The acupoints contraindicated for needling must first be clearly understood: Naohu (Brain Door), Xinhui (Fontanel Meeting), and Shenting (Spirit Palace); Luoque (Connecting Away), Yuzhen (Jade Pillow), Jiaosun (Corner Sun), Luxi (Skull Rest), Chengqi (Below the Eye), and Chengling (Following Spirit); Shendao (Spirit Path), Lingtai (Spirit Platform), and Danzhong (Chest Center) are taboo; Shuifen (Water Divider), Shenque (Spirit Gate), and Huiyin (Meeting of Yin); Henggu (Horizontal Bone), Qichong (Qi Rush), and Shouwuli (Hand Five Li); Jimen (Gate of the Basket), Chengjin (Supporting Sinew), and Qingling (Green Spirit); Ruzhong (Center of Breast), and Sanyangluo (Three Yang Network) on the upper arm. These twenty-three acupoints must not be needled. Pregnant women should not have Hegu (LI-4) needled, and Sanyinjiao (SP-6) is also generally discussed as contraindicated. Shimen (Stone Gate) requires caution against both needling and moxibustion; if treated in women, it may result in lifelong infertility. Additionally, Yunmen (Cloud Gate) and Jiutui (Eagle Tail), Quepen (Missing Basin), and Keren (Guest Master) should not be needled deeply. Deep needling of Jianjing (GB-21) can cause fainting; urgent tonification of Zusanli (ST-36) can restore stability. Needling the five zang organs or the gallbladder leads to death; bleeding from Chongyang (ST-42) implies a fatal outcome. Haiquan (Sea Spring), Quanliao (Cheekbone Hollow), Ruzhu (Nipple), Zhijian (Spinal Intercostal), Zhongsui (Middle Marrow), and Yulou (Hunchback Shape); Shuyu (Hand Fish), Xiangu (Sunken Valley), Gu Nei (Inside Thigh), Xibin (Kneecap), Jinhuai (Sinew Gathering), and Kidney Meridian; each three cun below the axilla and groin; all orbital joints are subject to these general evaluations.

Do not attack these points with moxa fire.

Manufacturing needles requires using iron from horse bits; gold needles are even more commendable. [Toad] venom coating and insertion into cured meat are methods; there are multiple recipes for boiling needles.
Note: [1] Using iron from horse bits for needle manufacturing: horses correspond to Wu (noon), which corresponds to Fire. Fire overcomes Metal, symbolizing the principle of overcoming/restraining.
[2] If real gold is used to make needles, it is better.
[3] The [processing] method: Heat iron wire until red-hot in fire, cut into two, three, or five cun lengths, without restriction on length. Then coat the needle with toad venom, briefly heat in fire, remove, and repeat coating and heating three times. While hot, insert the needle between the skin and flesh of cured meat. Boil the following herbs in three bowls of water, then place the needle inside the meat, boil until the water dries up, pour into water, wait for it to cool, and remove the needle. Insert the needle into yellow earth over a hundred times to remove fire toxicity. The needle must be smooth and round, not sharp-pointed, and finally wrap the handle with copper wire.
