[Bencao] Treats metal wounds (Jinchuang). To stop bleeding, relieve pain, ward off wind pathogens, reconnect bones and tendons, and generate flesh, use Dihuang San (Rehmannia Powder).
Dihuang (Shengdihuang Huangjing, Rehmanniae Radix with Rhizoma Dioscoreae - *Note: Text says Di Huang Miao, likely referring to fresh plant parts or specific variety, but standard is Rehmannia. Given context of 'Miao' (seedling/leaf), it might refer to fresh leaves/stems, but usually Dihuang refers to root. I will stick to literal translation of ingredients as per text*)... actually, looking at "Di Huang (Miao)", it likely means the seedling/leaf part of Rehmannia or a specific local herb named similarly. However, in TCM formulas, Di Huang usually implies Root. Let's translate literally: Di Huang (seedling), Disong, Qinghao, Cang'er (seedling), Sheng Ai Zhi (Fresh Mugwort Juice, 3 he), Chishao Yao (Red Peony Root, each 5 liang, decocted in water to extract juice).
Prepare these on the noon hour of the 5th day of the 5th lunar month and the 7th day of the 7th lunar month. Mix the above medicinal juices with Duanshi (Calcined Iron Ore) and dry in the shade. Add 3 liang of Hundan (Lead Monoxide), then pound into a fine powder. For any metal wound with fracture and bleeding, apply the powder to wrap and seal the wound; do not move it. It will heal in ten days without swelling or suppuration.
[Secular Experience] Treats metal wounds. Pound Fenghua Duanshi (Weathered Calcined Iron Ore) together with tender chive leaves, mix with Goose Blood to form a cake, dry in the shade using the wind, grind into powder, and apply to the wound. (If Goose Blood is unavailable, Duck Blood may be used.)
To treat continuous bleeding from metal wounds, use Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Duanshi, and Yujin (Curcuma Aromatica Rhizome) ground into powder, sprinkle onto the wound site to immediately stop bleeding.
[Cui Shi] Treats injuries from metal spears, knives, and axes with broken skin and bleeding. Use 1 sheng of Duanshi and half a jin of Pomegranate Flower, pound into powder. Apply a small amount to press on the wound for a short while; once bleeding stops, the injury heals.
[Li Gao] Moyao San (Powdered Medicines Decoction/Powder), an arrowhead/knife wound powder, stops bleeding and relieves pain.
Dingfen (Minium/Lead Oxide), Fenghua Hui (Weathered Ash), each 1 liang; Kufan (Alumen Exsiccatum), 3 qian (separately ground); Ruxiang (Boswellia Resin), 5 fen (separately ground); Moyao (Myrrh), 1 zi (separately ground).
Grind each ingredient into a fine powder separately, mix evenly, grind again, and sprinkle onto the wound.
[Zhu Danxi] Knife and axe wounds. Wrap with Duanshi; pain stops and bleeding ceases.
[Jingshengyi] Shengjin Fang (Superior Gold Formula) treats knife and axe wounds, stops bleeding and generates flesh, Can'e San (Silkworm Moth Powder).
Grind Wan Can'e (Late-season Silkworm Moth) into powder, spread evenly on silk cloth to wrap the wound; the wound closes and bleeding stops immediately. It also treats all types of metal wounds.
Another method: Pound raw late-season silkworm moths and Duanshi together into a cake, dry in the shade, grind into powder, and apply.
[Bencao] Treats metal wounds and relieves pain, Liuji Nu San (Liuji Nu Powder).
Single herb Liuji Nu (Artemisia Annua Herb/Lithospermum? Context suggests a specific herb known as Liuji Nu, often Lithospermum erythrorhizon or similar, but historically Liuji Nu refers to *Artemisia annua* or *Lithospermum*. In Song dynasty context, often *Lithospermum* or *Artemisia*. The story links to Emperor Wu of Song. Standard TCM Liuji Nu is *Artemisiae Annuae Herba* or *Lithospermi Radix*. Given "cutting reeds", likely *Artemisia*. I will use the pinyin/name). Grind into powder and sprinkle inside the metal wound. Once, Emperor Gaozu of Song, Liu Yu, when humble, was cutting reeds and saw a large snake several zhang long; he shot and injured it. The next day he returned and heard pounding sounds. He investigated and saw several boys in green clothes pounding medicine in a mortar. When asked why, they replied: "Our King was shot by Liu Jinu and we are preparing medicine to apply." The Emperor asked: "Why doesn't the deity kill him?" They answered: "Jinu is a future king; one who cannot die cannot be killed." The Emperor scolded them, they scattered, and he took the medicine. Whenever applied to metal wounds, it is effective. Jinu is the childhood name of the Emperor. This medicine not only treats metal wounds but is also excellent for burns and scalds. *Jingyan Fang* states: Grind Liuji Nu into powder. First, use glutinous rice paste and sweep the wound with a chicken feather, then apply the powder. It causes no pain and leaves no scar. Generally, for burns and scalds, wash immediately with salt water to protect the flesh from necrosis.
[Secular Experience] Treats metal wounds and contusions/injuries. Grind [missing character, likely a herb] finely, add a little salt, apply as a compress to heal. For continuous bleeding from metal wounds, cover with Xiaoji Ye (Cirsium Japonicum Leaf).
Stop bleeding from metal wounds. Pound Fupen Hua Miao (Rubus Chingii Flower and Seedling) and apply to the wound; bleeding stops immediately. (*Meishi Fang*)
[Bencao] Treats continuous bleeding and pain from metal wounds. Apply Xuejie (Dragon's Blood) powder; bleeding stops immediately.
[Jingshengyi] Formula for treating malignant sores, metal wounds, and knife/axe injuries with bleeding. Use high-quality Jiangzhen Xiang (Dalbergia Odorifera Lignum) ground into powder and applied; even if immersed in water, no scars remain. Extremely effective. (Formula seen in Hua Tuo's *Zhongzang Jing*).
Treats continuous bleeding from knife/arrow wounds and bone fractures.
Binglang (Areca Seed, 1 piece), Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), Huyedi Huang (likely a variant of Dihuang or specific regional name, possibly *Polygonatum* or *Rehmannia*, text says Hu Dihuang. I will transliterate as Huyedi Huang), each 3 qian.
Grind into powder. Apply to the wound; bleeding stops immediately, and it can also set bones.
[Zhang Zhongjing] For metal wounds, Wangbuliuxing San (Vaccaria Seed Powder) is the primary treatment.
Wangbuliuxing (Vaccariae Semen, 10 fen, collected on Aug 8), Shuoxie (likely *Epimedium* or similar, text says Shuoxi Xiye, probably *Epimedii Folium* or *Drynariae Rhizoma* variant, literally "Shuoxi thin leaf"), 10 fen (collected Jul 7); Sanggen (Mulberry Root Bark, white bark from roots growing southeast, collected Mar 3), Gancao (Licorice Root), each 10 fen; Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), 2 fen; Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper), 3 fen (remove eyes and closed ones, sweat/dry them); Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Shaoyao (Peony Root), N Houpo (Magnolia Bark), each 2 fen.
Take the nine ingredients. The first three (including Sanggenpi) are burned to charcoal retaining their nature, not over-burned. Grind, pound, and sieve each separately, then mix to make a powder. Take 1 cunbi (square inch measure) orally. For small wounds, dust with powder; for large wounds, take orally. It can also be taken postpartum. If there is Wind-Cold, do not use the southeast mulberry root. The first three ingredients must be dried in the shade for 100 days before use.
[Guangji Fang] Metal wounds with continuous bleeding and pain. Bai Shaoyao (White Peony Root) 1 liang, stir-fry until yellow, pound into fine powder. Take 2 qian with rice drink after wine. Take immediately after injury; gradual improvement after three doses.
[Guiyi Fang] Treats metal wounds with bleeding and eviscerated flesh. Burn 2 bats until smoke is gone, mix with water, take 1 cunbi. Consume within one day; stool will pass like bloody water, eliminating stasis. For metal wounds with protruding intestines attempting to re-enter: Cishi (Magnetite) and Huashi (Talcum), each 3 liang, grind into fine powder, take 1 cunbi with white rice drink. Repeat daily.
Zhang Zhongjing asked: The Cun Kou pulse is faint and choppy. Medically, this indicates blood loss or excessive sweating. If there is no sweating, what is the cause? Answered: If there is a sore on the body injured by knives or axes, it is due to blood loss.
[Mai Jing] If too much blood flows from a metal wound, a Xu Xi (deficient and fine) pulse indicates survival; a Shuo Shi (rapid and excess) pulse indicates death. If a metal wound is in a Yin area, continuous bleeding with Yin pulses unable to reach Yang indicates death; recovery of Yang pulses indicates survival. With bleeding from metal wounds, a Chen Xiao (deep and small) pulse indicates survival; a Fu Da (floating and large) pulse indicates death. If hacking wounds bleed one or two shi, and the pulse comes large, death occurs in twenty days. If both hacking and stabbing injuries exist, and bleeding does not stop spontaneously, the pulse becomes stagnant. If the pulse comes large, death occurs in seven days; a Hua Xi (slippery and fine) pulse indicates survival.
