The *Ge Shi Fang* (Formula of Master Ge) treats patients with epidemic febrile diseases (Shixing Bing, seasonal infectious diseases) who are near death, using the "Po Guan Qian Jin Tang" (Resurrection Decoction):
Kushen (Radix Sophorae Flavescentis), one liang.
Cut into pieces, decoct in two sheng of wine until reduced to one and a half sheng. Take all at once; vomiting is expected to expel toxins. (This matches the *Qianjin Fang*.)
Su Jing’s annotation in the *Bencao* states: Burning dried human feces until the smoke disappears, soaking the ash in water, and drinking the juice is called "Po Guan Tang," which treats heat-toxin from Shanghan (Cold Damage). (Note: In the *Ge Shi Fang*, this is commonly referred to as "Huang Long Tang" [Yellow Dragon Decoction].)
The *Qi Po Fang* (Formula of Qi Po) for treating severe heat diseases:
Fresh Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis), slightly less than one sheng. Remove the heart, crush, stir-fry, add well-water, squeeze out one and a half sheng of juice. Wait until cool, divide into three doses. If the heat is extreme, vomiting after administration leads to recovery.
The *Ji Yan Fang* states: To clear heat-toxin, nothing surpasses sour substances.
The *Cui Yuxi Shijing* (Food Classic of Cui Yuxi) states: Pears are excellent medicines for clearing Shanghan and epidemic fevers.
The *Tong Xuan Jing* states: Although pears are like knives and axes to the five zang organs (due to their cold nature), they are sufficient as wonderful medicines for treating Shanghan, etc.
The *Bing Yuan Lun* (Treatise on Pathogenesis of Diseases) states: On the first day of Shanghan, the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel is affected. The Taiyang channel is the Bladder meridian, the head of the three yang channels, so it is affected first.
Its pulse...
The *Ge Shi Fang* states: There are several types of Shanghan that laypeople cannot distinguish. Now, taking a single herb to treat multiple conditions: if initially presenting with headache, muscle heat, and a surging pulse, use the following formula:
Congbai (Scallion White, a handful) Chishi (Prepared Soybean, one sheng).
Decoct in three sheng of water until reduced to one sheng. Take in one dose to induce sweating. (The *Ji Yan Fang* records using three sheng of infant feces.)
Another formula: Gegen (Pueraria Root), four liang; water, one dou. Decoct until reduced to three sheng, add Chishi (one sheng), decoct again until reduced to one and a half sheng. Take in one dose.
Yet another formula: Crush fresh Gegen root to extract juice, take one or two sheng.
The *Qianjin Fang* treats Shanghan, seasonal qi, warm epidemics, presenting with headache, high fever, and a full pulse, applicable within one or two days of onset:
Zhen Dan (Real Cinnabar), one liang. Decoct in two sheng of water until reduced to one sheng. Take in one dose, cover the patient to induce sweating.
The *Xin Lu Fang* treats Shanghan and warm epidemics on the third day, presenting with surging and floating pulses internally, headache, aversion to cold, high fever, and body pain:
Congbai (Scallion White, one sheng) Chishi (Prepared Soybean, one sheng) Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit, 21 pieces) Guixin (Cinnamon Bark, two liang; if unavailable, use fresh ginger, three liang).
Decoct in seven sheng of water until reduced to two sheng. Divide into three doses.
The *Qianjin Fang* treats epidemic qi Shanghan that has not resolved after three days:
Good Chishi (Prepared Soybean, one sheng) Congbai (Scallion White, one sheng) Infant Urine (three sheng).
Decoct until reduced to two sheng. Divide into two doses. Cover the patient to induce sweating; this is highly effective.
