1. During the approach of labor in pregnancy, one must remain calm and composed. Although there is pain in the abdomen, do not panic. Extend the body and lie supine to allow the fetus to turn; wait quietly for the time of birth, without haste.
[Note] When the months of pregnancy are full and labor is approaching, if one feels fetal movement and abdominal pain, it is necessary to remain calm and not be self-flustered. Lie supine with the body extended, and walk slowly from time to time to enable the fetus to assume the correct position. Wait quietly; when the time for delivery arrives, natural and smooth birth will occur, without the need for anxiety.
2. The temperature of the delivery room should be appropriate; extreme cold or heat is always unsuitable. Summer requires coolness, winter requires warmth; both the patient and the physician must know this.
[Note] Inside the delivery room, the temperature must be moderate throughout all four seasons. If it is too hot or too cold, it is inappropriate. In summer, it must be cool to prevent the parturient woman from suffering from heatstroke and fainting due to excessive heat. If such an event occurs, giving a small amount of cool water can help relieve it. In winter, it must be warm to prevent blood stasis and difficult labor due to cold. One should prepare plenty of charcoal braziers so that the parturient woman’s waist, back, and lower body can be warmed by the fire. This is something that families facing childbirth and physicians alike should know.
3. A midwife (Steady Woman) must be selected in advance for labor; she should be mature, experienced, and astute. Without cause, do not let her use manual techniques; instead, encourage her to keep a broad mind and wait patiently for the time of birth.
[Note] Families facing childbirth must employ a midwife who has been pre-selected as being mature, experienced, and sensible. Without specific reason, do not allow her to perform manual examinations beforehand, such as testing waters or checking amniotic fluid. Simply instruct her to remain calm and patient, waiting until the time is right for delivery.
4. Noisy chatter causes fright in the parturient woman; deficiency of heart Qi and timidity constitute "Fright Birth" (Jing Sheng). It is urgent to stop the noise and eliminate commotion; once the mother’s mind is at peace, the fetus naturally becomes tranquil.
[Note] There should not be too many people in the delivery room. Too many people lead to noisy conversation, which inevitably startles the parturient woman. Fright leads to deficiency of Heart Qi and timidity, often resulting in exhaustion at the time of delivery, a condition termed "Fright Birth." In such cases, others must be hurriedly dismissed, leaving only one or two attendants, to ensure silence and lack of commotion. Only then can the mother’s mind become peaceful; once peaceful, the fetus also becomes tranquil.
