The *Daqing Jing · Taiyi Shening Dan Fang* states: For those taking cinnabar pills (Dan), one may consume congee made from japonica rice, broomcorn millet, foxtail millet, or scallion and fermented soybean paste. One may also eat alfalfa, Vitex fruit, white parts of scallions, Chinese chives, fresh ginger, pickled melons, sauce with fermented soybeans, mutton, venison, roe deer meat, pheasant, rabbit, and young calves. These meats may be boiled or dried into jerky. Mutton can be consumed in these forms; however, although it is permissible to eat it as jerky, it should not be prepared as a thick soup.
The *Zhaohun Dan Fang* states: For patients who have taken cinnabar pills for three to five years or longer, one must avoid eating stale, foul-smelling, rotten, or spoiled food, as well as raw meat and minced garlic. It further states: Avoid rich, fatty, fresh foods, blood products, the "Five Pungent Spices" (Wuxin, referring to garlic, allium tuberosum, wild garlic, asafetida, and sweet cicely), and raw vegetables. Aside from these restrictions, there are no other dietary prohibitions.
The *Daqing Jing* states: When taking cinnabar pills, one must strictly avoid yellow beef, sheep blood soup, white wine, stored grain rice, wheat, carp, and any dusty, foul-smelling, or spoiled food. These items must not be consumed; all other foods may be chosen according to one's preference. It also states: During the intake of cinnabar pills, one should not consume hot food or hot soups. Food must be cool and not overly hot; if too hot, it will trigger the drug's activity, causing vomiting and nausea.
For those taking cinnabar pills combined with Realgar (Xionghuang) and the Eight Minerals (Bashi, referring to cinnabar, mercury, azurite, realgar, crocoite, magnetite, saltpeter, and rock salt), one must abstain from consuming blood products. Otherwise, not only will the illness remain untreated, but it may eventually lead to hemiplegia (half-body paralysis). Exercise great caution.
The *Zhaohun Dan Fang* states: Regarding any household involving mourning, filial piety rites, death, or places where childbirth has occurred and uncleanness exists, one must exercise caution and avoidance from beginning to end.
The *Daqing Jing* states: When taking medicine, during the phase when the drug's effect activates, one may feel slight swelling throughout the body, tears flowing from the eyes, clear fluid running from the nose, frequent groaning or panting, or sneezing. These are signs that the drug's power is interacting with the body; do not be alarmed. One may suspend intake for three to five days. During this recuperation period, bathing with a mixture of raw and cooked water is advisable. Eating cold wheat congee for one or two meals is also beneficial. After the body returns to normal, resume taking the medicine as before. Take the medicine three times a day. Pause intake every two days or every three to five days, adjusting according to one's own tolerance and the strength of the medication.
If, while taking cinnabar pills, one unexpectedly experiences excessive heat and oppression, approaching an attack, one should immediately loosen the hair and lower the head, slowly pouring two or three sheng (ancient unit of volume) of cold water over the crown of the head. The condition will subside shortly. If it does not stabilize, repeat the pouring process. Using three to five sheng of water at most will suffice. However, one must not drink cold water. If extremely distressed, one may drink mud water (tujiang). Alternatively, one may drink indigo juice, egg white juice, or consume two or three mouthfuls of vinegar-rice, pickled okra, Jinshi Ling (a type of cold dessert), Ningxue Gao (Congealed Snow Paste), or Mirabilite powder. Mix honey and water, each in the quantity of one egg, blend them thoroughly until harmonious, then add half a liang (ancient unit of weight) of Mirabilite powder, mix well, and ingest. Relief will be immediate. One may also consume cold pickled okra, pork, vinegar-rice, Coptis chinensis juice, Kudzu root juice, juices from large and small beans, rice washing water, or rice flour water.
