To treat Gao Lin (Gouty Urine Syndrome).
Raw Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao, 50g) Raw Euryales Semen (Qianshi, 30g) Raw Os Draconis (Longgu, 30g, crushed into fine powder) Raw Ostreae Concha (Muli, 30g, crushed into fine powder) Raw Rehmanniae Radix (Dishengdi, 30g, sliced)
Luzhou Codonopsis Radix (Ludangshen, 15g) Raw Paeoniae Radix Alba (Hangshaoyao, 15g)
The symptoms of Gao Lin include turbid urine, which is additionally sticky, accompanied by painful and difficult urination with a dribbling sensation. This syndrome arises from Kidney deficiency, which secretly generates internal heat. When the Kidney is deficient, its storing function becomes insecure, making essence and qi prone to slipping and loss. Secretly generated internal heat steams the Bladder, altering the urine from clear to turbid. Over time, the Qi transformation of the Sanjiao stagnates, disrupting its ascending and descending mechanisms, leading to traction pain during urination and resulting in turbid, sticky urine. Therefore, Shanyao and Qianshi are used to tonify deficiency and possess astringent properties. Longgu and Muli are used to secure against slipping and possess the function of resolving stagnation. Dishengdi and Shaoyao are used to clear heat and promote urination. Ludangshen is used to generally elevate Qi transformation and mediate it. If the condition presents as turbid but not sticky, indicating discharge solely through the urinary tract, when using this formula, the dosage of Longgu and Muli should be reduced by half.
To treat Qi Lin (Qi Distension Urinary Difficulty Syndrome).
Raw Astragali Radix (Huangqi, 25g) Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu, 20g) Raw Paeoniae Radix Alba (Hangshaoyao, 15g) Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 10g) Raw Resina Incensi (Ruxiang, 5g) Raw Resina Myrrhae (Moyao, 5g)
The symptoms of Qi Lin include frequent dragging pain in the lower abdomen, frequent urination, and painful, difficult urination with a dribbling sensation. Because the patient's Lower Jiao is originally deficient and harbors latent internal heat, while the Qi transformation of the Upper Jiao sinks downward, stagnating and generating heat, the deficient heat and damp-heat mutually knot in the Fu organ of Taiyang (Bladder), obstructing the mechanism of ascending, descending, flowing, and circulating, thus forming the syndrome of Qi Lin. Therefore, herbs that raise and tonify Qi transformation are used as the main agents, assisted by herbs that nourish Yin, promote urination, and circulate Qi transformation.
To treat Lao Lin (Fatigue Urinary Difficulty Syndrome).
Raw Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao, 50g) Raw Euryales Semen (Qianshi, 15g) Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu, 15g) True Asini Corii Colla (Ejiao, 15g, not stir-fried) Raw Paeoniae Radix Alba (Hangshaoyao, 15g)
The syndrome of Lao Lin arises from fatigue. Whether due to excessive physical labor, excessive mental labor, or excessive sexual activity, all can secretly generate internal heat and dissipate true Yin. When Yin is deficient and heat is vigorous, steaming the Bladder, it eventually forms Lin syndrome over time. The urine cannot be held for even a short moment; after urination, there is still an urge to urinate again, often accompanied by pain. Therefore, herbs that tonify and nourish true Yin are used as the main agents, assisted by a small amount of Qi-tonifying herbs, and further guided by a small amount of diuretic herbs. However, if this syndrome results from physical labor, it is easy to treat; if from mental labor, it is difficult to treat; if from sexual excess, it is especially difficult to treat. In cases where endless desires cause the Ministerial Fire to move secretly without release, accumulating over time to form Lin syndrome, it is appropriate to use Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai) and Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu) to cool the Kidney, and Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie) and Talcum (Huashi) to drain the Kidney, whereby the Lin syndrome will heal itself.
A question was asked: Among the four formulas above for treating Lin syndromes, three use Shanyao as the Sovereign herb. Is the nature of Shanyao most suitable for Lin syndromes? The answer is: For those with Yin deficiency causing difficult urination, taking Shanyao can promote urination. For those with Qi deficiency causing failure to control urination, taking Shanyao can secure urination. Essentially, Shanyao is a fine herb for nourishing Yin and a fine herb for securing the Kidney. To treat the painful, difficult, and frequent urination characteristic of Lin syndromes, it is indeed a unique and excellent product. By adding other herbs to assist according to the specific condition, the administration of this formula yields immediate efficacy.
