Treats Fengfei (post-stroke sequelae characterized by limb paralysis without pain), presenting with hemiplegia, weakness in the hands and feet, and inability to walk or move. Long-term administration will naturally reveal its efficacy.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried) 6 qian, Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, wine-fried) 3 qian, Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, tender branch with bark) 3 qian, Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, with outer skin) 3 qian, Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, pitted) 4 pieces. Decoct in water and take orally.
[Note] The *Classic of Internal Medicine* states: When empty pathogens (Xu Xie) reside on one side of the body, if they penetrate deeply, they lodge within Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi). When Ying and Wei decline, True Qi departs, leaving only the pathogen, resulting in Piangu (hemiplegia); if the pathogen is superficial, there is unilateral meridian pain. This refers to the invasion of empty pathogens and thievish winds. If Ying and Wei are deficient, the pathogen penetrates deeply, lingering for a long time to cause Piangu and hemiplegia; if Ying and Wei are solid, the pathogen penetrates shallowly, immediately causing unilateral meridian pain, which is Wind-Bi disease. For diseases of Eight Winds and Five Bi syndromes, if Ying and Wei are in an excess state, use Xuming Tang or Huangu Dan to disperse the pathogens in Ying and Wei. However, for Fengfei and Piangu, which involve deficiency of Ying and Wei, this decoction should be used to tonify the deficiency of Ying and Wei. Therefore, Huangqi is used as the Sovereign herb to tonify Wei Qi, Guizhi and Baishao as Ministers to tonify Ying Blood, while Shengjiang and Dazao act as Assistants, providing both tonification and unblocking action to harmonize Ying and Wei. This formula is a variation of Xiaojianzhong Tang, adding Huangqi and removing Gancao and Yitang, indicating its intent to tonify the exterior (muscle layer) rather than the Middle Jiao. If the left side is hemiplegic, add Danggui to tonify blood; if the right side is hemiplegic, double the dosage of Huangqi to tonify Qi. For softness/weakness in the hands, double Guizhi; for softness/weakness in the feet, add Niuxi; for softness/weakness in the tendons, add Mugua; for softness/weakness in the bones, add Hugu; for deficiency of Yuan Qi, add Renshen; for deficiency of Yang Qi, add Fuzi. Practitioners should adjust according to clinical presentation. Long-term administration will yield consistent results. If external wind pathogens are excessive, one should instead refer to Qianghuo Yufeng Tang, employing a strategy of tonification combined with dispersion.
