[Mixing-Pupil Song]
In the early stage of the Mixing-Pupil syndrome, the Baijing (sclera) becomes turbid, and gradually red meridians grow to cover the pupil. Alternatively, a turbid white membrane spreads over the entire eyeball. For the white type, smoothness like moss is contraindicated; for the red type, the dispersion of red meridians outward is contraindicated. The symptoms manifest as itching followed by pain, accompanied by a dull, gritty sensation and tearing. Treatment should first employ fumigation and washing to unblock the toxic wind in the Liver channel, followed by administering a decoction containing Sheng Dihuang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix) and Shu Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), combined with Jili (Tribuli Fructus), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) to unblock the collaterals. Additional herbs such as Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Muzei (Equiseti Herba), Wu Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), and Gujingcao (Glehniae Fructus) are added.
Formula: Dihuang San (Rehmannia Powder)
Sheng Dihuang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix) 7 qian, Shu Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, baked dry) 7 qian, Baijili (Tribuli Fructus, stir-fried) 4 qian, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 7 qian, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted) 5 qian, Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) 5 qian, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, fried with wine) 5 qian, Muzei (Equiseti Herba) 5 qian, Wu Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, sliced into shavings) 5 qian, Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) 5 qian, Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) 5 qian, Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 7 qian, Gujingcao (Glehniae Fructus) 5 qian.
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder and mix evenly. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with the juice of boiled sheep liver, administered after meals.
The formula for Mozhang Lingguang Gao (Ointment for Rubbing Away Cataracts and Spiritual Light) is found at the end of this volume.
Annotation [1]: In the early stage of the Mixing-Pupil syndrome, the sclera is moist and reddish, with gradual growth of red meridians covering and spreading over the Heijing (cornea/pupil area), making the black and white parts appear uniformly white or red. For the white presentation, smoothness resembling moss is contraindicated; for the red presentation, the outward dispersion of red meridians is contraindicated. Initially, the condition presents with itching followed by pain, gradually leading to a foreign body sensation, grittiness, tearing, photophobia, dull pain, and blurred vision. This is caused by the accumulation of toxic wind and blood stasis in the Liver organ ascending upwards.
Annotation [2]: Treatment should initially utilize fumigation and washing to remove blood stasis, followed by the administration of Dihuang San, and the external application of Mozhang Lingguang Gao.
[Postpartum Eye Diseases]
Text: Postpartum eye diseases arise from blood deficiency. There are three etiologies, and their treatments can be understood. Excessive thinking, crying, and visual fatigue lead to internal cataracts (Neizhang); a preference for spicy and rich foods leads to external cataracts (Waizhang).
External causes include headache due to wind, wind-induced erosion, and dampness. These can be treated with Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) to nourish blood, supplemented with Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) and Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma). Add Xiakucao (Prunellae Spica), Shu Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), adjusting according to the patient's condition for effective results.
Formula: Siwu Bugan Tang (Four Substances Liver-Nourishing Decoction)
Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma, processed with wine) 1.5 qian, Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 1 qian, Xiakucao (Prunellae Spica) 2 qian, Shu Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, baked dry) 4 qian, Danggui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, washed with wine) 2 qian, Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, washed with wine) 1.5 qian, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted) 0.5 qian.
Grind the ingredients into coarse powder. Decoct with two cups of water until one cup remains. Strain and take warm after meals.
Annotation [1]: Postpartum eye diseases are conditions of blood deficiency caused by excessive blood loss. Although the etiologies differ into three categories, the treatment methods can be modified and adjusted accordingly.
Annotation [2]: Internal causes often stem from excessive mental worry, crying, or overuse of vision, leading to the formation of internal cataracts (Neizhang). This requires the Siwu Bugan Tang, with increased dosages of Shu Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix). External causes result from a preference for spicy and rich foods or from headaches due to wind, leading to wind-redness and damp erosion (Waizhang).
Annotation [3]: It is advisable to increase the dosages of Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Xiakucao (Prunellae Spica) in this formula and adjust based on the specific syndrome for treatment.
