Observing this syndrome, there is a sudden rising of Qi from above the umbilicus to the chest cavity, gathering and beating incessantly below the left breast. This Qi that suddenly rises from above the umbilicus is the Qi emanating from the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) among the Eight Extraordinary Vessels. The origin of the Chong Mai is superiorly affiliated with the Stomach, and the great collateral of the Stomach, Xuli (ST17), penetrates the diaphragm, connects with the Lung, and emerges below the left breast as an arterial pulse. However, in healthy individuals, its movement is subtle, so one does not perceive it. Now, due to the rebellious rising of Chong Qi invading the Stomach, and following the great collateral of Xuli to penetrate the diaphragm and connect with the Lung, it re-emerges below the left breast alongside the arterial pulse, causing the artery to beat vigorously. Consequently, the patient perceives the beating and feels uneasy. One should employ herbs that descend, astringe, anchor, and tonify the Chong Mai to treat the root cause; then, the beating of the artery below the left breast will naturally cease to be perceived. Therefore, two prescriptions are formulated below:
Raw Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao) (8 qian), Raw Oyster Shell (Muli) (8 qian), Raw Hematitum Powder (Zheishi) (4 qian), Raw Euryales Semen (Qianshi) (4 qian),
Processed Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia) (sufficient 4 qian, if containing alum, wash clean with warm water and dry), Biota Seed (Baiziren) (4 qian, stir-fried, crushed without removing oil), Ophiopogon Radix (Maidong) (3 qian).
Decoct the above seven herbs in concentrated rust water obtained by grinding iron.
Another prescription: Use half a jin of pure black lead. Melt it repeatedly using an iron spoon. Collect the residual lead ash from these repeated meltings, grind it finely, and sieve it. Weigh the remaining lead after melting; if four liang remain, melt it again using an iron spoon. After melting, sprinkle one and a half liang of fine sulfur powder into the spoon, and quickly stir-fry and mix with an iron spatula. The lead, subjected to roasting and refining by sulfur, turns red and forms granules due to stirring. Allow to cool, crush finely, and sieve. Any pieces that form cakes indicate unrefined lead; ensure they are completely removed. Mix one liang of each of the two prepared substances with stir-fried wheat flour to make pills (avoid adding too much flour, just enough to form pills), sized like wu-tong seeds. Take six or seven pills, or up to ten or more per dose (adjust until the patient feels the medicinal action descending without a sensation of sinking). Send down with a thin porridge made from five or six qian of raw Dioscoreae Rhizoma powder. Take twice daily. Either of the above two prescriptions may be used alone or together.
