Swelling and pain in the limbs and joints, along with cold knees; flaccidity or paralysis of the four limbs combined with head wind disease; pain in the muscles and bones on the inner and outer sides of the back and hips; unrest caused by diseases of the head, neck, and supraorbital ridge;
fever and numbness of the hands and feet, nocturnal sweating (night sweats); swelling of the heels after trauma and redness of the eyes; spontaneous sweating and a sensation of radiant heat in Shanghan (Cold Damage) syndrome—only needling Waiguan (TE5) is extremely effective.
[Note] [1] Swelling and pain in the bones of the four limbs, bi-syndrome coldness in both knees, motor impairment of the hands and feet, lateral or central headache (head wind), pain in the spine, back, waist, hips, muscles, bones,
head, neck, and supraorbital ridge; fever and numbness of the hands and feet, nocturnal sweating, as well as wandering wind following trauma;
swelling and pain of the heels, redness of both eyes, spontaneous sweating in the Yangming channel of Shanghan, and a sensation of steaming heat—all are suitable for acupuncture at Waiguan (TE5).
The illness will be cured immediately (Figure 17).
Spasm and tremor of the hands and feet, dizziness, aphasia due to stroke (Zhongfeng), and epilepsy; headache, swollen eyes, and continuous tearing; lingering pain in the back, waist, legs, and knees;
neck stiffness with unresolved Shanghan; swelling of the teeth □ and difficult throat conditions; numbness of the hands and feet, tetanus (broken wind), and nocturnal sweating—first treat Houxi (SI3).
[Note] [1] Spasm refers to difficulty in flexion and extension.
[2] Tremor refers to shaking of the hands and feet such that grasping is impossible.
[3] Dizziness refers to vertigo.
[4] Stroke involves sudden collapse and loss of consciousness, inability to speak; epilepsy involves loss of awareness and convulsions (chi zong);
headache and acute fire-eye with constant hot tears; Xing-bi (wandering bi-syndrome); pain in the joints of the legs, knees, back, and waist throughout the body;
neck stiffness, Shanghan, common cold, absence of sweat preventing resolution, swelling and pain of the upper and lower teeth, □, gums, pharynx, and throat;
numbness and insensitivity of the hands and feet, broken wind from exposure to wind, nocturnal sweating, and other syndromes—
needling Houxi (SI3) first opens the meridian pathways, ensuring recovery without exception (Figure 18).
Stiffness of the waist, back, and spine; ankle wind; aversion to wind, spontaneous sweating, or headache; numbness and spasm of the hands and feet, coldness in the arms; Lei-tou (Thunder-head) syndrome, red eyes, and supraorbital pain;
mastitis (blown milk), deafness, epistaxis; epilepsy □ and painful vexation in the joints; generalized edema and profuse sweating—needling Shenmai (BL62) first yields miraculous results.
[Note] [1] Stiffness of the waist, back, and spine refers to the inability to bend forward or backward.
[2] Redness and swelling of the medial malleolus is named Rao-huai Feng (Encircling Ankle Wind).
[3] Redness and swelling of the lateral malleolus is named Chuan-huai Feng (Piercing Ankle Wind).
[4] Aversion to wind, spontaneous sweating, Lei-tou headache, acute fire-eye, supraorbital pain, numbness and spasm of the hands and feet, coldness of the arms,
as well as mastitis in women, characterized by redness and swelling of the breast (called Nei-chui for nulliparous women, Wai-chui for parous women);
deafness, epistaxis, epilepsy with convulsions, vexatious pain in the joints, generalized edema, and profuse sweating on the head—
these are all diseases caused by the flow and attack of wind-heat, phlegm, and fluid retention; all are suitable for needling Shenmai (BL62) first, yielding immediate efficacy (Figure 19).
