with little wine, apply around perimeter, leave center open). Take 5 liang, crush with wooden pestle (avoid iron). Gancao (1 liang, raw, chop).
Decoct these two in 2 bowls water in clay pot to 1 bowl, add 1 large bowl good wine, boil 10+ times, strain, divide into 3 doses, consume fully day and night. Severe cases: 2 doses/day-night. (Rendong Teng nourishes Blood; unsuitable for Qi deficiency/Cold excess, hence success among rural folk.)
[Danxi] Ejiao Yin, Niujiao Yin: Cow hide belongs to Metal/Earth, tonifies Lung Qi, strengthens Large Intestine, fortifies Stomach, stops diarrhea. Huangfan Wan: Wax is sweet/bland, enters Large Intestine, tonifies difficult digestion. Guolao Gao: Gancao transforms toxin, moves meridians. Yuanzhi Jiu, Rendong Jiu: both have tonifying nature, return to Heart/Blood, very appropriate. Skilled users combine them for dispersing nodules in swelling sores or tonifying deficiency in ulcerative sores, achieving swift results.
Above Danxi methods for tonifying interior/deficiency all use Renshen, Baizhu, Danggui, Huangqi, or even Dushen Gao. Methods seen in subsequent Meridian chapters and scattered in Ulcer section Deficiency/Excess/Cold/Heat articles. Truly a swift method turning death to life.
Yong/Ju should be discussed by Meridians: Six Yin, Six Yang, distributed throughout body. Some have abundant Qi/little Blood, some abundant Blood/little Qi, some abundant Qi/Blood. Cannot...
