Treatment for Sand Lin (Sand-type strangury), also known as Stone Lin (Stone-type strangury).
Raw Chicken Gizzard Membrane, yellow variety (1 liang; both chickens and ducks have gizzard linings, but the chicken's is yellow and suitable for use; ensure all sand/grit is removed) Raw Astragalus Root (8 qian) Anemarrhena Rhizome (8 qian) Raw Hang Peony Root (6 qian) Realgar (6 qian) Mirabilite (5 qian) Niter (5 qian)
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills, sized like tung tree seeds. Take 3 qian with warm water before meals, twice daily.
The syndrome of Stone Lin arises from Qi stagnation and blood stasis in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), or due to excessive mental and physical labor, or excessive sexual activity, leading to latent internal heat in the Bladder. The internal heat and stasis boil and simmer over time, eventually forming stones that obstruct the urinary tract, causing extreme pain. Smaller stones can be dissolved by medication; however, stones larger than peach or apricot kernels are difficult to dissolve. In such cases, surgical removal by Western medicine is necessary. This is a critical condition involving life and death; although surgical extraction carries risks, it allows one to seek stability amidst danger.
Chicken Gizzard Membrane is the stomach/intestine lining of the chicken, which naturally possesses the ability to digest stones. Realgar can be used as a soldering agent for gold, silver, and copper; its nature naturally softens metals and treats fishbones stuck in the throat, thus it is also effective at dissolving hard substances. Mirabilite: *Shennong Bencao Jing* states it can dissolve seventy-two types of stones. Niter: Not recorded in *Shennong Bencao Jing*, but recorded in *Mingyi Bielu*, stating it can also dissolve seventy-two types of stones. It is presumed that these two substances have similar properties and flavors, and were originally not distinguished in ancient texts, being included under the entry for Mirabilite, until Tao Hongjing separated them, though their stone-dissolving capabilities remain the same. However, since all these drugs are agents of dissolution and breakdown, they may potentially damage Yuan Qi (Original Qi). Therefore, Astragalus Root is added to tonify and support the Qi level. When Qi is robust, it further aids in transporting and transforming the medicinal power. Fearing that Astragalus Root is too hot in nature and unsuitable for Lin syndromes, Anemarrhena Rhizome and Peony Root are added to clear heat and nourish Yin. Furthermore, Peony Root has the property of guiding the power of other herbs to the Bladder.
Note: There is an emergency method for this condition. When stones block the flow completely, lying supine while urinating may restore flow. If it remains blocked, one may lie on the side, stand up, or press hands against the ground, allowing the stone to dislodge from the obstruction site, thereby restoring flow.
