Treating stroke (Zhong Feng) resulting in aphasia, with a slow and weak pulse.
Fangfeng Radix Saposhnikoviae and Huangqi Radix Astragali in equal proportions, decocted in water and taken orally.
[Collected Annotations] Ke Qin stated: Wind is the leader of all diseases. When pathogenic wind arrives, it is as urgent as wind and rain. A skilled practitioner treats at the level of the skin and hair; therefore, Fangfeng is used to expel exterior pathogens. Where pathogens gather, Qi must be deficient; thus, Huangqi is used to inspire and boost righteous Qi. The combination of Huangqi and Fangfeng yields greater efficacy, embodying the principle of mutual reinforcement between attacking and tonifying. In the Tang Dynasty, Empress Dowager Liu suffered from stroke-induced aphasia. Xu Yinzong prepared dozens of jin of Fangfeng Huangqi Decoction, placed it under the bed for steaming, and had her reside amidst the medicinal vapor. By the next day, she could speak. This illustrates how external qi communicates with internal qi, promoting qi circulation and leading to recovery. The Classics state: "The five qi enter through the nose and are stored in the Heart and Lung, enabling clear vision and hearing, and distinct voice." The creator of this formula likely understood this principle. If the power of fumigation can still cure disease, how much more so oral administration! Contemporary practitioners treating wind disorders rely solely on dispersing methods and prohibit the use of Renshen and Huangqi. They fail to realize that blindness and inability to see, or trismus and inability to speak, are caused by insufficient Yuan Qi (Original Qi). Who understands that tonifying Qi can defend against wind, and that when Righteous Qi prevails, Pathogenic Qi retreats? Profound understanding depends on the individual. Truly said!
Treating cases where wind pathogens linger without dissipating. It is also suitable for patients with incessant spontaneous sweating.
Fangfeng Radix Saposhnikoviae, Huangqi Radix Astragali, and Baizhu Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae in equal proportions. Grind into fine powder, and take mixed with wine.
[Collected Annotations] Ke Qin stated: Where pathogens gather, Qi must be deficient. Therefore, when treating wind disorders, the concern is not the lack of methods to drive them out, but the lack of methods to defend against them; one does not fear the departure of wind, but fears its return. Why? Because excessive dispersion leads to the failure of Xuanfu (pores) to close. Ignorant practitioners do not understand the method of supporting the interior and consolidating the exterior. They indiscriminately try wind-dispelling herbs, yet those that leave depart, and those that come arrive. Pathogenic qi lingers indefinitely without resolution. Fangfeng circulates throughout the body and is called the immortal herb for treating wind. It clears the seven orifices of the head and face superiorly, removes bone joint pain and bi-syndrome internally, and resolves limb spasms externally. It is a moistening agent among wind-dispelling herbs. Treating wind exclusively with this herb bears heavy responsibility and specialized efficacy. However, Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) warms the muscles, fills the skin, thickens the cou li (interstices), and controls opening and closing. Only Huangqi can tonify the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) and solidify Wei Qi, serving as the key defense of the Xuanfu against wind. Moreover, it can induce sweating when absent and stop sweating when present, sharing efficacy with Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction). Thus, it can also treat wind-heat in the head and eyes, severe leprosy-like conditions (Da Feng Lai Ji), intestinal wind bleeding, and uterine wind in women. It is a wind-draining herb within tonifying formulas. Hence, Fangfeng gains greater efficacy when combined with Huangqi. Baizhu strengthens the Spleen and Stomach and warms the muscles; cultivating Earth (Spleen/Stomach) pacifies Wind. With Fangfeng's ability to disperse wind and Huangqi's ability to consolidate the exterior, there is external protection; with Baizhu's ability to secure the interior, there is internal support. Wind pathogens are expelled and do not return. This formula, intended to scatter wind pathogens, should be relied upon like a screen and valued like jade. For those with incessant spontaneous sweating, it is due to slight pathogens remaining in the exterior, causing insecurity of the skin, hair, and muscles.
